PRESIDENT’S REPORT Word of mouth has it that our Thanksgiving lunch was a great success. Our turkey

extravaganza was enjoyed by 110 people and we were honoured by the presence of Mayor Jim Watson, two of his Councillors, Tim Tierney and Rainer Bloess, as well as the provincial MPP Phil McNeely and the federal MP Royal Galipeau.

Many thanks to our Head Cook, Denise Dunac, for working her magic once again. Thanks to everyone who assisted her from beginning to end with the food preparation including the carving of the turkeys, cutting up the vegetables, setting the tables, serving the

meal, taking the tables down, the cleaning up and the dishes – Shirley Edmonds, Vera Finnigan, Donna Wilson, Roger Carrière, Lynn Gervais, Diane Daka, Cécile Schryburt, André Gascon, Guy Bégin, Albert Faucher, Betty & Jim Eadie, Donna Wilson, Lise Gaudaur, Lise Malouin, Debbie Trickey, Jackie Lafontaine, Max Dunac and the students from Lester B. Pearson. Your help as usual is always appreciated. I apologize for any oversights if I did not mention your name. I do hope you will continue to provide your comments or suggestions for improving the Centre. The suggestion box (located not far from the Front Desk) is checked weekly and I do a follow-up with anything that is brought to my attention.

I invite you to check out the Centre‟s Website. Ralph Scribner is our WebMaster and he recently updated it and revised some of the photos. Looks great Ralph!

As we approach the festive season, I would like to remind you that again this year the Centre will be participating in sponsoring two families through the Shepherds of Good Hope. Our Angel Tree along

with a list identifying either items for the food basket or gifts for the families will be available before the end of November. I hope we can count on you once again to help out those in need.

While most of our members are seniors, we sometimes forget that the younger people sometimes lend a hand to help at the Centre. Matter of fact, just recently, we had the help of a young lad by the name of Darcy Ryman (he is Betty Joanisse‟s grandson). Darcy helped “roll straws” in preparation for the Bazaar and Tinsel Tea coming up in November. Way to go Darcy!

You may recall last year we were able to offer uncooked frozen tourtières from La Binerie at a cost of $6.00 each. As this was a very successful program, we are pleased to offer it again this year along with a few additional choices. Order forms and a sign-up sheet will be available at the Front Desk in November. Orders must be paid in full by Wednesday, December 7th. The delivery date is scheduled for Tuesday, December 13th and all orders must be picked up by 2:00 p.m. on the same day.

Looking ahead, many exciting events await us in 2012 including Debbie‟s retirement party in March or April and the 25

th anniversary of our Centre next November. More details to follow in

subsequent issues of the 2020.

Reminder to all members to keep track of any volunteer time that you do on behalf of the Centre. There is a binder located at the Front Desk where your time can be recorded. This information is very valuable to the Centre. Debbie compiles this information into a report that she provides to the Province every six months.

Reminder – The Centre will be closed for the Christmas holidays between December 24th and January 2nd inclusive. Our next issue of the 20/20 will be available on December 15 and will include a listing of our activities and courses which will begin in January. In the meantime, I hope every one has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you in 2012!

Executive Director Report

Thanksgiving Weekend was spectacular, what a great fall we have had both with the weather and at the Centre. The Round-Up Pancake Breakfast served up by the Board of Directors was well attended and a good kick off for the season. All of our regular activities are back, the quilters are sewing up a storm, the sand bag baseball players are as fun filled and noisy as ever, the stamp club is pouring over new acquisitions, the Songsters have had their initial practices, and the list goes on. Lessons have started. The chair yoga class was so large we had to create a second class. The exercise classes are also booming. It is wonderful to see people being active. Patrick McGarry

