Tho train Is niado up of throo kinds ofpassenger carriages, besido freight andbaggogo cara Tho first-clas- s passengercarriages, though of tho shopo describedabove, and with doors and windows intho sides only, aro hotter built than thoothors, and aro all arrangod so as to turnInto slooplng-car- s at night Thoy aro cush-ioned with Teathor-covore- d cushions, butdo not usually have spring scats.

Tho scoond olass carriages havo nocushions simply board soats. Sholvcsnro made to ralso up, llko tho sholros of apantry, thrco on each sldo, ono abovoanother, so that six passengers can Hodown comfortably, If thoy hdvo broughtalong tbolr own mattrossos and pillows,In each compartment. Tho third class carriages aro, many of thoin, all in ono compartmont, with fixed woodon bonches, aud with nogloss windows at tho sldos-slm- ply roughVenetians to slidu up uud down: nothingto keep out dust, and no doubio root.Tho llrst and socond'dass carriages havodoubio roofs and both glass and enctianwindows to protoot passongors from sun.Btroko on tho jouruoy,

Tho old saying on tho coutlnont usedto bo that "only lords. Amoricans andfools travol flrat-closs- . " Horo the higherEnglish ofllcors nro obliged to travol Orst-cla-

our irixu itiThe sweeping charge of want of in

telligence made against the taxpayersin yesterday's Advertiser, is as eminently out of place as the presentAdministration is in presuming to represent the cause of the people. A lack ofintelligence in the common people, whofoolishly pay the expenses of a dis-

honest Government, is not alwaysclearly proved when it is shownvthatthe people are long suffering. Themost essential things "to a healthypublic opinion" would be examples ofprobity and frugality set by those inpower. When you strike a man orsteal a nation's sustenance, it is indeed"needless to inquire" into the outcryraised against the oppressor. Thepresent opposition to the Governmentdoes not spring from the personal in-

fluence of a few men who have beenallowed at times to turn the grindstonefor the present Administration.

It is, alas 1 too true, that the tax-

payers do not need any "apology forthe Ministry, individually or collec-

tively" no apology, sufficient to theevil thereof, could be made. In thepresent case all men in Hawaii arepolitically equal before the law, andthose who claim to be "superior" tothe tax-paye- are only distinguishedfrom them by the trappings of aneffete royalty. In this instance at lcajstthe "clinking of the guinea" will notstraighten the foreheads of fools, simplybecause the public treasury is empty. The great majority of thewho hurl just curses against the presentAdministration do not "stand ready"to become the allies and tools of thepresent Administration. Such an in-

sinuation is conceived in political weak-

ness and brought forth by political hate.It is worthy of Utah and applicable toHawaii. The King is not responsible;poor ruler, he is not to blame he hasbeen hoodwinked with political fancyand foreign roguery. Alas, the peoplesuffer J

We only speak for the peoplewho pay the bulk of the taxes andwho make up the bulk of the presentintelligent opposition to the Govern-

ment party of political tricksters. Ifpolitical cliques, which preceeded thepresent worthless and faithless

set the precedent, which is

liow so aptly followed, we say, not only

expose them for an example, but lettluit actions be pilloried, together with

those of our incumbent public plun-

derers, befdrc an intelligent and healthypublic opinion. We say it boldy for

the who intend, in the endt

to have good government in this King-

dom, that if there is anything thatmilitates against any man or clique ofmen, who are connected with anycombination of interests, which is

naturally arrayed against the presentGovernment, it ii not only the privilegebut the duty of the Advertiser to placethe record before the so

that they can protect themselvesagainst a repetition of the present Ad-

ministration.Neither have we any "desire

to recall the misdoings ot past Ad-

ministrations," unless we do so to holdthem upas public examples to the fu-

ture, as we do rn the prrscnt Ad-

ministration. If, however, the Advet-Use- r

does not give its threatened rev-

elation newspaper publication, for thegeneral public good, and especially forthe purification, which it alleges is

needed, of the Opposition, the Govern-ment organ will stand convicted of"cant and hypocrisy." The organ ismaking a fatal mistake if it supposesthat the Press will uphold any per-

sons as the Advertiser docs in uphold-ing the present Administration whohave been convicted upon reliableevidence of political piracy and official

The hopes of the people were at onetime raised by the argument that theGovernment would repair the roads, inoraer to secure votes at tne comingelection; but it now transpires that theGovernment, after tearful considerationof the public convenience, has decidedto soak the streets with water and thenatives with gin. The survival of thefittest doesn't seem to apply to thematerial and political advancement ofHawaii.

It makes no difference to the tax-

payers of Hawaii whether this or thatsociety or this or that Governmentindorses the Polynesian policy of thepresent Administration; the people whohave the misfortune to live here andsu pport our monarchial circus are forcedto laugh even while they condemn. TheAmerican Board of Missions indorses, from a religious standpoint, a political

thousand-nin- es

away. The missionaries of Hawaii donot indorse the present Administration, and that is the main thing. By theway, the alleged indorsement of the"Polynesian Policy" is based upon acommittee report which contained aprivate indorsement of General SamuelC. Armstrong, as chairman of the com-

mittee, nothing more. The AmericanBoard of Missions has not made anysuch indorsement, and as a Board doesnot indorse political ) affairs. Purtherthan this the missionaries, both hereand in the groups, beyond, havealways been in favor of native inde-pendence in all the Islands. This is anentirely different thing, however, fromindorsing the "Polynesian Policy" ofHawaii.

