All together having fun…Hard work was followed by lunch in a small forest picnic area, with the meal cooked in fire stoves controlled by the forest rangers heading the group. Time for a meeting with the whole group while also meeting local gastronomy.

Touring around Lithu-anian cities…On the 26th September, teachers and students visited two of the most impor-tant cities in the country, Vilnius (current capital) and Trakai (ancient leisure area of the Lithuanian royal elite). In Vilnius, the group walked around some of the city’s highlights. The visit provided a very interesting perspective on a differ-ent culture and architecture. Also time for souvenirs. In Trakai, the next city, the group had lunch at a local restaurant with an aston-ishing view over the magnificent castle set in the middle of a big lake.

Lifetime memories…On the last day, students and teachers were given a participation certificate dur-ing the closing ceremony: good for the curriculum and a wonderful token to help us remember a great meeting between languages and cultures. On the way back home, first feeling of nostalgia and happiness showed up. Indeed, the chance of a lifetime.

New country, new cul-ture…During the meeting, students and teach-ers faced a different culture and mi-lieu. Though habits and traditions were clearly different, sharing them became an opportunity for cultural enhancement namely on what Lithuanian culture is concerned (gastronomy, social proce-dures, family habits…).

The Portuguese group thanks and under-lines the gentle and proficient welcome shown by the host school as well as the warm atmosphere among all the partici-pants that, as a group, made it possible for a memorable trip to Lithuania.

Lithuania: a mystery desti-nationBetween the 23rd and the 27th Sep-tember, the students Filipe Ganaipo and Patrícia Justino, from the Portuguese school Agrupamento de Escolas de Alcanena – Escola Secundária, together with the teachers Ana Cristina Gonzalez and Elizabete Catalão, participated in the 4th meeting of the Comenius project “My River – My Life”, in Lithuania (Kaunas). During the meeting, there were visits to some cities and their rivers and the students also developed several experi-ences on biology and chemistry.

From Portugal (Alviela river)After visiting the host school, the stu-dents of the six countries participating in the meeting made a small presenta-tion on the rivers of their homelands. The Portuguese students provided some information about the history of the river (Alviela), its importance for the com-munity and the results of the research

held on the quality of the river (chemical analysis). This research was based on water collected on different days. The Portuguese presentation was generally appreciated.

Speaking on Chemis-try…On the second day, the group visited the local Botanical Garden (Kaunas). After a guided tour, some chemical experi-ences were held, in order to improve the students’ knowledge on the local flora and fauna.

A bit of each country left in Kaunas…All the participants left their footprint in Lithuania, due to a joint activity in which 3000 pines were planted to help renovate a small part of the Kaunas for-est. Rows of trees were planted and the activity proved to be highly amusing and rewarding, though it took place under rain showers and temperatures around 8ºC.

La sera andammo all’ tutti assieme.

Sense adonar-te veuràs que has millorat moltíssim.

My personal experience in LithuaniaThe Comenius project represented an important opportunity for me. A part from being able to travel to another country, I’ve met wonderful people with whom I have a great friendship and I hope it will last as long as possible. I found the life in Lithuania quite different from the one here in Catalonia. There is a different currency: the lite. Three lites and a bit more euro equal an euro. One thing that struck me was to see, when leaving home, a military school where children as well as teenagers were with weapons.Another thing that surprised me was how they drive, very fast and mostly without respect very much the traf-fic signs. Buses were different from the ones we have in Catalonia, there were two types: a private bus, it was like a van, where you paid 2 lites and it brought you where you wanted (as a kind of taxi but with more people); and the second kind called “bus with mus-tache” because it was electric. It also struck me when going into the taxi; you had to shut the door quickly, because the driver was already running. We paid and we got our change while we were seated and the car was driving.Every evening we had free time we went to Akropolis, which is like a shop-ping mall. There we had great fun with skating on ice, another important thing, you could spend forty-five minutes on the court for a price of 7 lites (about 2euros).Another thing that surprised us was how quickly they ate, walked etc.. We asked them why was it due to and they said it was because they were used to it as they had not many free time because of

The last but not the least important as-pect of what I want to talk about is the importance of English. Many of us are already aware that it is an international language and that we should all know it, but some students do not appreciate or do not want to study it. I encourage all those who are hard to devote more time with English to practice it. It should not be boring, it’s even a great fun if you do what you like for example listening to music, watching TV, reading in English every day. Without realizing it you will see that you have improved it a lot. You cannot show all you know, but once you’re in another country and you need to communicate and speak English you realize that you really know much more than you thought. The experience was wonderful, I value it with the highest score I can say that I would repeat the same people I met.

