You may or may not have noticed it, but Facebook just installed a fairly significant overhaul of their “pages” last night. We thought we’d take a moment to let you know what this might mean for you and your page.

To start, go to your page on Facebook as an admin and select “Preview” to start test-driving the new site. Facebook offers up a tour of their own, which we recommend looking at first, but hopefully our info will help clarify a bit more.

IMPORTANT: Choosing “Convert” will make your adoption of the new page permanent. Scary, yes, but they’ll be switching all pages over on March 11 regardless, so perhaps it’s best to be proactive?

Featured ImagesThe new layout will display 5 images at the top of your page. By default, these are the 5 most recent images added by you.

Idea: You cannot remove this, nor choose how many images are shown, but you can control WHICH images are shown, by hovering and clicking the “x” in the top right of an image to remove it, or uploading a new image to add to it. It’s not entirely intuitive, but hey, maybe that’ll come in the next update : )

Profile Image Size ChangeThe maximum allowable profile image size has changed from 200x600 to 180x540. For now, that means your image has been cropped and/or re-sized to fit the new area.

Idea: Moving forward, keep your images to this overall size or this maximum width with a different height.

Use Facebook as PageYou now have the option to switch between using Facebook as YOU or as your PAGE. This can be toggled at any time. (see red oval)

Idea: Post something to the page of a B-to-B prospect as your page.

For another cool idea, click “Edit Info” (green oval above) and see the next page of this doc.

Comment on your Page as YOUWe’re really excited about this one. Ever wanted to post on your page as YOU instead of as your PAGE? Now it’s finally possible, without any crazy work-arounds. Just go to “Your Settings” and uncheck the “Always comment...” checkbox, toggle the setting from the previous page of this doc to be “YOU”, and comment as your true identity.

Where are my tabs??If your page used to have “Tabs” at the top... well, they’re still around. Just not where you expect them. These items have moved to the left column beneath your profile image.

Why? The consensus seems to be that Facebook wants to encourage interaction with fans vs. more “website”-like treatments found on some tabs.

Can I still default to a tab?If you want first-time or non-fan visitors to see a specific tab first instead of your wall, you can still do this. Just choose from the “default landing tab” menu seen above.

Potty Mouth controlsConcerned about people using choice words on your page? Now you can choose the words to block - as well as implement a standard “profanity” filter.
