While researching the benefits and conse-quences of shopping locally, I was astoni-shed to find out how much of an impactshopping locally can have on our local eco-nomy.

Local First. Sounds simple enough. Shouldbe easy. I can do that. However, when I goto the doctor in Ottawa, while I'm there I'lljust stop by the shopping centre and pick upa few things so I don't have to stop when Iget back. Oh, and I should stop at the Hard-ware store and see what they have for floo-ring so I can get started on the renovationsin the basement. And maybe I should stop atthe pharmacy for that prescription in mywallet, by then I'll need lunch. And so it spirals ... Why not wait till I get back home, and spend my money where it will benefitmy community?

Are we saying don't ever shop out of town? No, but we are saying look at local busi-nesses first. If the quality of the product andthe quality of service is what you want, itonly makes sense to shop at home. Everydollar spent in town will be re-spent seventimes before it leaves your community. Ifwe all shop local first, the spiral will be up-ward not downward, and we will all benefit. We want and need our neighbouring busi-ness to succeed; if they succeed, we suc-ceed. Any and all new businesses should bewelcomed with open arms. They will bringemployees and customers to shop at yourbusiness.

This Classified, Buy & Sell paper is one ofthe media dedicated to advertise local busi-nesses throughout the “St. Lawrence Sea-way” region. Take time to look at what theyhave to offer, they are YOUR local eco-nomy, they are YOUR neigbours!

10 Reasons to shop locally1-Significantly More Money Re-circulates.

When you purchase at locally owned busi-

nesses rather than nationally owned, more

money is kept in the community because lo-

cally-owned businesses often purchase from

ON THE MARKET by Sylvie Legault

other local businesses, service providers and

farms. Purchasing local helps grow other bu-

sinesses as well.

2-Non Profits Receive Greater Support.

Local business owners donate more to local

charities than non-local owners.

3-Unique Businesses Create Character &

Prosperity

The unique character of your community is

what brought you there and keeps you there.

Our tourism businesses also benefit.

4-Environmental Impact Is Reduced.

Local businesses make more local purchases

requiring less transportation and usually set up

shop in town centers rather than on the fringe.

This generally means contributing less to

sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.

5-Most New Jobs Are Provided By

Local Businesses.

Small local businesses are the largest em-

ployers nationally.

6-Customer Service Is Better.

Local businesses often hire people with more

specific product expertise for better customer

service.

7-Local Business Owners Invest In

Community.

Local businesses are owned by people who

live in this community, are less likely to leave,

and are more invested in the community’s fu-

ture.

8-Public Benefits Far Outweigh Public Costs.

Local businesses require comparatively little

infrastructure and more efficiently utilize pu-

blic services relative to chain stores.

9-Competition And Diversity Leads To More

Consumer Choices.

A marketplace of thousands of small busi-

nesses is the best way to ensure innovation

and low prices over the long-term.

10-Investment In Your Community is

Encouraged.

A growing body of economic research shows

that in an increasingly homogenized world,

entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more li-

kely to invest and settle in communities that

preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and

distinctive character.

DID YOU KNOW...Not many people know that the car-making company Lamborghini started out as a tractor-manufacturing company.

The reason for the shift from farm vehicles to super cars would be because of a feud against Enzo Ferrari—who obviously owns

the Italian high-end sports car manufacturing company Ferrari.

Ferrucio Lamborghini was a simple man born into a family who farmed grapes for a living. His mechanical knowledge and inte-

rest eventually lead him to enter the business of making tractors. His tractor manufacturing became very popular and lucrative - And

so he buys a Ferrari. After owning it for some time, he then noticed that it had an inferior clutch that would always break. He brings

up the complaint all the way to the owner, Enzo Ferrari, and argued to him that his tractors had better clutches than Ferrari cars. Pride-

filled Enzo Ferrari shrugged off his complaint thinking that a mere farmer had nothing against the prestige and pedigree of his

Ferrari cars... This is what pushed Ferrucio Lamborghini into the business of automobiles!

HERE’S MY CARD - Pet Professionals

Helpful Tips to 'WINTERIZE' Your Pets!More pets are lost during the dark, winter

months than any other time of year. Out in

the cold and blowing wind, a pet can lose

their way as their scenting ability may be

negatively affected. If your dog or cat does-

n't already wear a reflective collar with id

tags, now's the time to put one on her.

Whether lost or on a daily walk, the collar

will help her be seen by passing motorists

and id tags will help her be brought home.

Lakes and ponds as well as moving water-

ways also pose an increased risk. When cov-

ered in snow, some don't completely freeze

making them dangerous places for a pet who

doesn't know any better than to stay away.

Keep your pet on a leash, or stick to routine,

solid ground pathways and areas you and

your pet are well-used to. Keep pet's nails

well-trimmed as longer nails don't allow for

good grip and footing in icy conditions.