Last September i participat-ed with the Comenius project about wa-ter and rivers that our school is working on for one year. When I heard about it

and I was asked to participate I thought it could be a great experience and I was able to confirm this when I was there, in Kaunas. We arrived late night, at about 1:30 and my host family (let’s call it this way) was waiting for me.The first thing that struck me there was the great hospitality of the family who welcomed me, they asked if I was hungry after the flight, and how was everything going on, and also questions about Palamós. What surprised me most was that the temperature here and there was completely different. In Kaunas they were wearing coats and when I said that in Palamós there were 35 degrees centigrade they couldn’t imagine and they didn’t stop repeating “I want to go to Palamós with you.”One of the other things that will surprise you is how is the city itself. The streets, the houses, the people and the outside in general is very different from ours. I was especially surprised that almost all the houses in the street had the same or similar structure, like a large build-ing made of more buildings. The river crossing Kaunas gave the city a special feeling.I think they drive dangerously and one day I found a funny situation. There was a large row of cars in front of a traffic light, it got green and nobody could run ahead because there was a car parked with no one inside. With my host we got on very well, the same musical tastes, same hobbies, etc. ... So my stay in a house with this fam-ily was not a problem. The mother was also open-minded, but she didn’t know English, and I also had a good friendship with their dog. It slept with me while it usually slept with the guy.I sum up saying that the trip was a great experience where I took many new friendships and learning with me. It was very satisfactory. If you tell me to repeat it I wouldn’t doubt it.

MANO UPĖ – MANO GYVENIMAS4-asis susitikimas Kaune “ Vanduo, moks-las ir aplinka”

2013 m. 23-27 dienomis vyko Come-nius daugiašalės mokyklų partnerystės projekto „My river... my life“ partnerių atstovų susitikimas.

Svečiai nepralei-do progos įsigyti namiškiams lauktuvių.

MY RIVER- MY LIFE4-th meeting in Kaunas “ Water, science and envoiroment”

From 23 to 27 September, a meeting of project partners of Comenius multilateral school partnership project “My river ... my life” took place. This time the honour to host the Romanian, Latvian, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish and Italian rep-resentatives was given to Kaunas King Mindaugas Vocational Training Centre (hereinafter referred to as the Centre). According to the project coordinator Sandra Venckuvienė, project participants have met four times so far, the visits to Italy and Portugal have still remained, and that is what the project participants did in Lithuania.

From an unusual history lesson to enter-tainment on an ice rinkMonday began with the arrival of fellow students and teachers from other coun-tries. The students of the Centre, whose families were ready to receive guests, were waiting for their new friends with great excitement and anticipation. After a joyful meeting and greeting, the teachers from foreign countries went to a hotel while the students went to get acquainted with their “new families” and temporary home. On Tuesday, all project participants visit-ed the King Mindaugas Vocational Train-ing Center. At the beginning, the guests participated in a daily community meet-ing. Afterwards the team of the Centre showed the guest teachers around the Training Centre: the Beauty Studio, the Floral Studio, the Foot Care Studio and the kindergarten, whereas the students together with flower arrange-ment teacher Regina Ribokienė created the composition exclusively from natural materials on “My river ... my life”, which was later exhibited in the Centre.

Later the guests were invited to join the guided tour “ Kaunas , the City on the Confluence” , during which they saw the most significant historical attractions of Kaunas Old Town. After lunch the most important part of the day took place ,i.e. the conference “ Water , Science and Environment” , before which the part-ners of the Comenius project had the opportunity to get acquainted with the history of our country by participating in the festivities held in the Centre on a very special occasion ( on that day the school was officially awarded the name of King Mindaugas ) . Thus, everyone gathered in the assembly hall, where they attended the openening ceremony of the art exhibition “Medieval Lithuanian Rulers and Dukes” by painter Artūras Slapšys . During the conference, each country team presented their homework , which was prepared in accordance with a common methodology develop by biologists : using biological indicators ( the invertebrates found ) to determine the river pollution of their country. Everybody was very pleased to find out that the water of our river Nemunas was not really very polluted compared to the rivers of other countries. In the evening, after the serious work, project partici-pants enjoyed themselves skating on an ice rink , and the entertainment was a lifetime experience for the guests from the countries further south . Skating lesson reinforced the friendship between teams , the students were happy say-ing that it was the best team-building lesson.

