CAPE CHARLES At the southern tip of the peninsula the Cinderella town continues its amazing transformation, recapturing its 1886 glory days when the railroad gave birth to this Victorian beauty. B&Bs, a boutique hotel and cottage/resort rentals make staying here a pleasure along with the downtown shopping. Full service European day spa and nearby guided horseback trail rides on a waterfront estate add to the offerings. Eateries include a posh waterfront restaurant, casually chic coffee house, Irish pub, bistro, and old fashioned soda fountain. Cape Charles Museum provides a fascinating look back. The Art Deco Palace Theater spotlights local, regional and national talent. Bay Creek Resort and Club’s upscale marina with shops and restaurant fl ank the northern side of town. On the southern side its two nationally ranked golf courses designed by golf legends Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer intersect along stunning water vistas. Resort rentals are also available. Get on track with the vintage Bay Creek Railway dining excursions. Sunsets are serene on the town’s quiet mile-long beach, catch a sail or fi sh the pier.
EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE Out the Welcome Center’s back door fi nd the Shore’s pristine backyard. Stretch your legs on the butterfl y trail, take in the nature museum, bird watching, kayak launch, and seaside vistas atop an old WWII bunker.
KIPTOPEKE STATE PARK Near the cape is a bay beach escape, wild-style. Camp in beautiful cabins, hike, bike, go boating, fi sh the pier, or recline on sandy beaches.

Wild Island Ponies
RENEGADES FOR CENTURIES, THE SIGHT OF WILD HORSES running along the shores of Assateague Island have become romantic symbols of freedom, speaking to our innate longing to escape life’s “fences.” With unbridled anticipation visitors to neighboring ChincoteagueIsland seek out the wild ponies roaming Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Sturdy but small horses, their size is the reason for the affable “pony” moniker. Legend claims the ponies are descendents of wild mustangs who swam to shore after a Spanish galleon sunk off the coast. The less imaginative say their origin is traced back to the 1600s when early island settlers turned their herds loose to graze on the island tax-free. Either way, the Chincoteague Ponies have earned their island home and the affection of millions worldwide. Cared for by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, the ponies are permitted to graze on the refuge. But to protect the sensitive eco-system the herd can not exceed 150 horses.
PONY POWER To trim the herd’s numbers and provide a source of revenue for the fi re company on the last Wednesday before the last Thursday in July the island shifts into pony power with its annual Pony Penning and Auction. Run by the island’s version of their Wild West counterpoints, the Chincoteague “Saltwater Cowboys” round up the herd. On a “slack tide” they swim across the channel and into the quaint downtown of Chincoteague to the delight of thousands of onlookers. The foals are auctioned to fi ll the “I wanna pony” dream of kids of all ages.
This 80-plus year celebration never fails to make international headlines but the pony mystique can be relished year round. Discover the horses while hiking, biking, or on a bus tour of the wildlife refuge with the Chincoteague National History Association. 757-336-3696, www.assateague.org/plover. Island captains also offer boat tours to view the ponies.
MISTY MAGIC Who made Pony Penning the splash heard round the world? Author Marguerite Henry who penned her beloved 1947 children’s classic Misty of Chincoteague. It later made it to the big screen fi lmed here using many islanders. On the Misty “trail” visit Miss Molly’s Inn, Main Street where Henry dreamed up the pony story, and the Island Roxy where the real Misty once strolled the aisles. Her hoof prints are memorialized under the old movie house marquee. You can also see where Misty once frolicked, the Beebe Ranch, now turned mini museum at 3062 Ridge Road. Misty and her foal Stormy, who later got her own story book, are preserved there and can be viewed during select summer hours. Call 757-599-6069. Fitting too is the beautiful bronzed statue at the town’s Waterfront Park commemorating the pony who put this delightful island on the map.

TANGIER ISLAND ESPN found one of the last watermen’s outposts a perfect spot to fi lm commercials as unique as the tiny Chesapeake isle. From Onancock sail back in time where islanders speak in an endearing sing-song Elizabethan twang. Visitors can enjoy the fresh bounty at several of the island’s home-style restaurants. Rent bikes or Tangier taxis—golf carts—to cruise the car-less isle.
The new Tangier History Museum & Interpretive Cultural Center and self-guided history walk give insight to the island’s enduring heritage. Pristine sandy beaches are excellent for relaxing. Take a Waterman’s Tour with a Tangier captain and discover the island’s legendary soft-shell crab “farms” (Contact Chesapeake House 757-891-2331). Free kayak rentals and mapped water trails bring you to secluded vistas. Come twilight rock on the porch of the Bay View Inn and listen to the creatures of the marsh softly serenade the island. tangierhistorymuseum.org

ONANCOCK Voted COOLEST SMALL TOWN in America by Budget Travel Magazine, it’s also known for welcoming guests and their pets with “Yappy Hour” and other pet-friendly accommodations. With a petite harbor, this charmer chartered in 1680 displays its esteemed history at Ker Place, a circa 1800 Federal style house museum. The small town sophisticate harbors bistros and an Irish pub. Dinner and a movie take on a delightful twist with the retro movie theater or theatrics at the North Street Playhouse. Enjoy shopping opportunities for art, antiques and garden and home furnishings. The wharf provides a safe harbor for visiting boaters, fi shing charters, kayaking tours, and waterfront dining. A boutique hotel and welcoming B & Bs make extended stays more than tempting. onancock.org

AUNT BEA WOULD APPROVE The Mayberry-like town of Cape Charles is a family friendly destination. Kayak tours can teach your clan how to clam while seeking wildlife on serene waters. Connect with your inner pirate when Tall Ships visit the harbor—ARRR!
“MA, I WANNA PONY!” That request can be met on Chincoteague Island, a place that harkens to the seaside resorts of old where kids, parents and grandparents made memories. The home of wild ponies made famous by the 1947 book Misty of Chincoteague still captivates children today. No need to wait for the legendary Pony Swim, scope out the ponies year round on the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge where the beach is pristine. Other attractions: the 1867 Assateague Lighthouse, Herbert Bateman Center, cozy museums, bike trails, boat tours, miniature golf, the list goes on.
GATHER AROUND THE CAMPFIRE The Shore has a variety of campgrounds tucked along the scenic waters of the bay and sea. Fun in the sun activities range from swimming and fi shing to paddle boats and dolphin cruises. Lodging options include deluxe cabins, RV hook-ups and tent sites. “SPACE ISLAND” IS RESUPPLYING THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION
Rocket launches to rival any 4th of July Fireworks and you can watch with the wild ponies on Assateague Beach or raise a glass of cheer at waterside restaurants, hotels and a bevy of places up and down our coast. The excitement is brought to you by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport—MARS—located at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility. And it’s Orbital Sciences Corp.’s rockets that will be resupplying the International Space Station. Did you know Wallops Flight Facility is where the U.S. Space program began and is the nation’s oldest, most prolifi c rocket launching site? The fi rst research rocket lifted off from the island on July 4, 1945—more than a decade before the creation of NASA. Way back then, the only way onto the island was by ferry. And who put the fi rst female astronaut in orbit? Yep, our Space Island! Miss Sam, a rhesus monkey, paved the way for Astronaut Alan Shepard’s success in the Apollo era. [And no worries—she made it safely back for a happy retirement.] Launch/Space info: marsspaceport.com [See Current Launch Manifest] and www.nasa.gov/wallops.
