Orphaned at 3 years old taken in by John and Frances Allan

Entered the University of Virginia, but left within a year due to drinking

& gambling.

Allan refused to help with the $2,000 in debt that Poe accumulated

At 18, he fights with Allan and joins the army, but is discharged 2 years later

In 1834, Allan dies and leaves Poe nothing

At 26, he proposes to his 13 year old cousin, Virginia Clemm

In 1847, Virginia Clemm dies of tuberculosis

Poe dies in Baltimore, Maryland on October 7, 1849

Only received $15 for the original printing

Poe did not profit much from the reprints, but it helped him establish a better

reputation

Wanted to use the most melancholy topic known

to mankind – death of a beautiful lover

Most likely written during 1844, when Clemm was seriously ill