They left, but promised to come back...On Wednesday morning, the project partners went to the Botanical Gar-

dens under Vytautas Magnus University (VMU). Together with the director of the Botanical Gardens Education Centre Jurgita Bukšnienė, the guests used mi-croscopes to explore the Nemunas water microorganisms, moreover, chemical water tests were conducted to establish the content of nitrates, nitrites, phos-phates , heavy metals and water hard-ness; water dishes with plants and the surface tension phenomenon were also observed. The activity which was en-joyed most by all teachers and students was planting trees in the forest near the Kaunas Lagoon. Together with Dubrava EMMU forest district manager Kęstutis Bacvinka and his team of foresters 50 participants planted trees. It was unani-mously agreed that this was the most fruitful of all project activities because when planting the forest, a promise to come back and see the trees growing was given. After hard work, it was fun to taste delicious fire-roasted potatoes, sausages and the omelette of fifty eggs fried in a huge frying pan. In the evening the guests were able to relax in the Cen-tre and pamper themselves with some beauty treatments.

Thursday coincided with the European Day of Languages. It is a pleasure that the day was observed along with the Comenius project participants as all the community of the Centre was able to to feel and experience linguistic and cul-tural diversity. Language teachers and students of the Gymnasiums , together with the guest students and teachers in their own languages wrote the greetings and best wishes devoted to the European Day of Languages . These multilingual greetings decorated the stands along

with the posters which reflected the uniqueness of each country represented by the flag , some words and phrases , the maps and cultural uniqueness . Another part of the day included the trip to the capital of Lithuania . In Vilnius the project partners took a walk along the river Vilnelė and Užupis . It was interest-ing to see to what extent the city and its people’s life is influenced by the river . After visiting the Money Museum, the guests wandered along the streets of the Old Town admiring the churches , the Presidential Palace, the Town Hall and the Aušra Gates. The visitors did not miss the chance to buy presents and gifts to their families. In the afternoon the project partners went to Trakai, where they admired the town surround-ed by lakes and the ancient castle that made an unforgetable impression on the guests . Kernavė, a cultural herritage, was also visited , an eco-friendly ferry in Čiobiškis was tested . The day was full of excitement and impressions, however, the evening was marked by the sadness of some project participants , because for most of the guests it was the last night of their stay .On the last day there was a meet-ing with the vice-mayor of the city of Kaunas and the representatives of the Department of Education in Kaunas city municipality. Deputy mayor Vytautas Vasilenko, responsible for the area of education, welcomed the guests and said that he supported and promoted environmental project ideas. Many words of thanks were received by J.Bukšnienė, the director of the Botanical Gardens under Vytautas Magnus University, who also participated in the meeting. Due to her efforts and the work of the staff of

the Botanical Gardens under VMU, the research of the Nemunas water has gained scientific value.

Finally, it was time for the closing programme, during which the film about the meeting in Lithuania was shown. This new moment in the project left nobody indifferent. At the end of the programme, the participants were awarded diplomas and had a farewell dinner. The week had passed as one day, there were farewell tears in the eyes of some partners, but the promises to meet and the invitations to come again proved that our friendship grew stron-ger, that we feel a part of united Europe. Saying goodbye the guests emphasized that they had enjoyed a warm recep-tion, excellent organization, exciting programme of the visit, attention and hospitality. Guests from the countries further south maintained that they were impressed by cleanliness and tidiness of Lithuania . Now we are looking forward to the remaining two meetings of project partners in Italy and Portugal.

We were here and we loved it! You know Comenius project did it right, when after two weeks from the de-parture, you’re still thinking about the people you were with, you’re still smiling when you remember fragments of the time you spent together, and you start making plans with the others to arrange a meeting as soon as you can.Lithuania was a very pleasant surprise for each of us and the meeting in Kaunas was perfect in every way: hosting, com-munication, cooperation, understanding. The fact that we were all really close and communicative, made Kaunas feel like home. So, we made friends and through these friendships we have learned many things. We learned about culture, we learned so many words in 6 languages and we discovered new, different and really nice characters. We materialized together the idea of “My river, my life”. Each country represented on a board their river and in the end, when all the works were done, we have

romania [ ]

united all the rivers to create only one: ours, Comenius River. This was the 1st symbolic step towards new friendships. Even if we knew our duty and the pur-pose with which we have moved to this mobility, we could not manage better our “business” with pleasure and fun! When it was about science, work and projects, we were taking our job seriously, but when we had spare time, we do man-aged to make the transition from work to fun very slight. So we were still an united team even when it was to party. Buzau team worked well with the rest of the project. Special relationships were related and we are thinking very seri-ously at the idea of meeting all again. After all, this is the goal: to overcome language barriers and learn to commu-nicate by the heart, above any existing alphabet.Of course the alphabet had its very important role in building the Glos-sary from which we’ve learned scientific terms related to water. It was interest-ing to learn the same words in different languages. Fascinating was that some of them were similar in several languages, while others were very hard to even

pronounce. Eitherway, it was another notable experience.Regarding our theme, water, we visited a park where we saw the confluence of two major rivers. Old town of Kaunas is located exactly in the place where the Neris river meets Nemunas river. Awe-some view! We also did some analysis on water at Vytautas Magnus University. It was very interesting because we found some micro-organisms in the water and we analyzed them on the microscope. We were surprised to see that a creature so small has so defined forms. On Thursday, we had our one-day trip to Villnius and Trakai. Even if Villnius was simply amazing, a wonderful surprise waited for us in Trakai: Trakai Castle – a real Venice. This castel is on the water and the landscape is like a fairytale. We had gone back in time and we felt just like princes and princesses! This is just a summary of our activity, but we could talk for hours about our beautiful experience we would love to repeat anytime!

