Elon College will open your mind to new

ideas and ways of thinking. Students

and faculty are united by a shared love

of learning and an insatiable desire to

understand and improve their world.

Diverse areas of study allow students to

embark on interdisciplinary projects and

learn from faculty across a variety of fields.

So what is Elon College really about? It’s

simple. Engaged Learning. Global Interest.

High Academic Standards. Interdisciplinary

Integration. Academic Discovery. Innovative

Facilities. Those guiding principles

reverberate in all that you’ll do at Elon and

will be an asset to your future career.

Engaged Learning

The university’s signature program, The

Elon Experiences, connects education to the

real world through hands-on learning.

1 Study Abroad - Elon offers 100+ study

abroad programs.

2 Research - Spend a semester, summer or

year conducting original research with a

faculty mentor.

3 Academic Service Learning - Elon connects

students with service opportunities

locally, regionally and around the world.

4 Internships - Elon students intern

at companies and nonprofits all

over the world and many say that

experience opened the door to their

first job. Seventy-nine percent of seniors

participated in at least one internship.

5 Leadership - Elon’s Center for Leadership

helps students learn more about their

leadership interests and empowers them

to be advocates in their communities.

Students involved with the Elon Poll

conduct regional and statewide surveys

on important economic and political

issues in North Carolina and beyond.

Four years ago Dr. Beth Warner’s Working

with Groups and Communities service-learning

class conducted a neighborhood survey

that revealed unmet needs. Since then,

Elon faculty and students have helped

create an advisory board and secured

a state grant for improvements such as

street lighting, walking trails, outdoor

exercise equipment and a dance studio.

John Tumbleston ‘06, a postdoctoral

researcher at North Carolina State

University, is focused on a green energy

project to create materials and devices

that can absorb sunlight to convert into

electricity. He’s committed to academic

work that will make a tangible difference

in the lives of future generations.

Global Interest

The International Studies major provides a

broad knowledge of international affairs

and empowers students to become

experts on one of the world’s regions.

Study abroad and foreign language are

key, and students have considerable

freedom to design their studies.

Students often double major in fields

such as political science, history and

foreign languages.

Elon College offers programs in eight

languages and emphasizes comprehension

within cultural context. Foreign language

living-learning communities and

language clubs are great ways to immerse

yourself in your chosen field. Merveilleux!

Arabic Studies and Middle East Studies promote

a deeper understanding of regional issues

and perspectives. Supported by a grant

from the U.S. Department of Education’s

Undergraduate International Studies and

Foreign Language Program, the programs

include enhanced foreign language

offerings and study abroad opportunities

in the region.

72% of recent graduates spent at least one

term abroad.

These majors are housed in the same department to give students a better understanding of societies. Professors collaborate on initiatives such as Project PERCS, Program for Ethnographic Research and Community Studies, which supports students, faculty and community

leaders in multi-year, interdisciplinary projects focused on social and cultural human interaction.

GLOBAL INTEREST

German StudiesGerman Studies

42 Majors | 19 Departments | 18 Interdisciplinary Minors

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AND

CREATIVITY

Interdisciplinary IntegrationCollaboration is key in the arts and sciences.

What do we mean? Here’s an example:

the Environmental Studies program offers

students a core of classes focused on

ecological understanding. The program’s

strength is considering the environment

from many perspectives, such as

discussing water resources in science,

social science and humanities classes.

Students use that knowledge to further

careers in any number of fields.

The Department of Foreign Languages

and Elon’s Martha and Spencer Love

School of Business collaborated to

create the Business German program, which

connects the study of German language

and culture with post-graduation

career opportunities. The program

features an online component as well

as biweekly labs to provide face-to-face

support. Learn more: www.elon.edu/

businessgerman.

Prelaw and Pre-Health Professions advising

programs help you get into graduate

programs in fields such as law, medicine,

dentistry and veterinary medicine. Both

programs offer opportunities to meet

professionals in the field.

Study abroad meets field research. Dr. Rissa

Trachman, sociology and anthropology,

developed an anthropological field

school in the Eastern Petén Forest of

Northwestern Belize, where she takes Elon

students for summer research.

“It’s a little different from most study

abroad programs because it is an actual

field school. Rather than going to different

places and seeing different archaeological

sites and learning about them, students

come to Belize with me to conduct hands-

on research.”

More than half the music faculty have had a book or composition published, or released a major recording in just the past three years.

Letitia Lee ‘99, has shown her work in galleries and museums across the country and served as a muralist in an episode of the ABC hit show “Extreme Makeover Home Edition.”

Dr. Geoffrey Claussen, coordinates the Jewish Studies program, which exposes students

to religious, cultural, philosophical and linguistic traditions. The program covers topics related to religious

studies, foreign languages, philosophy, history and geography, sociology and anthropology and English.

Periclean scholar Gloria So created her own major, human rights and social justice activism. Gloria and her mentor, Dr. Ken Hassell, art, pose in front of one of her photos taken during an internship in Lithuania. She found the internship through the Isabella Cannon Center for Leadership and plans to use imagery in her major.

