What is Earth Day?Earth Day is a Birthday!! Just like a birthday is a

special day to celebrate a person, Earth Day is a special day that celebrates the Earth. Every year, America and over 100 different countries join together in the celebration of this special day. Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide. On Earth Day, we remember to appreciate nature and learn ways to protect our environment. Find ways that you can help keep the planet clean and help protect our environment!

"We only have one earth, so we have to take care of her."- Senator Gaylord Nelson

When and why did Earth Day begin? People were starting to worry about air and water pollution and

gather the energy of Americans Twenty million people gathered that first Earth Day all across

America and since then more than 500 million people in over 180 countries have participated

April 22, 1970 in San Francisco, California Earth Day was born

REUSE : Try not to buy a new product. Try and use the one you already have. Try a Yard sale, Goodwill or Play it Again Sports

REDUCE : Only take the amount you will use. Try to use what you have so you don’t have trash to get rid of later.

RECYCLE : Use products that can be reused. Place recyclables in the recycling bin.

Getting the Word OutWhat I’m going to do AND what you can do to be involved!

I will volunteer this year at the GOC (Gwinnett Online Campus) I will host an event at Panera to give away coffee grounds You can host LITTERLESS LUNCHES : Hold a contest to see which

student makes the least amount of garbage at lunchtime during Earth Month. You can host a SCHOOLYARD or NEIGHBORHOOD cleanup :

Remove garbage from nature sites to protect your school’s & community’s wildlife and to make the place visually appealing.

You can Coordinate A “Lights Off!” Campaign: Turn off the lights in all of the classrooms for two or three hours per day during Earth Month.

You can organize a Walk to School Week: Organize “Walking Wednesdays” or “Physical Fridays”, which encourages taking active transportation to and from school.

You can Tote-Your-Own-Trash Day: Tote your trash around with you for a week to get an idea of how much garbage you throw out! At the end of the week, you can develop your own personal action plan with goals to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Have a Swap Event: Students can bring in their old toys, video games, and books to swap.
