N6. MICROSOFT DATA CENTER, DUBLIN, 550,000 SFAn aerial view of Microsoft's huge Dublin data center.Microsofts new Dublin Data Center represents amilestone in data center design. Thenew facility will powermuch of Microsofts globalcloud computing operation, while usingfar lessenergy and waterthan typically consumed inotherdata centers of this scale.TheDublin center operates at a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.25, Microsoft says, compared toaverages of about 2.0 for the industry. The design innovations drivingits efficiency include a free cooling system that uses outside air to cool the data center, and aserver pod design thatemployshot aisle containment tosupport warmer operating temperatures inside theserver space. Microsoft saysit can run its server rooms at temperatures of up to 95 degrees F (35 degrees Celsius), much warmer than most data centers, which typically range between 68 and 72 degrees. MICROSOFT CHICAGO DATA CENTER, Chicago 700,000 SFA view of the container area in the new Microsoft data center in Chicago.The enormous Microsoft Chicago Data Center in Northlake, Illinois showcases a container-driven design that Microsoft expects to deliver huge benefits in cost and energy efficiency. The new data center is an unusual hybrid of what Microsoft views as the present and future of data center design, separated by a staircase. The lower level is a vast space with a high ceiling and diagonal parking spaces for double-stacked 40-foot shipping containers filled with up to 2,000 servers. The first phase can hold up to 56 containers, and a second phase (currently shell space) offers identical capacity, giving the Chicago facility a total capacity of 112 containers holding 224,000 servers. The second floor of the enormous facility features traditional raised-floor data center space using hot and cold aisles. The upstairs area includes space for four 12,000 square foot pods of raised-floor space, enough to support tens of thousands of additional servers to power Microsofts Live suite of online services. MICROSOFT QUINCY AND SAN ANTONIO DATA CENTERS, 470,000 SFAn aerial view of the Microsoft data center in Quincy, WashingtonAfter years of operating in third-party facilities, Microsoft began building its own data centers in 2007 as it ramped up its battle with Google in the online services arena. Its first in-house project was a huge data center in the small Washington town of Quincy, where Microsoft invested $550 million in building a 470,000 square foot data center supported by hydro-electric power from nearby dams on the Columbia River. NNow, what is the difference between highly virtualized computing and a private cloud.

Highly virtualized computing gives you the benefits of increased utilization of your servers, power savings, and reduced server footprint. We are familiar with these as they are in datacenters today. However, this does not equal the private cloud.

A Private cloud provides all of those benefits plus highly integrated and automated management, scalable and elastic platforms, and self service.
