2018/19 Season Underway

The Wobbler#wccredcaps THE ONLY PLACE TO GET ALL THE REDCAP NEWS Est.1942/43

Issue No. 1 – 2018/19

Welcome to a new cricket season. Many

senior and junior players have been training

regularly for some weeks now under the

guidance of senior coach Peter Le Leivre

and Junior coordinators David Knight, Leigh

Cassidy and Tim Argall.

Max Drew continues to lead our club as

president and Matt Jones has undertaken

the role of secretary. Matt will also captain

one of our 3rd XI’s. Our other senior captains

are Gavin Webb, 1st XI, with Ryan

Simmonds as vice captain, Justin

Howlett,2nd XI, Luke Robertson 3rd XI, as

mentioned Matt Jones and also Angus

McFangus. We are in the unique position of

having three 3rd XI teams all playing in the

same grade so no doubt there will be plenty

of banter when these teams meet each other

during the course of the season.

The club chose to enter the additional team

into the thirds competition as we wanted our

players to have the opportunity to play as

many 2 day games as possible especially

considering the number of younger players

coming through the ranks. Playing in a lower

grade would have meant that our ‘5th’ team

would have only played 1 day matches.

As always we thank Brett ‘The Hound’

Godson and his kitchen elves for the

sensation meals that he has put on already

this season.

The pasta night at the season launch and

the burgers on the first selection night was

magnificent.

Juniors New PlayersWe also welcome a number of new and returning players to

the club this season namely:

• Tom Hannett (Navarre)

• Liam Hurse (Carisbrook)

• Anthony Carlyon [Harry’s dad – out of retirement]

• Mat Begbie (Melbourne Cricket Club)

• Adam Ridley (returning from sabbatical)

• Hugh Knight (returning from Caulfield)

• Norm Hughes (also returning from sabbatical)

• Uwais Mohammad (Ingleburn RSL CC in Sydney)

• Cooper Gregory (East Ballarat)

Furthermore, it is especially pleasing to see a number of

Under 15 & U17 players coming through the ranks and

training with the senior group.

From a junior perspective David Knight, Tom Argall, Leigh

Cassidy and Natarsha Williams have continued to put

considerable time into preparing and planning for our

numerous junior teams as they approach the commencement

of their season this coming Saturday. Also, thank you to those

parents and players who have offered to coach, manage and

support our underage teams this season.

CommitteeThe club welcomes Gabby Howlett [ wife of Justin and mum

of Liam] onto our executive committee. Gabby’s expertise

and contribution at committee level will be of great benefit to

our club.

We thank outgoing committee members, Justin Howlett,

Derek Hunt, Bridget and Liam Brady for their service during

their tenure on the committee.

Refurbished Storage Shed 1st XI Round 2The boys made the journey down to Darley for Round 2 this

week.

Lucas Argall from our U17’s made his 1st XI debut.

Darley elected to bat and made 136 before being bowled out

in the 45th over. Lucas Argall 2/30 off 10, Ben Evans 3/24 off

8 and Jonty Wall 3/29 off 9 did the damage.

A shaky start saw us 2/18 before Heath Pyke & Mat Begbie

steadied the ship. Mat Begbie saw us home with a display of

patient and class batting to finish on 57*.

Special thanks to Brett Godson and Tim Argall for their

fantastic work during the ‘off season’ in re-shaping and

shelving, the storage facility at our training nets. It is a

brilliant set up and certainly makes access to, and storage of,

our equipment very convenient.

1st XI - Round 1On a magnificent day weather -wise, our 1st XI commenced

their season last Saturday against North Ballarat with a

convincing win. This year the first XI started a week earlier

than all other teams.

Despite an ‘ordinary’ start in the field, we were able to

dismiss the opposition for 186 and then achieved this target

very comfortably with 13 overs to spare and losing just one

wicket. Jack Peeters and Jonty Wall both claimed took 4

wickets while Ryan Simmonds and Cole Roscholler

dominated with the bat each scoring 75 runs. Hugh Knight

took 3 catches behind the stumps … and in his first game

with the club, Tom Hannett took 2 very important catches.

Well done to Webby and his team.

Congratulations to all junior players who

started the season in good spirits and

played the game the way we expect at

Wendouree.

The results are never the most important

Cricket Australia

Community ChampionNatarsha Williams has been nominated as a Community

Champion for all the work she has done with Cricket

Without Boundaries.

For those who aren’t familiar with Cricket Without

Boundaries, it’s the initiative that Nat and her family

started a few years ago assisting the local indigenous

community with the help of Lany Johnson who worked at

BADAC at the time. CWB is now sending pre-loved

cricket and sporting gear all over the world.

We’ve send cricket gear to orphanages in India,

indigenous communities in the Tiwi Islands, Vanuatu and

most recently 26 boxes of gear was sent to Bangladesh.

A film crew came to Ballarat this weekend and interviewed

Natarsha and a few people fro the club and took some

footage that will be put together into a short 3-4 minute

clip that will be shown at the breaks of all Test Matches

around Australia over the summer.

This is very well deserved recognition for Natarsha and all

the work she and her family and others have put in to the

Cricket Without Boundaries initiative.

Donations Wanted

Over November and December we are going to send

some gear to Nepal through a group called ‘Aussie Action

Abroad’. They are looking to support a project in Nepal

called ‘play for positive change’ which is looking to help

communities affected by the two earth quakes in Nepal in

2015. This project involves working with the local

communities in Nepal ‘to provide opportunities to access

sports activities and coaching to some of the country’s

most disadvantaged young people, especially women and

girls’.

As well as supplying cricket gear we are hoping to gather

some other sporting equipment we could send. If anyone

has any sporting equipment that they are no longer using

that is still in working order, please consider donating it to

the children in Nepal.

Natarsha will place a bin in the shed at the nets - if you

would like to place donations in there or give them to her

directly she will arrange to get them sorted and packed

ready for shipping.

Any sport is great, cricket, football, netball, volleyball,

rugby, tennis, badminton, etc

Stay in Touch

This year the Senior Players and Coaches will be using

the Team App to communicate.

Any player who hasn’t downloaded the Team App should

do it NOW.

Past players and supporters can keep up to date with

what’s happening around the club by following us on

Facebook

https://www.facebook.com/red.caps.3/

.

The Wobbler

Also anyone can download the MyCricket App from the

App Store and follow the live scores each weekend.

Well worth doing if you are interested in seeing the ball-

by-ball scores when the teams are live scoring on their

iPad

This week all of our other senior grades, together with our

junior teams, began their season and we look forward in

particular to watching our many younger players continue

to develop their skills. We will have a number of 15,16

and 17 year old lads playing in our senior teams … so

exciting times are ahead as these youngsters are guided

and encouraged by their senior teammates.

Onward and Upward!
