Pop Art

What is Pop Art? Followed Abstract expressionism movement which started in the 1940s.

o 1st specifically American art movement to achieve international acclaim and put NYC as the center of the western art world.

o Emphasized form and color within a nonrepresentational framework (ABSTRACT)

An art movement that emerged in the mid 1950s in Britain and in the late 1950s in the U.S. and returned art to a representational form.

Took imagery from popular culture such as advertising, comics, magazines, newspapers, packaging, etc..

Sometimes visually removed from its known context, isolated, and/or combined with unrelated material.

Appealed to the masses rather than distancing (elitist) art from the masses

FOR OUR PROJECT:Problem: Choose an item or set of items that represents today’s Pop culture and recreate that item using clay and glazes.

Judgment: The success of your project will be determined by your ability to realistically recreate your object using clay and glazes. Therefore, you will be judged through the aesthetic theory of ___________________? As always, you will also be assessed on your participation and effort during class.

Timeframe: You will have 3 class periods to decide on your subject, conduct any preliminary research or sketches, and construct your item from clay. If you finish early, you may make multiple items, however, you are expected to use your entire 3 class periods constructing your item(s) from clay. We will then use 1-2 periods glazing your items.
