Different types of pollutions

1. Water Pollution- contamination of bodies of water by pollutants like chemicals, insecticides, or food processing wastes.

2. Light Pollution- excessive amounts of light that results in poor visibility of night stars.

Effects: Less sleep, more energy being consumed, and no darkness.

3. Soil Pollution- pollution of soil with non organic materials such as harsh chemicals, heavy metals, or oil.

4. Air Pollution- contaminants found in the atmosphere derived from gases.

Air pollution harms our lungs

Noise Pollution

Sounds that disrupts the activity or balance of human or animal life.

Noise pollution causes high blood pressure, hearing and sleep loss, distraction, and lost productivity.

More than ever before, people, especially young people, are losing their sensitivity to hearing because of their exposure to loud noises for longer periods of time.

What noises affect aquatic animals?

Noise pollution from ship engines and sonar systems make it difficult for marine mammals like whales and dolphins, and prevent it from communicating, finding food, and avoiding hazards.

If construction sites, freeways, or outdoor concerts are near, it will also interrupt the natural habitat.

How does it affect them?

Animals may become afraid of noise over time and flee in terror if a loud sound suddenly happens. In the process, they may get trampled.

Excessive noise has the ability to raise an animal’s heart beat speed, and even harms an animal’s metabolism.

Animals rely on sound for prey detection and communication, so if noise is present, animals will not be able to find food or communicate because when they emit sound to prey, the only thing they hear in return is human-made noise.

Why does it affect animals?

Noise disturbs the natural habitat and creates a huge impact. If band practice was placed outside of this class everyday, would it affect your attention span?

How do we prevent it?

According to the Noise Pollution Clearinghouse, "Noise is among the most pervasive pollutants today.”

1. Switching to newer models of machinery2. Installing noise barriers3. Limiting heavy vehicles4. Improving roadway surface texture You can help by doing some simple steps that

anybody can do. Just place a soundproof material, like rubber or some curtains, around anything that is noisy to absorb that sound.
