Christmas Tree Light-upElton Parish Council would like to invite the residents of Elton and Gratton to the lighting of Elton’sChristmas Trees. This year’s event will take place on Sunday 2 December at 6pm starting at theTown Mere (by the telephone box) where we will light the first of the trees. We will then move onto the church to light the second tree.

There will be carol singing with the Youlgrave Silver Band and afterwards everybody is warmlyinvited to the Village Hall for mince pies, cakes and mulled wine. We hope you will be able to joinus.

Winter MaintenanceElton Parish Council is preparing for the winter months. We have a large supply of grit storedaway which will be used to make sure our grit bins are fully stocked throughout the winter. Thisyear the Parish Council has asked people from the community to adopt a grit bin and keep ittopped up with salt from the Parish Council’s supply. Keeping the bins well stocked will enablepeople to clear snow and ice on the roads and pavements around their homes. It also means wedo not have to rely on the County Council to fill them when the demand is high.

Almost all the bins have been adopted, but the bins on Ivy Lane, East End, Chapel Croft and WestEnd Bungalows have not. If you feel you could volunteer to refill one of these bins throughoutwinter, please contact me using the details below. If you find a grit bin empty, please contact meand I will do my best to get it filled.

The Parish Council would like to remind everybody that the grit in the bins is paid for with publicmoney and should only be used on roads and pavements. The grit is not for use on private prop-erty.

Christmas bin collectionsBin collections in Elton in the two weeks AFTER Christmas day will be one day LATER than usual.So, as bins are normally collected on a Wednesday, they will be collected on a Thursday followingChristmas Day. Your recycling (blue bin/blue box and bag) will be collected on Thursday 27December 2018. Your grey bin or black sacks will be collected on Thursday 4 January 2019.

Food waste will still be collected weekly over the Christmas period as normal.REAL Christmas trees will be collected from the edge of your property between Monday 7January and Friday 1 February for collection. Please make sure all decorations are removed!

3 Village News and Views“Sing Choirs of Angels, Sing in Exaltation”—one of the linesin the familiar hymn “O Come all ye Faithful” It is the Englishversion of "Adeste Fideles" which was written by an English-man John Francis Wade in the mid-eighteenth century. It isa firm favourite, the last verse being saved to sing onChristmas morning as a great shout of joy that our Saviouris born, and that he remains with us in so many ways, andnot just at Christmas. Though we make much of Jesus incelebrating his birth at Christmas, we also need to remem-ber that, in growing up, he remained one of the people andgot involved in the “nitty gritty” of life. He learned Joseph’s

trade at the carpenter’s bench.

Early in the New Year we hope to be able to begin the work on the provision of a toilet in church.With the help of the Diocesan Raymond Ross Fund the Exton Trust along with money raised mainlythrough tea and toast and the Gift Days, we are able to make provision for this new facility whichhas been lacking for so long. We just have one or two hurdles to cross, but we are nearly there. Weare grateful for the generosity of parishioners and for the foresight for the benefit of churches in theDiocese. Perhaps at Christmas, apart from giving gifts, we ought to pause and think of the ways inwhich we receive from people who are in many ways invisible—right throughout the year.

Our Christmas services are published elsewhere in the ‘Echo’, but please do come and join us atsome point, either at the Carol Service on 16th December, or the Crib Service on Christmas Eve orthe early morning Communion service on Christmas Day. You will be most welcome.

The ‘burned-out car’Over recent months a number of people have contacted me about the burned-out car that hasbeen lay in the verge on the first bend when heading towards Bakewell. The car was not onlyunsightly and attracting graffiti, but also causing a distraction to motorists on a dangerous part ofthe road. I discussed the matter with the Police who were not even aware of the problem, hadlittle interest in knowing how the vehicle had come to be there nor wanted to take any furtheraction to deal with the matter. After lengthy discussions with officers at Derbyshire Dales DistrictCouncil they agreed to have the vehicle removed in the interests of road safety. The Council willbe making investigations of their own to find out who the vehicle belongs to.

