OPENING LETTERMYRIAM LAROCHE, president of eco fashion week

Welcome, Bienvenue to the fifth edition of Eco Fashion Week (EFW). Our team has once again put together an engaging event showcasing eco-conscious collections for Spring/Summer 2013.

EFW strives to fashion the industry towards more responsible modes of designing, manufacturing, distributing, and marketing clothes, in the hopes that adjacent industries might also follow in its footsteps. EFW also seeks to educate consumers on how to buy, use and dispose of garments sustainably. The time has come to change our ways, to ensure a healthy planet.

Thanks to all of our fabulous sponsors, partners, designers, buyers, speakers, and media. We appreciate you for being open to change and believing in us. You are the apples of our eyes!

My last words go to the talented team. I am grateful to be surrounded by such strong, passionate people that care and share in the Eco Fashion Week mis-sion — to be part of the eco-revolution!

Yours truly,

Myriam Laroche, President of Eco Fashion Week

She was then ready to put her design and business sides together to create her own label of socially conscious contemporary women’s wear, Nicole Bridger.

MAlA iMPoRTSTuEsdAY OcTOBER 16, 7:00PMBeing responsible is engrained in Mala Import's every step – from how the jewelry is made in Bali, to thinking about who’s benefiting when it’s bought in stores. The creation process in Bali provides numerous jobs for locals — from the planting of the rudraksha trees, to the harvesting stage. The jewelry is fair trade, and ethically produced. And those who make the jewelry in Bali all benefit from profit sharing of worldwide sales. In addition, support is given to the high priests in Bali, Indonesia who often perform their ceremonies for free.

nicoleTTe lAng-AndeRSen WEdNEsdAY OcTOBER 17, 7:00 PMNicolette, a Fashion & Personal Stylist now living in Vancouver, was born and raised in a small seaside town in South Africa. She studied at the British College of Professional Styling and her last 3 years have been dedicated to establishing herself as a Fashion & Personal Stylist. She is widely known within the network and has collaborated with various Vancouver designers, boutiques, photographers, make-up artists, stylists and more in a bid to promote fashion within the city.

ThuRdAY OcTOBER 18, 7:00 PMRessac : French for “rip current”. A strong subsurface flow of water return-ing seaward from the shore resulting usually from the action of waves.

Creating bags made from inner tubes of bicycle tires, Ressac trans-forms punctured inner tubes into locally made bags and accessories.

Ressac's products' uniqueness is the result of the creator's idea in combining rubber's water resistant property and durability with the urban look reminiscent of leather. The variety of bags designed by Anne Painchaud-Ouellet satisfies the desire for elegance as well as the need for convenience. Ressac products are eco friendly, attractive and ethical; all at once.

The enterprise is part of an eco-village, established in 1984, creating businesses according to a lifestyle that would include the safeguard of the environment and the respect for people all around our small planet.

Respecterre creates clothing for yoga, sport, and is opening increas-ingly towards casual and elegant designs. ThuRdAY OcTOBER 18, 7:00 PMTo merge ergonomics with a trendy contemporary style, these are the values at the heart of those two young Canadian companies, VOYOU and BLANK. Being stylish should not mean sacrificing comfort. This is why those Canadian clothing line are inspired by today’s active Canadian women and men, who works, are parents, and also lead a life of leisure. By manufacturing their production in Québec, they support the local economy, remain environmentally conscious and ensure that their workers are treated with respect.

ThuRdAY OcTOBER 18, 7:00 PMC5H8 COLLECTION is a Canadian label that specializes in creating fashion accessories made from recycled materials.

C5H8 COLLECTION is a true company of its time that hopes to make sustainable development into a profitable and renewable business model. The company’s goal to achieve this is to create ready-to-wear fashion accessories made from a recyclable material that has very little use in Canada: bicycle tires and air chambers.

The C5H8 COLLECTION label takes its name from the molecular formula of rubber. As a product that is renowned for its sturdiness, waterproof qualities and its likeness to leather, the rubber from recycled bicycle tires is the main material used in our creations.

