grey iron A15 products, for light duty applications. We also operate an audited and accredited ISO9001:2008 Quality Management System to

ensure our products are of the highest quality possible. CE Marked product will be available following the harmonisation and publication of

CLASSIFICATION

BS EN 124 The selection of the appropriate class is the responsibility of the designer. When in doubt the stronger class should be selected.

GROUP CLASS

1 min .Class A15 Areas which can only be used by pedestrians and pedal cyclists.

2 min .Class B125 Footways, pedestrian areas and comparable areas, car parks or car parking areas.

3 min .Class C250For gully tops installed in the area of kerbside channels of roads (fig 1) which when

measured from the kerb edge, extend a maximum of 0.5m into the carriageway and a maximum or 0.2m into the footway.

4 min .Class D400 Carriageway roads (including pedestrian streets), hard shoulders (fig 1 & 2) and park-ing areas for all types of road vehicles.

5 min .Class E600 Areas imposing high wheel loads eg. Docks and aircraft pavements

6 min .Class F900 Area imposing particualry high wheel loads, eg aircraft pavements.

• Double Triangular - Covers comprising of two triangular elements for the purpose of providing stable seating under load and

convenience of lighter weight due to slip cover configuration

• Clear Opening - The nominal unobstructed access opening in a frame, neglecting minor intrusions such as the corner seatings of

some rectangular frames.

• Watertight - Proof against the passage of surface water of a minimal depth and at atmospheric pressure.

• Pressure Tight - Proof against the escape of fluids/gases at a specified pressure.

• Recessed Cover - Cover recessed to accept the insertion of chosen material usually to match the surrounding area.

• Ventilated - Cover and/ or frame provided with opening to allow free circulation of air within the chamber.

• Safety Grid - A fabricated steel grid housed under a cover when installed to hold an accidentally dropped cover.

• Sealing Plate - Galvanised steel or GRP located under the cover to provide additional protection against the sand/silt etc.

• Prising Slot - Recesses to receive a prising bar for the purpose of loosening a cover prior to lifting

• Frame Bearing Area - The surface of the underside of the frame which rests upon the supporting structure.

• Nominal Bearing Pressure - The bearing pressure calculated by dividing the test load (BS EN 124) by the Frame Bearing Area.

• Single Seal - Vertical relationship between a cover edge and frame with the bottom sitting in the seal as shown in detail

• Double seal - Duplicate vertical relationship between a cover edge and frame with the bottom sitting in the seal as shown in detail

• Plain Seated - Not sealed, but jointed contact between a cover edge and frame

• Keyholes - Closed keyholes prevent ingress of water and debris and escape of odours, open keyholes do not.

• Locking - Either screwed down or fitted with a turn buckle system to deter unauthorised lifting.

• Loosely coupled - Two halves of a double triangular cover are loosely coupled to prevent separation when lifting yet allow

permitted deflection under traffic loads.

• Seating - The bearing surface between the cover and frame.

• Waterway - The drainage area of a gully grating in square centimetres.

WHAT IS DUCTILE IRON Ductile iron is not a single material but is part of a group

of materials which can be produced to have a wide range

of properties through control of the microstructure. The

common defining characteristic of this group of materials is

the morphological structure of the graphite. In ductile irons,

the graphite is in the form of spherical nodules rather than

flakes (as in grey iron), thus inhibiting the creation of cracks and

providing the enhanced ductility that gives the alloy its name.

The formation of nodules is achieved by addition of nodulizing

elements, most commonly magnesium.

WHY WE USE DUCTILE IRON

Ductile iron offers superior hardness and durability when

compared to grey iron as well as offering a high strength to

weight ratio allowing producers to manufacture lightweight

castings that can allow for 50% weight saving over traditional

grey iron castings. All of this therefore minimises the risk to the

user as the castings are easier and lighter to handle and with

an ever changing marketplace that specially requires less risk to

the manual user and installer ductile iron is the perfect material

to use. Ductile iron also offers a component that reduces the

possibility of breakages and failure when installed and in transit,

we see these points as key features as it offers the customer a

high quality of material and less risk compared to the use of

other metals.

