Never attempt to charge or discharge the following types of battery:

A battery pack which consists of different types of cells (including cells from different manufacturers).

A battery that is already fully charged or only slightly discharged.

Non-rechargeable batteries (explosion hazard).

Batteries that require a different charge technique from NiCd, NiMH, LiPo or Gel cell (Pb, Lead acid).

A faulty or damaged battery.

A battery fitted with an integral charge circuit or a protection circuit.

Batteries installed in a device or which are electrically linked to other components.

Batteries that are not suitable for charging at the rates that the charger delivers during the charge process.

LiFe Voltage level: 3.3V/cell Maximum charge voltage: 3.6V/cell Allowable fast charge current: 4C or less Discharge voltage cut off level: 2.0V/cell or higher

Pb (Lead-acid) Voltage level: 2.0V/cell Maximum charge voltage: 2.46V/cell Allowable fast charge current: 0.4C or less Discharge voltage cut off level: 1.75V/cell or higher

To avoid a short circuit between the charge leads, always connect the charge leads to the charger first, then connect the battery. Reverse the sequence when disconnecting. If using a charging squid, ensure that none of the connector contacts can touch (together or a conductive surface) and short out which could cause damage to the charger and/or battery.

NiCd and NiMH battery charge/discharge and discharge/charge cycles

Pb (Lead Acid) battery program

You can set the charge and discharge sequence on the left and the number of cycles on the right. You can balance, refresh and break-in a battery using this function. You can also set a temporary cool-off (or ‘waste time’) procedure.

Press the ‘Battery/Stop’ button to stop the program. You can press the ‘Start/Enter’ button to alter the charge current. A sound is emitted to indicate the end of program.

This program is only suitable for charging Pb (lead-acid) batteries with nominal voltages from 2 to 20V. A Pb (lead-acid) battery is completely different from a NiCd / NiMH battery. These batteries can only deliver a much lower current lower in comparison to their capacity. The same restriction applies to the charging process. Therefore the optimum charge current should only be 1/10 of the capacity. Do not attempt to fast charge a Pb battery. Please follow the instructions provided by the battery manufacturer. Press the ‘Start / Enter’ button to make the charge current blink and then alter the value using the ‘Increase’ or ‘Decrease’ buttons. Press the ‘Start/Enter’ button to store the value.

When the end of the cycle approaches, you can see the capacity of the battery being charged or discharged. You can also press the ‘Increase’ or ‘Decrease’ button to display the result of each cycle.

Set the desired charge current on the left and nominal voltage on the right. The current range 0.1-8.0A. The voltage should match the voltage of the battery being charged. Press the ‘Start/Enter’ button for more than 3 seconds to start charging.

The screen displays the real-time charging status. Press the ‘Start/Enter’ key to alter the charge current. Press the ‘Start/Enter’ button again to store the value. Press the ‘Battery/Stop’ key to end the program.

There are a number of User Settings that can be adjusted to alter the default charger set-up.

This program allows the Delta peak voltage to be adjusted from the NiMH default of 11mV/cell.

This program allows the Delta peak voltage to be adjusted from the NiCd default of 9mV/cell.

The check time is how long it takes to identify a LiXX battery. Increase this value if the number of cells cannot be accurately determined.

The waste time is the period between a Charge>Discharge cycle to allow the battery to cool between operations.

This function monitors the temperature of the battery being charged when using an optional temperature sensor (not included) connected to the charger’s termperature sensor port.

When the charge process starts, the integral safety timer also begins. If an error is detected or the termination circuit cannot detect whether the battery is fully charged or not, the Duplex is programmed to prevent overcharging by terminating the charge using the safety timer. When charging NiCd or NiMH batteries, divide the capacity by current, then divide the result by 11.9. Set this number of minutes as the value for the safety timer setting. At this point, around 140% of the capacity will have been fed into the battery.

Have you selected the appropriate program suitable for the type of battery you are charging?

Did you set up the correct current for charging or discharging?

Have you checked the battery voltage? Lithium battery packs can be wired in parallel and in series, i.e. a 2 cell pack can be 3.7V (in parallel) or 7.4V (in series). Use a fire-proof LiPo charging bag when charging/discharging Lithium batteries. Have you checked that all connections are firm and secure? Make sure there are no intermittent contacts at any point in the circuit.

Charging:

During charge process, a specific amount of electrical energy is fed into the battery. The charge quantity is calculated by multiplying charge current by charge time. The maximum permissible charge current varies depending on the battery type or its performance, and can be found in the information supplied by the battery manufacturer. Only batteries that are expressly stated to be capable of quick-charging are allowed to be charged at rates higher than the standard charge current.

Connect the battery to the correct charger terminal: Red is positive and Black is negative. Due to the difference between resistance of the cable and connector, the charger cannot detect the resistance of the battery pack, the essential requirement for the charger to work properly is that the charge lead should be of adequate conductor cross-section, and high quality connectors which are normally gold-plated should be fitted to both ends.

Always refer to the battery manufacturer’s data sheet or manual for the recommended charging current and charging time. Lithium batteries should be charged strictly in accordance to the charging instruction provided by the manufacturer. It is always recommended that you balance charge Lithium batteries wherever possible and always se a fire-proof LiPo charging bag when charging/discharging Lithium batteries.

