Game NotesLast Time Out: The Soaring Eagles dropped to 3-5 in Em-pire 8 play and 6-9 overall after falling to Nazareth College, 62-41, Tuesday night. Alex Balara ’15 scored a team-high 14 points and added a game-high four steals while Karli Poch-kar ’16 chipped-in 11 points and four rebounds.

A Rookie Season for the Ages: Danielle Cleary ’18 has made an immediate impact on the court for the Purple and Gold in her inaugural season, leading the team in scoring (14.4 ppg), three-point field goals made (29), and tying for the team lead in blocks (13). Cleary, if all else holds, will become the first Elmira rookie to lead the team in scor-ing since Kourtney Troutman ’08 paced the 2004-05 Soar-ing Eagles with a 10.2 points per game average in her first season. Additionally, if the season ended today, Cleary’s 14.4 points per game average would mark the highest scor-ing average produced by an Elmira freshman since Martha Bolduc ’97 averaged 13.6 points per game in 1993-94.

The Pick-Pocket: Alex Balara ’15 has displayed a level of thievery throughout her career that only a handful of El-mira players have shown in the last decade. Balara notched her eighth game this season, out of just 11 played, with at least three steals against Nazareth and became just the fourth Elmira player since 2005-06 to reach 200 career steals. Balara ranks fourth in that time in total steals with 203 and second in career steals per game at 2.4.

Looking Ahead: The EC women have just over a week off before their next competition as they host Penn College on Monday, February 2nd in a game rescheduled from Decem-ber 2nd. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Speidel Gym-nasium.

Game NotesRed Dragons at a Glance: SUNY Cortland enters today’s matchup with an 11-3 overall record. Cortland ranks sec-ond in the SUNYAC in points per game at 66.6. The Red Dragons also rank first in scoring defense, only allowing their opponents to score 54.2 points per game. Cortland has the largest scoring margin of any teams in the SUNYAC, outscoring their opponents by an average of 12.4 points per game.

Limiting Opponent Free-Throws: Part of the reason the Red Dragons are so successful is that Cortland does not send their opponents to the free throw line too often. The Red Drag-ons average just 13.8 personal fouls per contest, the 13th-best average in the nation, just 1.7 more than national leader, Im-maculata University.

Scouting SUNY Cortland: After winning nine of their first 10 games of the season, the Red Dragons have cooled down a bit, going 2-2 in their last four games after suffer-ing a pair of losses to SUNYAC rival Geneseo. Cortland was outscored in those three losses by just 5.3 points per game. Leading the charge for Cortland this season has been Hartwick College transfer, Brittney Dumas ’16, whose 17.9 points per game average not only leads the Red Dragons but also the SUNYAC.

Series History vs. the Red Dragons: SUNY Cortland has won each of the last 13 matchups against the Soaring Eagles, dating back to the 2001-02 season. The closest the Purple and Gold have come to defeating the Red Dragons in that time was in the 2006-07 season when the EC women fell 71-70.
