The National Curriculum KS2 History Programme of Study 2013 identifies four civilizations to be explored in overview with one also being studied in depth:

the achievements of the earliest civilizations – an overview of where and when the first civilizations appeared and a depth study of one of the following: Ancient Sumer; The Indus Valley; Ancient Egypt; The Shang Dynasty of Ancient China.

This resource aims to help you deliver the overview aspect of this requirement. For the depth study, more detailed resources are likely to be developed in relation to Ancient Sumer, the Indus Valley and the Shang Dynasty in the near future. At present, Ancient Egypt is probably the best resourced area so studying that in depth is probably wise, but as we suggest perhaps as a result of this enquiry, pupils will think one of the other civilizations would be a more interesting study to pursue further.
