PRE-SERVICE MUSIC & WORDS OF WELCOME

OPENING HYMN CW Hymnal #142 Come, You Faithful, Raise the Strain

Please remain seated after the hymn.

P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the

fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you. (spoken) P: Our Savior Jesus Christ commanded baptism when he said: “Go and

make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” All of us are born into this world with a deep need for baptism. From our parents we inherit a sinful nature; we are without true fear of God and true faith in God and are condemned to eternal death. But Jesus took away our sin by giving his life on the cross. At our baptism he clothes us with the robe of his righteousness and gives us a new life. Our sinful nature need not control us any longer.

We recall what baptism means for our daily lives as we speak these words together:

C: Baptism means that the sinful nature in us should be drowned by daily sorrow and repentance, and that all its evil deeds and desires be put to death. It also means that a new person should daily arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever.

Worship Welcome Alleluia! Jesus is risen! He is risen indeed! On Easter the stone was rolled

away to show God’s victory over death. Over the next forty days Jesus appeared to hundreds of people to prove that victory. His Easter victory

rolls away fear of our enemies and fear of punishment for sin.

Order of Worship The Common Service (Christian Worship, p. 15)

Theme: Rolled Away: Easter rolls away fear

Prayer before Worship Risen Savior, as we continue to celebrate your victory over death, keep us mindful of its impact on our eternal future. Our place in heaven is sure and certain. Because of that, we live every day confident of your love and mer-cy. Bless our joyful worship today, Amen.

P: As baptized children of God we confess our sins: C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and

that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his

only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the

name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

P: In obedience to the command of our Lord and trusting in his promise, you have brought this child to be baptized. Jesus told us: “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” It is in baptism that God grants the new life of forgiveness, joy, and peace to little children. By the power of God’s Word, this gracious water of life washes away sin, delivers from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe.

Receive the sign of the cross on the head and heart to mark you as a redeemed child of Christ.

(Baptism of Rosalind Violet Rouse)

The Almighty God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—has forgiven all your sins. By your baptism, you are born again and made a dear child of your Father in heaven. May God strengthen you to live in your baptismal grace all the days of your life. Peace be with you.

Please stand.

EXHORTATION TO PARENTS AND CONGREGATION

P: Brothers and sisters in Christ: Our Lord commands that we teach his precious truths to all who are

baptized. Christian love therefore urges all of us, especially parents and sponsors, to assist in whatever manner possible so that Rosalind may remain a child of God until death. If you are willing to carry out this responsibility, then answer: Yes, as God gives me strength.

C: Yes, as God gives me strength.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN BAPTISM

Page 4: Easter Rolls Away Fear ter - Redeemer Lutheran Church Mandan...Apr 15, 2018  · The Almighty God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—has forgiven all your sins. By your baptism, you

4

P: Let us pray: Merciful Father in heaven, we thank you for the blessing of baptism by

which you offer and grant the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. Help us to regard our baptism as the robe of righteousness we are to wear all the days of our life. Look with special favor on Rosalind and grant her a rich measure of your Spirit that she may grow in faith and godly living. Make us willing to carry out our responsibilities to those who have been baptized, so that all of us may finally come to the blessed joys of heaven, through Jesus our Lord.

C: Amen

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P: We pray: O God, by the humiliation of your Son you lifted up this fallen world from the despair of death. By his resurrection to life, grant your faithful people gladness of heart and the hope of eternal joys; through your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Please be seated.

FIRST LESSON Acts 12:1-19

God delivers Peter from enemies and persecution

It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them.

2 He had James, the brother of John,

put to death with the sword. 3 When he saw that this pleased the Jews, he

proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Feast of Unleavened Bread.

4 After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him

over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.

5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God

for him. 6 The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was

sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance.

7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light

shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.

8 Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter

did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. 9 Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel

was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. 10

They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.

11 Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the

Lord sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were anticipating.”

12 When this had dawned

on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying.

13 Peter knocked at the

outer entrance, and a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer the door. 14

When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”

15 “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was

so, they said, “It must be his angel.” 16

But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished.

17 Peter motioned

with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James and the brothers about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.

18 In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to

what had become of Peter. 19

After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there a while.

PSALM 118 CW Hymnal, p. 108 A song of joy from God’s people

The congregation sings the verses. Children of Little Lambs sing the refrains.

CHILDREN’S ANTHEM Oh, Give Thanks SECOND LESSON 1 John 1:1-2:2

God delivers sinners from sin and darkness

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.

2 The life appeared; we have

seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.

3 We proclaim to you what we have

seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

4 We write this to

make our joy complete.

5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is

light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with

Page 6: Easter Rolls Away Fear ter - Redeemer Lutheran Church Mandan...Apr 15, 2018  · The Almighty God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—has forgiven all your sins. By your baptism, you

6

him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7 But if we

walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in

us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins

and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10

If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

2:1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody

does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not

only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

VERSE OF THE DAY P: Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. Our hearts

were burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us. Alleluia. (Luke 24:32 cf. NIV)

Please stand for the Gospel reading. After the lesson is announced, please sing:

GOSPEL LESSON Luke 24:36-49 Jesus rolls away the disciples’ fears

While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

37 They were startled and frightened,

thinking they saw a ghost. 38

He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?

39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I

myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.

41 And while

they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”

42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish,

43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.

44 He said to them, “This is what

I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”

Page 7: Easter Rolls Away Fear ter - Redeemer Lutheran Church Mandan...Apr 15, 2018  · The Almighty God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—has forgiven all your sins. By your baptism, you

7

45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.

46

He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,

47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be

preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48

You are witnesses of these things.

49 I am going to send you what my Father has

promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

After the Gospel lesson is read, please sing:

CONFESSION OF FAITH (The Apostles’ Creed)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Please be seated.

We currently do not have a leader for this program and need to find one or two people to take this project on. Past coordinator Jessie Wolfe will help and train new leaders but we need to start planning now to be ready for one of our biggest children events of the year. Speak to Pastor Wolfe or Family Ministry Board chair Allen Rudolph today to learn more or to volunteer.