The ductile iron covers and frames are designed to pass the statutory

highway loading requirements but unlike conventional ductile iron

covers that have a dangerously low skid resistance, the MA surface has

SEALING PLATES AND SAFETY GRIDS

Under surge conditions, pressure concentration in access shafts can lead to covers being forced out of access covers. In situation where this may

occur R&B offers a bolt-down mild steel sealing plate for added security. Mild Steel sealing plates also prevent the egress of odours and gases. Mild

steel sealing plates are secured to the access covers frame using a total of 12 bolts. The inner plate which is seated on a high strength neoprene

rubber seal is then locked to the sub frame with 16 Stainless steel bolts. Our standard sealing plate is produces using 3mm mild steel and can

take pressures of up to 0.5 BAR. Special sealing plates can be produced to take much higher water pressures and also can be coated in chemical

resistant materials for special applications.

SAFETY GRIDS

Specially designed mild steel safety grids depending on the design of the cover rest on the covers internal lip or pockets that are retrofitted to

enable to installation. They prevent the entry of any unwanted objects into the sewer shaft when work is being carried out.

Compass is a range of innovative structural access chambers for underground

installations. Ideal for all ducted network applications where access chambers

are required for inspection and maintenance, Compass is suitable for all

footway and highway projects.

Compass chambers are formed by an interlocking rectangular ring. Available in

sizes ranging from 300 x 300 to 1200 x 1200mm

Compass sections are a 150mm deep, with a single reinforced wall design. This

makes them lightweight and easy to install. Compass is able to support both

BSEN124 B125 and D400 loadings with added reinforcement and concrete

surround.

Compass parts are manufactured from 100% recycled polypropylene. All

Compass parts are highly resistant to attack from acids and alkalis and other

forms of chemical erosion. They are able to withstand high loading forces

which means that a concrete backfill is not required in many applications.

Compass Highway Composite Access Chambers system is a modular twinwall

access chamber system which has been designed as a fast-buildhigh

strength stress free solution to traditional concrete and brick built chambers.

Manufactured from high quality recyclable polypropylene giving ultimate

strength whilst keeping transport and handling costs to a minimum. Compass

ADD-A-STEP modular ladders are designed to allow easy access to chambers

and are approved for use in potable water, waste water, highly corrosive and

general construction applications and are a cheaper, safer more user friendly

alternative to traditional stainless steel ladders.

The ADD-A-STEP™ modular ladder system is designed to provide a product

that can be supplied off the shelf for next day delivery. Each module of the

ADD-A-STEP™ ladder consists of two stiles, one rung and two retaining clips.

Each stile measures 360mm long, 80mm wide and 32mm thick maximum

dimension. The ladder width outside the stiles (uprights) is 435mm.

The ADD-A-STEP™ ladder has 30mm diameter rungs at 300mm centre

spacing and the width or foot space inside the stiles is 375mm. Two types

of wall brackets are supplied as standard, one for circular and one for square

chambers. The ladder can be assembled on site using the number of modules

to achieve any length and can be trimmed to length without the need for

expensive cutting equipment. The only piece of equipment required is a

standard hand saw of any description.

COMPASS ADD-A-STEP™

BENEFITS

The Modular design allows for more economical transportation than fully

assembled ladders. The ADD-A-STEP™ ladder requires no maintenance

other than occasional cleaning with a pressure hose if desired. The ladder

has excellent insulation properties so it can be used in applications where

electrical cables are present. The materials used, polybutelene (PBT) are

UV tolerant, non-corrosive and ultimately fully recyclable. Being injection

moulded ladders can easily be cut on site with no harmful shards or dust

given off.

Contractors and Water Utilities will have major benefits regarding Health &

Safety issues particularly weight. At approx. 5Kg per linear metre the ladder

is significantly lighter than galvanized or stainless steel alternatives.

The yellow colour of the ADD-A-STEP™ system has High Visibility properties

making it clearly visible when the manhole cover is raised. There is also a

proven reduced CAPEX versus stainless steel. The ADD-A-STEP™ system is

fully compliant and tested to - BSEN14396.
