Measure. Monitor. Motivate.

• How much growth are your independent readers showing a year and what should you expect or aim for?

• Is your reading assessment data research-based and on a continuous developmental scale so you can track development over several years?

• How can you use your data to inform and evaluate teaching practice?

• How can you use your data to develop students’ independent reading skills?

What do you know about your students’ reading performance?

ASSESS reader ability and text complexity on the same developmental scale – Lexile.

What is a Lexile?• Lexile is the only reading comprehension

measurement that finds the right books by measuring readers and texts on the same scale.

• Over 30 years of scientific research make Lexile measures reliable and accurate from beginning readers to adult, for 1st and 2nd language learners.

• Over 100 million articles, books, websites – and students – have been measured for Lexile scores

ASSESSMENT

Sentence Length / Syntactic Complexity

• Longer sentences typically contain more clauses therefore more information to process.

• This increases the difficulty of a text.

• Certain words are used more frequently increasing understanding and the ability to infer meaning.

• Less familiar words impede reading fluency and affect comprehension.

He stroked the shell and whispered, ‘Come out sea, come out, I won’t hurt you.’ He waited and waited. Nothing happened. Then he heard a swish-swishing noise and the sea rushed out of the shell.Extracted from There’s a Sea in My Bedroom by Margaret Wild; 410L

Nothing like this man had ever been seen in Privet Drive. He was tall, thin and very old, judging by the silver of his hair and beard, which were both long enough to tuck into his belt. He was wearing long robes, a purple cloak which swept the ground and high-heeled buckled boots. His blue eyes were light, bright and sparkling, behind half-moon spectacles and his nose was very long and crooked, as though it had been broken at least twiceHarry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Chris Ratcliffe

Name: Chris RatcliffeSchool: Stoneridge SchoolYear/Grade: 4 Dear Parent or Caregiver, Chris has completed the LitPro Test, a test that evaluates students’ reading levels. In the test, students read fiction and nonfiction passages drawn from books and informational materials. They then complete sentences that measure their understanding of what they’ve read. Based on this, the test generates a reading comprehension level unique to each student’s responses.

Chris has scored a 550 Lexile measure. The Lexile reading range for a year/grade 4 student is 480-630L. Chris’s reading score is based on the Lexile Framework. It is a scale that matches readers to books. When Chris’s reading level (Lexile) is around the Lexile level of a book, Chris can read that book with confidence and control. At this target rate of comprehension, material is challenging

Certificates are based on points they have earned or number of books read
