EMC NEWS! January 2017

This edition of EMC News is packed full of exciting and interesting stories and we

hope you will enjoy reading them.

With Spring almost upon us, the College is in full preparations for the upcoming

examination season. Year 11 and Sixth Form students are on their final

countdown to taking their qualification examinations, which seem to start slightly

earlier each year. Likewise, our younger students are engaged in their own

assessments in order that they build a strong foundation in readiness for their

own ‘big moment’ when their turn comes around in the not too distant future!

We are pleased that EMC students are showing their “can-do attitude” and are

taking a real pride in their learning, attendance and behaviour. Indeed, we are

pleased to see that attendance rose sharply in January. More and more students

realise the need to attend College every single day, come what may, in order to

reach their potential and earn excellent grades and levels. Well done!

The EMC Science Faculty is excited to announce that at the start of the new term there will be a Science Club that will run every Tuesday in F15 (Mr. O’Connell’s room). The club will give you the opportunity to take part in some amazing experiments and projects that are guaranteed to be exciting and interesting – our first projects will include making some totally gross gooey slime; creating secret messages; writing with fire; making a bottle rocket that, with a bit of luck, will soar over the EMC playing fields and designing a hot air balloon that may be able to carry a message far away. The club is limited to 20 members at any one time, so will operate on a strictly first come first served basis. So, if you would like to join up, ask your Science teacher for a letter and return it as soon as possible, then come 2017 let the experiments begin!

Let the experiments begin!

Learning Mentors to help with

your Maths Homework!

Students were stunned to find that they could use the Library after school to do their MyMaths homework and clear any backlog they have with the two Learning Mentors to help out if they got stuck! Six students in the first session appreciated the help offered from these two experts and also enjoyed the opportunity to change Mr. Bryce’s choice of music after every piece of homework was completed. A relaxed atmosphere helped, and we also discovered that some students struggled to do their homework at home due to a lack of computer facilities, so found the school laptops a great help. There is an open door policy in the Library every Thursday 3:10 to 4:10 so pop in and do homework before you get home and get distracted. Avoid unnecessary homework related detentions and nagging from your parents or carers!

For those parents who collect by car at the

end of the day, please do not use the

Disabled Parking Bays unless you are

entitled to do so. We have recently had a

couple of visitors to College who have

mobility issues and have been unable to

park in the designated spaces. Thank you.

What’s happening in Music @ EMC?

Singing in Leominster On the weekend of 26th and 27th November, a number of students from EMC Choir took part in performances in Leominster. On Saturday 26th November, a small number of students from EMC Choir represented Earl Mortimer College in the Priory Carol Service. Attended by well over 600 people, it was a nerve-wracking performance for the small group of 16 students who did a tremendous job of performing ‘Carol of the Bells’. A big well done and thank you to Rhiannon Turton, Rebecca Hoskins, Meg Mitchel, Alice Pugh, Kira Griffiths, Caera Jones, Patricja Peryt, Rilie Spencer, Hannah Smith, Nikita Howells, Nikola Kusiak, Sophie Poyner, Jessica Davies, Lily Burke and Katie Mitchell for their wonderful performance. On Sunday 27th November, members of EMC Choir joined Mrs De-Sondberg in performing Christmas Pop Songs and Carols in Leominster Corn Square as part of ‘Winterfest’. Students took to the stage in the freezing cold at 2pm and gradually built up their confidence in front of a large crowd to perform very well indeed. Thank you to Danielle Carpenter, Angel Rowan, Nadia Grisoni, Skye McIlroy, Jennie Norman, Thea Oughton, Mary Hodges, Beth Austin, Courtney Pritchard, Alice Pugh, Chloe Turton, Candeese Taylor, Rafie Kutya, Bethany Rooke, Shannon Ballinger and Isabel Morgan for giving up their time on a cold weekend to perform. Well done! Finally, Chloe Higgs (Year 10) was asked to fill a 30 second performance set and she did a fantastic job doing so! Singing ‘Hold Back The River’, ‘Yours’, ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’, ‘Mercy’, ‘Quickstand’ and ending with crowd pleaser, ‘Let It Go’, Chloe did a phenomenal job in entertaining the crowds. A number of members of the public were amazed at her incredible voice at such a young age. Well done Chloe. Mrs De-Sondberg would like to say a huge thank you to all members of choir who gave up their time on this cold a frosty weekend to take part in some brilliant performances. Well done to all!

Sixth Form News

Miss Babington has recently had 8 inches of her haircut for the local charity Little Princess Trust. The charity specialises in making wigs for children who suffer from hair loss, a fantastic charity that was founded in Hereford.

Miss Babington was streamed live on Facebook while her hair was being cut on the 8th December 2016 where an incredible 1,800 people have watched the video. The hair was put into small ponytails, it was cut and plaited as preparation to be sent to the charity. Although it looks like a lot of hair, Miss Babington's contribution will have to be added to more hair to make a full wig for a child in need.

As well as donating her hair, Miss Babington managed to raise an incredible £270 pounds to be fully donated to the charity.

Year 10’s and their

‘Around the World

Challenge!’

Dear Parents/Carers

This year, 10CSS have decided to

raise money for the local

Macmillan Cancer Support

Group. To do this, we will be

completing the ‘Around the

World Challenge’, where you

run, cycle, row or walk 24,000

miles,(the equivalent to the

length of the equator), as well as

holding coffee mornings, cake

stalls and also selling Macmillan

badges and wrist bands at tutor

time. 100% of our funds will go

to Macmillan Support Group.

However, we can’t do it by

ourselves. We will need all the

help we can get, whether it be

through sponsorship for our

challenge or simply buying a

cake from our stall. All support

will be greatly appreciated.

EMC Sports Specialism – Inside Sport

U12 & U14 Girls just miss out on Regional Futsal Finals!

After training almost every week since September. The U12 Girls Futsal team narrowly missed out on

representing both EMC and Herefordshire in the Regional Futsal Finals.

Thursday 19th January was the day the team had been training for. The County Futsal Finals, which were held

at Whitecross High School, Hereford. Just 3 schools stood between them and the Regional finals.

EMC played against Hereford Academy and St Marys High School, finishing both games 1-1. Lacey Jones

scoring the goals in both games. Finally, EMC played against hosts, Whitecross. EMC started on the back foot,

going 1-0 down very early on, but as the game went on, EMC got stronger and stronger. Talia Hill scored,

getting us back into the game. 1 minute left and it looked to be another draw, but unfortunately for us,

Whitecross grabbed a last minute winner, sending them through to the Regional Finals.

EMC U12 Futsal Team – Jaya Tiller, Katie Mitchell, Kira Griffiths, Bryony Jones, Paige Jordan, Lacey Jones, Lily

Burke, Talia Hill and Nikola Kusiak.

The U14 Girls Futsal Team played their tournament on Thursday 26th January and like the U12 Team, the girls

had trained weekly from the start of the term in September. The majority of the team are in fact U13

students playing a year up, so they really had a challenge. First match of the tournament saw EMC face

Hereford Academy, and thanks to a late goal from captain, Chloe Davies, EMC grabbed a 1-0 win. Next were

favourites, Whitecross. EMC fought well but couldn’t keep them out. Whitecross won 2-0. Finally EMC played

St Marys and lost 4-0.

EMC U14 Futsal Team – Leah Garrod, Jasmin Price, Ruby Barrington, Chloe Davies, Macy Chapman, Sophie

Price, Yazmin Kinsey and Shannon Betambeau.

EMC would like to congratulate the winners of both tournaments and we look forward to playing in next

year’s tournaments.

Well done girls!