Special attention should be paid to the connection of Lithium batteries.

Do not attempt to disassemble a Lithium battery pack.

Please note that Lithium battery packs can be wired in parallel and in series. In parallel connection, the battery's capacity is calculated by multiplying single battery's capacity by the number of cells with the total voltage staying the same. As a voltage imbalance between the cells may lead to fires or an explosion, we recommend that ony Lithium batteries wired in series are charged.

Please check the following points before commencing charging: Voltage balancing and monitoring when discharging batteries

Charging NiCd and NiMH batteries

The 4th cell can be seen with a much lower voltage than the others so this is the problem cell. The voltage value will fall to zero if the cell is disconnected.

The processor monitors the voltage of each cell in the battery pack during the ‘storage’ and ‘discharge’ process. To use this feature, the battery’s balance lead must be connceted to the charger. If the voltage of any cell is abnormal, the Duplex will show an error message and terminate the program. If there is an abnormal cell in your battery, press the ‘Increase’ button when you see the error message to view which cell has the problem.

The processor has detected that one cell’s voltage is too low.

This program is for charging and discharging the popular NiCd/NiMH batteries that are so common in R/C model applications. Simply press the ‘Start/Enter’ button to make the value blink, then use the Increase or Decrease buttons to change the parameter value. Press the ‘Start/Enter’ key to store the value.

This program charges the battery using the current value you input. In the ‘auto’ state, you should set the charge current’s upper limit to avoid damaging the battery by using excessive current. Some batteries with low resistance and capacity can lead to higher current draw in the ‘auto’ charging mode. But in the manual mode, it will charge using the current you set. Press the ‘Increase’ and ‘Decrease’ buttons simultaneously when in the current field to switch between Auto and Manual modes.

The screen shows the real-time charge status. Pressthe ‘Batt.type/Stop’ key to end the program. A sound will be emitted to indicate the program has ended.

Discharging:

The main purpose of discharging is to clear the battery’s residual capacity, or to reduce the battery's voltage to a defined level. The same attention should be paid to the discharging process as charging. The final discharge voltage should be set up correctly to avoid deep-discharging. Lithium batteries should not be discharged to a value lower than the minimum voltage, or it will cause a rapid loss of capacity or a total failure. Generally, Lithium battery do not need to be discharged. Please pay attention to the minimum voltage of Lithium battery to protect the battery.

Some rechargeable batteries have a memory effect. If they are partly used and recharged before the whole charge is used, they ‘remember’ this and will only use that part of their capacity next time. This is a ‘memory effect.’ It is said that NiCd and NiMH batteries can suffer from memory effect. NiCd have more memory effect than NiMH.

We recommend only partial (rather than full) discharge of lithium batteries. Frequent full discharging should be avoided if possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a battery of larger capacity. Full capacity cannot be used until it has been subjected to 10 or more charge cycles. The cycling process or charge and discharge will optimize the capacity of battery pack.

The program has a maximum capacity protection feature. If the Delta peak voltage cannot be detected, the charge process will stop automatically when the battery reaches the user-set maximum charge capacity.

This function monitors the voltage of the input battery used to power the Duplex charger. If the voltage falls below the user-set value, the program will automatically terminate to protect the input battery.

When a process completes, the number of confirmation beeps can be adjusted here.

A beep is used to confirm that a button has been pressed. The beep or a melody sounds at various times during operation to confirm there has been a mode change. These functions can be switched on or off.

This function is used to limit the maximum power of the charger.

These functions are used to alter the default values of termination voltage/cell for LiPo, LiIo, LiFe LiHv and Pb batteries.

The menu language can be changed from English to German in this function.

PROGRAM FLOW CHARTThis function is for balancing the voltage of Lithium-polymer battery cells while charging. In balance mode, the battery must use a balance lead to connect to the individual port in the corresponding side of the charger. When charging in this mode, the built-in processor monitors the voltage of each cell and controls the current fed into individual cells to normalize the voltages.

The screen shows the nominal voltage of a Lithium battery. The Duplex is capable of charging: LiFe (3.3V), LiIo (3.6V) and LiPo (3.7V). This information is of critical importance, so you must check the battery carefully to ensure that it is set up correctly. If it is different from correct value, a fire or explosion can occur during the charge process.

To avoid damage from incorrect settings being input, the Duplex automatically detects the cell count of Lithium batteries at the beginning of the charge or discharge process.

However, a battery that has been deep-discharged may not be detected correctly. To avoid this error, the time allowed for the processor to verify the cell count can be adjusted. Normally,15 seconds is enough to detect the cell count correctly but you may need to extend the time limit for large capacity batteries. The default value is recommended to use first. Only adjust this if the cell count is not detected correctly.

The screen shows the сut-off temperature of a Lithium battery. You can press ‘Decrease’ or ‘Increase’ to adjust the сut-off temperature (The temperature range is: 20~80°C). The maximum temperature of the battery can be set during the charge process. The process will be terminated automatically to protect the battery if the battery’s temperature reaches this value. This feature is only available when using a temperature probe (option part - not included).