At C5H8 COLLECTION, we want to offer alternatives to consumers who want to take part in the solution for the environmental crisis.

atelier b.ThuRdAY OcTOBER 18, 7:00 PMThe Montreal label for men and women atelier b. was created by Catherine Métivier and Anne-Marie Laflamme. The complementary roommates, friends and later business partners, have used their collective creativity and dedication to social and environmental responsibility to create a project in their own image. With a passion for design and a dedication to ethical creation, the two designers continue to be motivated by research and innovation, pushing them to work harder, more effectively and almost completely locally.

All of their garments are produced using low-impact textiles: organic cotton, recycled fibres, lyocell and linen. Their clothing is carefully made in Canada in collaboration with social integration organizations and rural family businesses. They use non-toxic screen printing that is water-based instead of oil-based. From waste management to the choice of tags, every little action counts!

SVenSK ThuRdAY OcTOBER 18, 8:00 PM“SVENSK is so much bigger than physical objects – we want to change how people consume”.

The idea for SVENSK came when Diana got a request from a retailer to buy larger volume of her designs. She started researching the fashion industry and after seeing the backside of consumerism, she decided she wanted to try to make an impact in our culture. “It only took a few weeks before I’d sold my business and moved to Stockholm. I knew I had to do it”. She says she wants her questioning nature to transpire into their products, so consumers that come to SVENSK get their thoughts challenged. The goal is not necessarily to sell products, but to increase consciousness in western societies.

standing armed ThuRdAY OcTOBER 18, 8:00 PMstanding armed is a melding of sophistication and ease with focus on classic, timeless pieces of the utmost quality. Their clothing line caters to the modern woman; elegant and feminine, its understated detail flatters the female form lending confidence and allowing personal style to reign. The focus is on natural fabrics and investment pieces that will stand the test of time.

Not only are these brands self-proclaimed leaders and innovators, they also have the size and influence to work with their suppliers to begin bringing about real change on the ground and eliminate the use and release of these hazardous chemicals.Nike, Adidas, Puma, H&M, C&A and Li-Ning have committed to Detox, in response to the growing international campaign. Other top clothing companies still need to get a move on, to Detox their brands and help Detox our future.

KAThARine ShiPley, our Social FabricFRIdAY OcTOBER 19, 6:00 PM – 6:50 PMOur Social Fabric started with the goal of reducing textile waste in our municipal landfill. Our long term goal includes actual textile recycling of which very little occurs in North America. Approximately 16kg of textiles, including clothes, per person, or a total of 33,600 tonnes in Metro Vancouver was deposited into Metro Vancouver landfills in 2006. Our shorter term vision is around creating a Social Enterprise where we have a storefront and hire and train people with employment barriers. Fabric is donated to us via a number of sources and we in turn sell it at reasonable prices. This is all fabric that would otherwise be thrown into the landfill.

Katharine is a Board Member of Our Social Fabric, and a high school teacher with a keen interest and passion for both sewing and recycling. She currently manages the volunteers and monthly sales.

MARK SKlAZeSKi, Sustain uFRIdAY OcTOBER 19, 6:00 PM – 6:50 PMSustainU is a clothing company focused on changing the way clothes are made to improve the environment, reinvigorate America’s manufacturing sector, and educate the world about how clothing can positively impact people’s lives. By creating 100% recycled apparel that is made in the USA, they want people to change the way they think about their clothing, and how they live their lives. Wear a better story.

MeliSSA FeRReiRA, Adhesif clothingFRIdAY OcTOBER 19, 6:00 PM – 6:50 PMMelissa is the Vancouver designer behind Adhesif Clothing Co. Working as a buyer in the vintage clothing industry has inspired Melissa to cre-ate garments with vintage fabrics because of the amazing quality and special characteristics a lot of these textiles own. There is a double advantage in using sustainable materials; not only do they reduce waste, but they add distinctive personality to all of her eye-catching, one-of-a kind creations. Special, hand rendered details are often added to her designs like appliqué, cowboy stitching, hand dying techniques and silk screening. In addition to the fact that all of the designs produced by Adhesif are made from sustainable materials they are also all locally produced in Vancouver, BC.
