pakistan to three isolated regions

Page 8: East pakistan crisis

1.GEOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS:

Stretegic implications: These water obsticles split defenders

into isolated pockets & gave advancing enemy columns of secure flanks

The 6000 sq. km deltaic regionalong the coast was impregnable to friends and foes alike

Page 9: East pakistan crisis

Communications: Infrastructure was poor..roads were

narow Only two ports with(IWT)facility I.e.

khulna, chittagong Most of movement (military ,civil)

across the rivers took place on steamers, country boats

Roads linking east pakistan to india were metteled

Page 10: East pakistan crisis

Climate: Hot and humid climate Catches full blast of monsoon Average rainfall of over 2,500 mm Concentrated during april-

place only in winter Thousands perish as a result of

floods every year

Page 11: East pakistan crisis

2.CAUSES OF ALIENATION: Language issue: A mojor issue which aliened the bengalis

from rest of the country was language, national authorities failed to understand deep attacmentof bengalis with their mother language

Language riots results in the death of two students who became martyrs .sheikh mujeeb then a unknown entity take this issue and became a hero.

Page 12: East pakistan crisis

IN MEMORY OF THOSE DIE IN LANGUAGE RIOTS:

Page 13: East pakistan crisis

Culture: Pakistan was a multiracial and poly ethnic

country Bengalis came from different social stock

their dree, diet, social customs differed from the rest

Their love for dance and poetry brought them close to bengali hindus

Zulfiqar ali bhutto was quite concious about this cultural divide he said”unity was not flowing from fountainhead of a single nationality”

Page 14: East pakistan crisis

Behaviour of government officials: Much of what is generally believed about

the arrogance shown by the west pakistani official towards their sub ordinates was true eg. The chief secretary of east bengal while holdind a kutheri sit in mosquito net.

West pakistani troops used to call their fellow soldiers “bengali” instead of their original names ,all such kind of irritants none of them dilebate convey the message of contemptuos attitude of west pakistanis towards bengal

Page 15: East pakistan crisis

3.REGIONAL EQUALITY-REMEDIAL MEASURES:

Language issue resolved: after having queered the pitch, steps

were taken to pacify the emotions Bengali was finally accepted second

language of pakistan in 1956 constitution The bengali script appeared on currency

notes,official documents,postage stamps

Page 16: East pakistan crisis

Political representation remedied: A major cause of alienation of bengalis

from west pakistan was their inability to get what they considered to be their right ful share in political arena

In the first constituent assembly out of 74 members 44 were bengalis.again in 1954 new assembly accorded a greater no. of seats to west pakistan there were 44 members out of 79 seats

As regards the two most important posts of governor general, primme minister was held by bengalis

Page 17: East pakistan crisis

CONCLUSION:

The pain and anguish of Dec 1971 would gradually fade away.but what should always be remembered is that history has a cruel habit of repeating itself if past mistakes were repeated over and over again.

“Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet,Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God's great Judgment Seat; But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth,When two strong men stand face to face,              tho' they come from the ends of the earth! “ -- Rudyard Kipling