7 Village News and ViewsUp on the farm. Part 1

I've recently come across some agricultural records for Elton and Gratton but to make sense ofthem I needed to find out about local farming life. Who better to ask than Eleanor Moseley andGeorge Carson. I'm grateful to them both and to Bill Glossop for sharing their memories.

Eleanor's father held the tenancy of a lowland farm near Lichfield but when he died at a youngage in 1950, Eleanor's mother, as a woman, wasn't allowed to take over the tenancy. She usedall her savings to buy her own farm at Grangemill and in November 1950 brought her childrento the hills of Derbyshire. Eleanor remembers being driven over the moor in the snow and felt,she said, “I was coming to the end of the earth”. But the family was soon made welcome in Eltonand the wider area. Eleanor met Roy at a dance in Winster and married in 1960 when theybought Bowling Green Cottage where she still lives. The house has probably been known by thatname since it was built in the 1860s on what was then the village bowling green.

In the 19th century arable crops were a common sight in the fields of Elton and Gratton. In 1870arable covered 200 acres in Elton and over 150 acres in Gratton. Most commonly grown werepotatoes and oats. Potatoes fuelled people and oats fuelled both people and the heavy horsesnecessary for agriculture. In 1900 59 horses were at work on Elton's farms and in those daysthere were nearly as many farms as horses, most of them small dairy farms. Eleanor recalls 21farms still at work in the 1960s but by then, of course, the horse had been replaced by thetractor.

At a time when these vehicles were still a rare sight in the Derbyshire countryside many youngerfarm workers were away fighting in the war. Older men who'd worked with horses most of theirlives didn't know how to drive and were unwilling to learn. Young George Carson, however, waseager to embrace modern technology and Homestead Farm acquired a shiny green FordsonStandard tractor in 1943. The strict conditions laid down by the wartime government requiredthat tractors should not be idle and so 15-year-old George got plenty of driving practice doingcontracting work. Neighbouring farmers were soon trusting him to drive their cattle trucks toand from market.

Bill Glossop recalls the names of over 40 keepers of cows in the village in the 1930s. Most hadjust a few and would combine farming with another job. After early morning milking, often outin the field and in all weathers, they would go off to work, maybe at a quarry, Friden brickworksor a larger farm. The biggest farms in Elton, over 150 acres, were Elton House (PickfordBrothers) and Oddo House (Frederick Pickford). In Gratton parish the biggest farms wereLowfields (Bernard Kenworthy) and Dale End (Benjamin Yates).

Small farmers could take their churns of milk to Gratton Cheese Factory after it opened in 1884.In the 1920s they could take them to Harold Rolley's dairy, which was in a building blockinghalf the road outside Elton Old Hall. Here the milk was cooled and taken to Rowsley railwaystation (in Harry Rolley's lorry – try saying that aloud!) for transport to Manchester or London.After 1933, when the Milk Marketing Board was established, milk churns were collecteddirectly from the farms by the MMB lorry and taken to the new Express Dairies creamery atRowsley station. Mr Rolley's dairy became a storage shed and was demolished in 1962.

Elton cricketers enjoyed a successful - if slightly frustrating - 2018 season finishing as runners-up in each of the threecompetitions they contested.

1.Mansfield Sunday League

Elton’s debut season in Sunday League cricket saw them finish in second place behind Selston in their section of theMansfield League. In retrospect, the Elton players will be kicking themselves for being caught napping at Sherwood Collieryin their opening game of the campaign. This avoidable defeat would ultimately prove crucial as Elton lost only one furtherSunday League game throughout the entire season. However, with a year’s experience of the league behind them, thereis no reason why Elton should not go one better in 2019. The final league positions for the 2018 season were:

2. Orme Shield

The 2018 Orme Shield Final played at Bakewell on 20th July saw Elton squaring up to Stanton. The game was noteworthyon two counts. First of all – it was played on a cool wet evening which, given the summer we have just enjoyed, seemsalmost impossible! The game was reduced to 12 eight-ball overs per side as a consequence of the diminishing light.Secondly, the composition of the two teams was markedly different. Elton stuck to their usual policy of fielding home growntalent. No less than nine of the players on show in the final attended Elton School. Their opponents were rather morewidely drawn - including Premier League players from Denby and Spondon towards the south of the county together witha number of excellent cricketers from clubs such as Holmesfield further north. Faced with this array of travelling stars, ourteam was beaten - but far from disgraced. Almost certainly, Elton had faced the strongest batting side to contest an OrmeShield final in recent times. It is worth pointing out too that Elton’s 12 over total of 124 would have beaten most otherteams.