We've all experienced how dehydrating win-

ter can be. Outdoor bowls will need to be

freshly refilled several times a day during

freezing temperatures as he'll be drinking

more often to keep hydrated. If bowls are

metal, they should be exchanged for un-

breakable Pyrex glass or plastic that won't

crack, so tongues won't get nastily stuck to

the metal. The more time your pet spends in

outside temperatures, the more food he'll

need to keep warm.

A pet left in a car, (which virtually turns into

a freezer while parked) when you go shop-

ping or holiday visiting can just as easily

freeze to death in the winter as he can die

from heat prostration in a hot car in summer.

Leave your pet safely at home!

Many cats and other critters cannot resist

crawling up under the hood of your car seek-

ing warmth and shelter. Before you start your

car, get into the habit of 'hood banging', call-

ing out, or even a quick honk of your horn.

Make enough noise and give an extra minute

or so to alert any cat that's crawled up inside

your engine. This will give them time to es-

cape and save you from the horrific conse-

quences of an animal being caught in the

brutal machinery of your car.

PET LOVERS by Aileen W. Donovan

All pets, including birds, bunnies and reptiles

need warmth and a draft-free zone for com-

fort in winter. If you have their cages next to

a window, make sure there isn't a draft, or

move them to a warmer spot for the winter

months.

Reptile custodians will need to be extra-vig-

ilant in keeping habitats at the correct, warm

temperature with minimal fluctuation. Re-

member your reptile relies on its environment

to keep its body at the correct temperature.

Keep all heating lamps, ceramic heating ele-

ments, etc..away from direct body-contact

with your pet to avoid accidental burns. Have

battery or other alternative heating sources on

hand in case of power failures. It's a good

idea to keep a thermometer both on the inside

and outside of your reptiles cage to monitor

temperature.

Warmth and hydration are the two main con-

cerns in keeping your birds winter safe and

comfy. Speak to your breeder about the safest

products to use in keeping your bird warm.

Be extremely careful when using space-

heaters, kerosene, wood stoves, gas fireplaces

or any other heaters that do not vent to the

outdoors, as these can prove fatal. If you like

a roaring fireplace in winter, make sure your

bird is safe elsewhere, behind closed doors to

avoid deadly fumes. Radiator-style electric

heaters without exposed heating elements

and that do not have polytetrafluroethylene

(PTFE) coatings appear to be the safest. Ad-

ditionally, watch for over-heating! If you see

your bird panting, extending his wings or

neck he is over-heated!

Keep him hydrated with a bird mister, and

allow him to bathe on a regular basis. Keep

your home's humidity level at a comfortable

level. If you are feeling the dry air, you can

be sure your bird is also. Hanging your laun-

dry inside to dry is an easy, old-fashioned

way of naturally increasing moisture in the

air.

Asking your breeder, or reading your species-

appropriate care manual, is the best way to

keep your pet healthy and happy through all

seasons.

As we move into the season where

darkness comes early and daylight

comes late, our physical bodies

may respond negatively with

S.A.D. (seasonal affective disor-

der) or winter depression.

The Angels are here to help guide

us through this. They say, 'When

there is darkness, BE the Light!

Your thoughts create your expe-

riences so when it is easier to fall

prey to the cold, darkness of win-

ter, it is important make a concer-

ted effort to keep your thoughts

elevated and always, always

Light-filled...You can increase

your Inner-Light significantly by:

Beginning your day by counting

your blessings. Be grateful for

your body that is alive today with

your earthly experience. Be grate-

ful for your working mind which

has a banquet of options to choose

from to create a meaningful day.

Be grateful for your loved ones,

your job, your warm home, even

your bills as they are symbols that

someone trusts you and believes in

your ability to pay them! After you

fill your mind with gratitude, fill

your heart with joy!

SPIRITUAL by Aileen W. Donovan

Your Angel MessageWhen There is Darkness,

BE The Light!

Take time in your day to play! To

laugh! Watch a funny movie. Sing

a silly song. Watch your pet, or

child at play. They are great tea-

chers of how to revel in unbridled

joy! Choose to feel happy! Release

your worries! There is nothing so

serious in life, no illness, no debt,

no regret, no worry that was ever

made better by stewing in it. Relax

and rejoice!

There is nothing so grievous in

life, that you cannot make better

by pouring Light on it. Give it to

God and ask Him to show you the

lesson, then open to receive the

knowledge and the way back into

joy.

Each and every Soul has the capa-

city to be a Light-house in dark-

ness, not only for yourself, but for

all around you. It is your assi-

gnment as well as your destiny to

shine your Light exactly where

you are, as brilliantly and as

brightly as you can. When you do

your part, the Universe will imme-

diately respond, presenting you

with even more opportunities for

happiness, joy and Light.