High Academic StandardsElon College students are academically

talented and intellectually curious.

They pursue a broad range of scholarly

interests and find success in professions

and graduate schools across the country

and around the world.

For an additional challenge, consider the

Elon College Fellows Program. Fifty Fellows are

selected each year based on their high

school academic performance, interviews

and essay. All Fellows receive a $1,000

Elon Experiences grant, research support

and a $4,500 scholarship. Learn more and

apply: www.elon.edu/fellows.

Dr. Maureen Vandermaas-Peeler,

psychology, serves as a mentor to students

developing research interests. She includes

students in her research and collaborates

with alumni on published work.

Each spring, Elon devotes an entire day to SURF

(Spring Undergraduate Research Forum), an

event during which hundreds of students

and faculty present original research.

Elon hosts a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa,

the nation’s oldest and most prestigious

academic honor society. Only about 10

percent of colleges and universities in the

U.S. shelter Phi Beta Kappa chapters.

Elon College alumni achieve and succeed across

the professional spectrum. Graduates

work with organizations such as the

Smithsonian Institute, SAS Institute, Inc.,

the Peace Corps, the Oakland Museum of

California, Credit Suisse, Teach for America

and the U.S. Census Bureau. Alumni also

pursue graduate degrees at institutions

including the University of Chicago,

Harvard University, Yale University,

Columbia University, Duke University and

American University.

42% of Elon students

work with faculty on research beyond

course requirements.

Dr. Rissa Trachman, assistant professor of sociology and anthropology, developed an anthropological field school in the Eastern Petén Forest of Northwestern Belize, where she takes Elon students for summer research.

Academic Discovery

The Elon College faculty believe

scholarship and teaching are inseparable

because scholarship is the foundation of

teaching. They share their knowledge in

publications, presentations at national

and international conferences and in their

daily interactions with students.

Like all Elon College faculty, Dr. Ben

Evans, physics, is a teacher and a mentor. He

co-authored a manuscript with three

Elon students, worked with students as

they presented at the annual meeting of

the Biophysical Society and mentored

a student who received an Honorable

Mention from the Goldwater Foundation.

Elon’s campus is designed for academic

discovery. Students learn and explore in

high-tech spaces such as McMichael Science

Center, which is being renovated for three

new teaching labs and classrooms for

environmental science, engineering and

biology. The new space will also feature

enhanced undergraduate research areas

for physics and biology, and will include

a new space for engineering students

and an enhanced space for the Center for

Environmental Studies.

Niclas Stiernholm ’89 is the CEO

of Trillium Therapeutic, a Canadian

biopharmaceutical company. After

graduating from Elon, he earned a

doctoral degree in immunology from

the University of Toronto and worked

for several corporate and scientific

advisory boards, including the Ontario

Genomic Institute and the Ontario

Bioscience Industry Organization.

Dr. Toddie Peters, religious studies, is a

well-published author and has become

the go-to person within the field of

Christian social ethics when it comes to

addressing issues facing the church and

Leadership Studies

“Elon prepared me for my professional life by giving me a broad background. As CEO you deal with a lot of people, and nothing makes a person feel more appreciated than when they see you know about their culture or background. I know for instance

about Hinduism because I took that in my years at Elon.”

Niclas Stiernholm ‘89CEO, Trillium Therapeutic

46% of Elon students hold at least one

leadership position before graduating.

79% of recent graduates undertook at least

one internship.

the world. “My philosophy of scholarship

incorporates four complementary tasks:

writing and publishing, teaching and

mentoring, service to the profession and

service to society,” Peters says.

Innovative Facilities

Elon’s 30-acre Loy Farm is being

transformed into a multidisciplinary eco-hub.

The innovative learning environment will

serve as a lab, meeting area and storage

space to be used by faculty and students

pursuing projects related to sustainable

food production, environmental studies

and green architecture.

Martha S. and Carl H. Lindner Hall is the

35,590-square-foot home of Elon College. It

has LEED Gold certification and includes

flexibile teaching spaces and changing

rooms for those who choose to bike

to campus. A touchscreen in the lobby

displays real-time energy expenditures

for all the major uses in the building

including the energy generation of the

building’s solar systems.

A new math and statistics computer lab in

Duke Building allows the Department

of Mathematics and Statistics to offer

a wide variety of courses that use

specialized software.

Powell House provides a new home for art

history, a renovated space for the Elon

Academy and a new resource room for

women’s/gender studies and the LGBTQ

student organization.

The Global Neighborhood will be an

international-themed residential area that

will include the Isabella Cannon Global

Education Center and foreign language

living-learning communities. Elon’s

Lakeside Dining Hall will be next door and

will feature food selections from around

the world.

Robot wars: Students build and program robots with ultrasonic sensors to seek, track and push their opposition

out of the ring in a “Sumo Bot” tournament. The program brought together students from a variety

of disciplines - physics, engineering, computer science - to hone their programming and design skills.