3. Longstone League

On the midweek cricket league scene Great Longstone Cricket Club carried off the winner’s trophy. Once again Elton hadto be content with the runners-up spot but with teams such as Ashford and Matlock also in the league – this was no meanfeat.

Elton Parish Council

Elton Village Hall HeatersI want to write and explain the situation with the heaters in our Village Hall.

Over the past couple of years, the Village Hall Committee has had a growing number ofenquiries and complaints about the heating system not working at certain hours of the day.

The reason for this is due to a restricted/discounted electricity tariff that was agreed severalyears ago. The heaters will not come on between 12pm and 2pm in the winter and 11am and1pm in the summer. There are also some restrictions overnight and during the early hours.

Although this agreement might have saved the Village Hall money, we are finding that anincreasing number of individuals and groups want to use the hall during these restricted hourswhen the heaters will not work. This means the hall is cold and not user friendly.

Jean Carson has done a great deal of work trying to get this matter resolved on behalf of theVillage Hall Committee. Thanks to Jean’s perseverance, we are hopeful that E-On will bechanging the meter early in the new year and the restricted operating hours will be removed.The heaters should, therefore, begin to work at whatever time of day they are needed.

We understand that this means waiting a few more months to fix the problem and we can onlyapologise to our users for the inconvenience this has caused.

Finally, last year we installed new wall mounted quartz heaters in the Village Hall. Theelements in the old heaters were no longer available, so we were left with no choice but toreplace them.

Since the new heaters have been in place, we have been told that they do not give out enoughheat and the red glow is off putting for users. We are, therefore, consulting with a local heatingcompany to come up with the best solution for heating the hall. Hopefully, this problem will alsobe addressed very soon.

We want to thank everybody who continues to support the Village Hall as we continue toimprove it for all our users.

MY TRIBUTE TO JOHN ALASTAIR DAWE

I would like to thank my many friends from Elton and Winster for their kindness and expressionsof sympathy following the passing away of John on the 19th October. I received many messagesand cards with some lovely comments such as he was kind, generous, gentle, mischievous and funto be around, to name just a few. John and I were together in Elton for thirty-one happy years, wemet at a New Year do in Northumberland in 1987 and the rest was history as I moved to be withhim the following June. After living together for ten years we finally married in 1997. I had alreadymet him thirteen years earlier in London at a new year party and saw him many times over thefollowing years at reunions and holidays organised by his university friends, many of whom wereat the funeral. We were to meet up in June this year with the same friends in Northumberland butwe were unable to go because John was too ill to travel.

John supported Leyton Orient and Manchester United football clubs, he loved steam trains, thecountry side especially Robin Hoods Stride and walking down Gatton Dale and gardening whichtook up most of his time at the weekends when he was working in London. He was involved inmaking the first Calor Gas application for Derbyshire village of the year which was quite successful.Over the last two years he was quite ill which meant we had many visits to hospital in Chesterfieldand finally he died in hospital.

I feel the village and his university friends were out in force for his funeral which meant the churchwas full, I’ve had some good feedback regarding the service and for me it was perfect, even Elviswas in the building! I would also like to thank everyone who supported me and his family at theservice and afterwards in the village hall and later in the Duke of York. If anyone would like a copyof the order of service I have a number left to give away.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Pre School Assistant to join oursmall and friendly team of staff.

You will need to have a full and relevant level 2 or 3 qualification in theEarly years and a warm and positive approach with lots of creative ideas.

In order to be considered for the role you will need a passionate andpositive attitude towards working with children and possess excellentcommunication skills. Your role will include promoting positiverelationships with parents, children and colleagues as well as makingsure that all the children’s safety and welfare needs are met.

The post will be for one day a week (Tuesday), 8.45am – 2.45pm. Extrahours maybe available to cover illness and essential training. Startingin January.