DESIRABILITY OF UNITY,

Catholic WtrUA

The desire for unity is undoubtedlygood. The desire for union as a step tounity is 00m rational and good. Hewho yearns for unity is a man of peace;he who loves unity above all things, quickened by the grace of Christ, is aChristian and a man of God.Let the men who took part in the Con-gress of Churches, and those who sym-pathize with them and there are manymore of these than they are aware ofthink of this and stand unflinchinelvfirm upon-th- e certain, good ground oftheirs and not yield until in our genera-tion their hopes are in the way of realization.

THE TEMPERANCE QUESTION.

WHAT JUDAISM NEEDS,

lliirtw Qturvw,

We must have another band of Maccabees to rekindle the fervid light ofJudaism in those shrines where it hasbeen asphyxiated by the dense vaporsof materialism and unbelief, ' Theymust reassert the Jewish spirit andlead it to victory against a host of ene-mies even as mighty as those of Anti-ochu- s

of old. Such a victory will be abloodless one. It will be a triumph ofintelligence, truth and laith over ignorance, vice and falsehood, and the house

TIMELY ADVICE.Examiner

When ministers of the gospel arccharged with such crimes as forgeryand adultery, and they are on trial inthe courts or in their own denomina-tion, they should take no part in thepublic worship of God during the investigation. It is a great mistake forsuch men to suppose they arc provingtheir innocence by going straight on..,K .I.a. ..!!. .lull. 'TM..... ... !..nun iuv.il ijuiijil uunub. iiiuy uic, in

fact, giving intensity to the scandals ofwhich they arc the center, and awaken-ing the suspicion everywhere that theyarc using brazcnfaccdncss as a meansto hide their utiilt. A sensitive and innocent man would feel so crushed bythe endrmity of the wrongs with whichhis name is identified as to wait in silence lor God and his own characterto vindicate him. The course taken bythe Bowdoin-squar- e pastor of Bostonis a reproach on all the proprieties thatshould influence a Christian minister.

THE REVISED VERSION.

Quarterly fiaitu. In these days people cannot be re-

minded too strongly and too frequentlythat'thcrc is a vast difference betweenwhat the Old Testament writers actu-ally wrote and what according to prin-ciples of modern grammar they oughtto have written. The Massorah givesus evidence as to what was originallywritten. Why then did not the revisersgive us more of it ? Why did they, instead 01 editing the text that lay beforethem, bewilder us with their own con- -

cctures their own alternative renderings their own variants abitrarily extracted irom inaccurate ana corruptedversions? "Their own" conjecturesand readings we called them; but indeed they are nothing of the sort. Theyare borrowed from other sources. Ourcomplaint (to state the case plainly) isthat the revisers have not had the courage to declare their opinions in plainblack and white; yet are thescjevidentenough to those who can read betweenthe lines.

The Latest American Invention.

THE VICTORY OF ELECTRICITY.Since Electricity has been applied for light-

ing purposes, all efforts of inventors havebeen directed to construct a lamp for generaldomestic use. The reason why this problemhas till now not been solved, is that none ofthe inventors could rid themselves of the Ideaof gas lighting, and that all have adhered tothe system of producing the Electricity insome central plapc, or bylatge machinery, in-

stead of first laying down the principle that aLamp which should ever become generallyuseful and popular, must be portable, like anOil Lamp, and contain the generator of Elec-tricity in itself, I. c., in the foot of the Lamp.

The Norman Electric Light Company hasat last succeeded in completely realizing thisideal of Electric Lighting, and there is nodoubt that this most important invention willbring about a complete revolution In allbranches of lichting.

Our Electric Lamp needs neither Machin-ery, Conductors, nor any expensive outlay, and is neither complicated nor disagreeable inmanipulation ; all that is necessary is to refillIt every four or five days with acid. The costof lighting will be as cheap as gas (( centsper hour), and it has before the latter the im-

mense advantage of neither producing heat, smoke nor carbonic acid, owing to which theair is not impured, and remains at the samedegree of temperature. It is further abso-lutely inodorous, and does not need to bekindled by match, or otherwise, but simplyby turning the key, thus avoiding all dangerof fire, explosion or suffocation, as in the caseof gas, if the key is left open ; and it must beconceded that this advantage alone is invalu-able. It is further preferable to any knownkind of lighting for the following reasons :

(1.) Its manipulation is so simple that anychild can keen it in order.

(2.) That the Lamp is portable, and can beremoved like any Oil Lamp, from one placeto another.

(3.) That it neither requires the disagree- -auic nxing ui uie wick, or wic cleaning 01 mecylinder, as in the case of Oil Lamps.

(4.) That the light produced is a soft andmost steady one ; that It never flickers, andthe flame, though being equal in power oflighting to gas, can be regulated to any de-

gree.(5.) That every danger of fire is absolutely

excluded, as the light will extinguish immedi-ately, if by any accident the glass surroundingthe burner should be broken.

(6.) That it will burn, even in the strongestwind, completely unaffected, thus being

illuminations, lighting of gardens,corridors', etc.

This Lamp is constructed for the present intnrce dillercnt sizes :
