Dust Collection in Technical Orthopaedic Workshops

Requirements for collecting dust in the airDust arises in the orthopaedic workshop during the milling and sanding of various materials, such as plastics, wood, fibre glass and carbon fibre materials.

Scientific studies on the one hand and a high environmental awareness on the other have led to ever more discoveries about the health risks of dust arising from wood and plastics.

If unhealthy levels or concentrations of dust arising at the workplace cannot be avoided, it must be collected at the point where it is created and removed.

Occupational safetyAs well as the content of hazardous substances in the dust, the size of the dust particles is the decisive parameter from a health perspective. Particles with a diameter greater than 10 µm, known as coarse dust, are generally trapped by the nose hairs or the mucous membrane in the nose and throat region.

Smaller and smallest dust particles of less than 10 µm (fine dust, ultra-fine particles) can advance via the windpipe and the bronchial tubes deep into the lungs. For this reason, fine dust is also described as inhalable or respir-able (alveolar) fine dust.

With the increased use of milling and grinding machines, the collection of wood and synthetic material dust and chips is becoming more and more important. Large-scale dust collectors in machine rooms or central dust collectors in separate rooms offer optimum protection for prosthetists/orthotists.

• Room concept and furnishing suggestion for machine room – wood/plastics – with central dust collection system for two machines.

Regulatory requirementsThe occupational exposure limit value (OEL) is the time-weighted average concentration of a substance in the air at the workplace, for which acute or chronic damage to the workers' health is not expected. The occupational exposure limit value (OEL) is given in mg/m³ and ml/m³ (ppm).

The EU occupational exposure limit value (binding limit value – BLV) must be adopted by all Member States of the EU as a minimum standard.

Dust collection systemsIn order to comply with the legally required low residual dust levels at the workplace specified in OEL and BLV, dust collection systems with air recirculation are used. This 100% air recircula-tion and the compliance with the occupational exposure limit values require the installation of appropriate filter systems.

In order to comply with this low residual dust level at the workplace, a dust collector must achieve minimum collection speeds of 20 m/sec, nominal volumetric flows of at least 1,000 m³/ per machine and a residual dust level in the recircu-lated air of 0.2 mg/m³ (H2).

The performance of a dust collector thus depends on the number of machines being operated simultaneously. The Ottobock portfolio includes tested dust collectors that safely achieve a residual dust level of 0.1 mg/m³ (H3) in the recirculated air.

Controlled dust collection systems –“energy saving” using advanced technologyThe Large-capacity Dust Collection Systems SMU 3000, SMU 4500.11 and 6000.1 as well as all central dust collection systems can be additionally provided with a speed control (frequency converter). This advanced and intelligent technology allows adaptation of the collection performance to the corresponding work situation. Due to speed regulation in accordance with the requirements as well as the special construction of the fans, optimal power to capacity of the collection system is achieved. According to our experience a reasonable cut in operating expenses (reduced energy consumption) as well as a considerable reduction of sound emission can be realised in this way.
