The Story of Susanna(Cluster Reading)

Page 6: Eighth commandment

Once upon a time during the time of Daniel, the prophet, there was a

Hebrew woman named Susanna. She is the wife of Joakim whose house functions as a courthouse for the Jewish community. Susanna was beautiful and righteous and was

trained by her parents according to the law of Moses.

Page 7: Eighth commandment

Two elders who served at their house as judges separately

developed a strong desire toward Susanna, whom they spy walking

in the garden when the house was already empty.

Page 8: Eighth commandment

One day, the two elders caught each other lingering behind to watch

Susanna and they plan together to entrap her.

Page 9: Eighth commandment

It was a hot day when Susanna decided to bathe in the garden.

When Susanna sent her maids to get ointments, the two elders

showed themselves to Susanna.

Page 10: Eighth commandment

They said that if she will not spend time with them, they will testify that she sent her maids away in order to

be with a young lover.

Page 11: Eighth commandment

Susanna was in a dilemma: whether to obey the elders and disobey the law of Moses or to resist the elders and face death

penalty, the consequence of adultery, the elders’ false

accusation of her.

Page 12: Eighth commandment

Susanna finally told them, “I choose not to do what you are saying. I’d

rather die than to sin in the sight of the Lord.”

Page 13: Eighth commandment

Susanna cried as loud as she could. The elders also shouted as

she was crying. Their shoutings attracted the servants and

Susanna’s husband, Joakim.

Page 14: Eighth commandment

When the household came to the garden, the two elders falsely accused Susanna of seeing a young lover at the

garden.

Page 15: Eighth commandment

Susanna’s trial occurred the following day. Susanna was

arrested and was about to be put to death because no one was there

to testify for her. However, a young man named Daniel

interrupted the proceedings.

Page 16: Eighth commandment

Daniel exclaimed that the elders should also be questioned separately

to prevent death of an innocent.

Page 17: Eighth commandment

The two elders were placed in separate rooms and were asked about the details of what they

saw.

Page 18: Eighth commandment

Daniel asked the first elder, “Under which tree did you see them?”

The first elder said, “Under the mastic tree.”

Page 19: Eighth commandment

Daniel asked the second elder, “Under which tree did you see

them?”The second elder explained,

“Under the oak tree.”

Page 20: Eighth commandment

Daniel knew then that the two elders were lying. The great difference in size

between a mastic tree and an oak tree makes the elders’ lie clear to all

observers.

Page 21: Eighth commandment

The false accusers were put to death and the truth

triumphed.

Page 22: Eighth commandment

What happened

to Susanna?

Page 23: Eighth commandment

Who helped Susanna?

Page 24: Eighth commandment

What could have

happened to Susanna

if Daniel did not

interrupt in the court trial?

Why is it important

to tell the truth?