gave a very informative workshop on funeral pre-planning. There are brochures available if you missed the session. Thanksgiving Dinner was a true feast. Denise and her volunteers did an excellent job, thank you to all. We had an unexpected guest when Mayor Jim Watson joined us for dinner. Our local councillor Tim Tierney invited him that morning; Tim is a great supporter of our Centre. The Pfizer Health Promotion Tour is October 18; it is always a first rate day with informative presentations and entertainment. Many members of the Board have been working on the Older Adult Centres Association of Ontario Conference, which we are hosting in Ottawa, October 22-25. It has been more than a year of planning. We are proud of the program and events we will be offering to members of seniors centres from across Ontario. Our biggest fundraising event of the year is our Tinsel Tea and Bazaar, Saturday, November 5, 10 am – 2 pm. We need lots of help to make it a success. The Straw Draw is always our biggest moneymaker however it requires lots of small new items. Re-gifting is quite permissible for this, such as the candle or soap someone gave you last Christmas or the lamp or serving tray you know you will never use. Of course white elephant items, baking, sewing, crafts, knitting, books, jewellery, sandwiches and sweets for the tearoom, small paintings and preserves are also needed. For more details check the sign up sheets at the Centre. Remembrance Day will be celebrated November 10 with our Thursday Dinner followed by our intergenerational ceremony with the students from Lester B. Pearson High School. Tickets are now available. For those that hate to shop at the mall we will be hosting a Fifth Avenue Jewellery sale, Thursday, November 17, 10 am – noon. It wouldn‟t be November without our St. Andrew’s Day Lunch, November 24. Dig out your kilt and join our resident Scots for a day of Scottish food and fun. Our Speakers Series continues, December 1, 10 am, with Irene Bilinski of Keller Williams talking about “Downsizing”. Christmas will be celebrated in many ways. Two one-day trips: the first, the ever popular “A Good Old Fashioned Christmas Party” to St. Eustache on December 1, cost $90 payable to Ottawa Valley Tours and the second to Chateau Montebello and Christmas Light Tour, December 16, cost $80 also payable to Ottawa Valley Tours. December 15 is our traditional Christmas Dinner of turkey with all the trimmings; tickets must be purchased in advance. December 22 is the Christmas Lunch and Carol Sing-Along. The carols get underway at 11:15 am and tourtière is featured for lunch. Each year we sponsor two families and a senior with our Angel Tree. The tree will be out in November with gift items and food for a Christmas Dinner for our sponsored families. The deliveries are traditionally made the week before Christmas. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Happy New Year.

Thursday, Nov 10 – Remembrance Day Celebration. Lunch will be at 12 noon. Cost $12. Together with the students from Lester B. Pearson High School, we will commemorate Remembrance Day with a special intergenerational ceremony at 1 pm.

Thursday, Nov 17, 10 am – Fifth Avenue Jewellery Sale. This is a great opportunity to do some Christmas shopping without having to fight the crowds at the mall.

Thursday, Nov 24, 12 noon – Saint Andrew’s Day Lunch. Celebrate the patron saint of Scotland with our resident Scots. Find your kilt and be ready to sample a taste of haggis. Cost $10.

Saturday, Nov 26, 9:30 am to 3 pm – Oil and Watercolour Painting Workshop. Kathy Harker-Fiander will offer the opportunity to paint a simple still life painting. Cost $50 member $60 non-member.

Thursday, Dec 1, 10 am – Speaker’ Series “Downsizing”. Irene Bilinski of Keller Williams will share her expertise in available options: smaller home, renting, seniors‟ residence, assistance required, repairs to your home, packing and storage, financial planning and more.

Monday, Dec 12, 1 pm – Chic Flic “Water for Elephants”. A veterinary student abandons his studies after his parents are killed and joins a travelling circus as their vet. Pop & popcorn $2 member $3 non-member.

Thursday, Dec 15, 11:30 am – Enjoy punch and a social time before our Traditional Christmas Dinner of turkey with all the trimmings. Cost $18. Tickets must be purchased in

advance.

Thursday, Dec 22, 12 noon – Christmas Lunch and Carol Sing-Along. Join us at 11:15 for a Christmas sing-along

followed by a special tourtière lunch at noon. Cost $10.00.

Blood Pressure Clinic – Third Thursday of the month at 11:15. Our thanks to AMICA at Bearbrook for sponsoring the clinics. Footcare Clinic – Provided by nurse Mary Jane Rocque every second Wednesday. Appointments must be made in advance. Cost $18

member, $21 non-member. Food Services – A cafeteria-style lunch is served daily except Thursday from 11:30 am – 12:45 pm. Thursday enjoy a sit-down hot dinner

at noon for $8.00. Reservations for Thursday must be made by Tuesday at noon. Special dinners may have an additional cost and tickets will be sold in advance. THURSDAY LUNCHES: This is a reminder to please sign your name in the “luncheon book” by the end of the day every Tuesday. Based on the number of “sign-ups”, our cook, Denise, will be able to shop accordingly for our Thursday meals.

Reminder MILK BAGS are used to make bed mats for Haiti and Africa. All bags should be flat and clean and deposited in the bin in the front hall.

Lay a Wreath on December 4th

(Submitted by Bruce Kettles) Wreaths Across Canada has chosen to place a wreath on the headstone of every veteran buried in the National Military Cemetery, on the first Sunday of every December starting December 4, 2011 at 1:30pm. It is our fervent hope that this practice will spread across Canada and that eventually every Military Cemetery will be adorned with wreaths, each and every year. This simple but effective "thank you" is central to the entire program. The wreaths symbolize our thanks to those who have served their country in the military and now lie at rest. Whether they died in battle, training accidents or years after retiring from the military, all who lie buried in these hallowed grounds deserve the thanks of a grateful nation for defending the freedoms and lifestyle we enjoy today.It is our way to Remember and Honour those who served and Teach our youth of

In Sympathy Our sympathy to Elizabeth Bullock on the death of her mother September 4. Our sympathy as well to Peter Chan, our tai chi instructor, on the passing of his wife this summer.
