The filter does your dirty work, it removes debris as well as most of the microscopic matter that floats around your pool. Keeping your filter maintained and backwashing the pool regularly will help maintain the life of your filter.

Cleaning: If your filter is working and your circulation is good, you might think your pool is staying clean. Unfortunately, most swimming pools have areas with little to no circulation. You may see lines begin to form around the pool at your water level, especially near stairs or

ladders. Brushing is recommended to keep algae from forming and spreading. Once a week, take a dip in your pool with a brush (dish washing brushes work well, just make sure you don’t stick it back in your sink) and scrub the walls as you swim around the edge. Who knew cleaning your pool would involve swimming in it!

Testing: Every pool, just like every person, has different characteristics and levels that need to be adjusted. Just as we get our blood checked, your pool needs to have its levels checked. The most important of these levels are the pH and chlorine. Testers are inexpensive and can be found at your local pool supply stores. Next time you are out in town, stop by and pick one up. Maintaining proper levels in your pool will help maintain the clarity and safety of your water.

The last step in perfect pool maintenance is knowing when and what to use. Applying the right products at the right time is essential in keeping your pool clean and clear. Keeping up with the maintenance will make your pool a safe and inviting place to spend those lazy summer afternoons. Don’t wait until your filter breaks or the water turns green to call a technician.