BUZĂU - MY RIVER-MY LIFE CLEAN WATER FOR A HEALTY WORLDPEDAGOGICAL HIGH SCHOOL BUZAU - ROMANIA

The water catchment basin of Buzau river is part of the Danube catchment area. The total basin area is 52,964 km2 with an estimated length of 1,656 km. The main hydrographic artery that runs through the river basin is Buzau river, with a length of 306 km.Are organisms adapted to certain environmental conditions becoming bioindicators of these types of water

Macroscopic algae Macroinvertebrates Fishes

MacroinvertebratesMacroinvertebrates are organisms larger than 5 mm that live on a rocky, muddy or sandy bottom of the rivers or on the aquatic plants in a certain time of their existence. Benthic macroinvertebrates (organisms that live on lake, river, the bottom of the sea) are best used as bioindicators because: they are numerous, easily collected and less mobile.M

Physicochemical analysis of water samples:

Water temperature — The tempera-ture of a waterbody directly affects many physical, biological and chemical char-acteristics. For exemples, oxygen is less soluble in warmer water which can affect aquatic life.

pH — Refers to the acidity or alkalinity of the water which affects the survival of aquatic life. Pure water has a pH of 7, acidic solutions have lower pH values and alkaline solutions have higher values Dissolved oxygen — is a measure of the quantity of oxygen present in water.

O2 is essential for almost all forms of life.

Nitrogen — Nitrogen compounds can be found naturally in surface waters and in groundwater. High concentrations of nitrogen in water bodies are often the result of human activities. Nitrogen compounds commonly measured in waterways include nitrate, nitrite and ammonia.

Phosphorus — The phosphorus found in both surface water and groundwater is in a form called phosphate. Soil and fertiliser particles can carry phosphorus and sewage is also rich in phosphorus, and can, also, lead to eutrophication and degradation of stream water quality.

Monitoring Buzau River

Within this project, we intend to de-termine the water quality by physico-chemicaland biological analysis of Buzau river in Buzau monitoring section.Sampling of water and aquatic organ-isms is a very important phase in the process of physico-chemical and biologi-cal analysis of water. After sampling, the observation sheet was completed and there were noted the transparency, temperature, pH and water color while the remaning data were analyzed and processed in the laboratory.Within the practical activity was realized the greening of right and left banks of Buzau river in the city of Buzau.

3.Biological qualityThe analysis of Buzau river macroinvertebrates showed the presence of a large number of species which indicates the level of pollution. There are sensitives species in the upper river but also tolerant in the middle and in the lower course of the river, where we can see the influence of insufficiently purged water.Macroinvertebrates have always attracted attention due to the short life of the adult stage (from few hours to few weeks) and the presence of aquatic larval stage.Percentage numerical abundance values were 73% (Ephemeroptera, Chiromidae), and the minimum of 0.02% (Trichoptera), 0.79% (Mollusca).

Test OneCollect 50 macroinvertebrates and sort them into like Taxa groups. Use the formula below to deter-mine the quality of the water. Note that the Taxa groups will indicate their tolerance to pollution. The Taxa group with the most organisms is most tolerable to pollution. The Taxa group with the least organisms is the least tolerable to pollution.

Group 1 - 10 different Taxa found, 10 x 1 = 10 (score)

Group 2 – 3 different Taxa found, 3 x 2 = 6 (score)Group 3 - 17 different Taxa found, 17 x 3 = 51 (score)Different Taxa = 30 Total Group Score = 67Formula: {Total Group Score (67) }/{Number of different Taxa(30)} = 2.233 (Pollution Index)Result: Good Water Quality

Test TwoThe Sequential Comparison Index (SCI) is based on the theory of runs. A new run begins each time an organism picked from the sample looks different than the one picked just before it.

SCI = (number of runs)/(total number of organ-isms picked) Total Runs = 10Total Organisms = 16SCI = 10/16 = 0.625Water Quality = Good0=samex=differentTotal organisms: 16Total runs: 10

Total Runs = 10

Total Organisms = 16

SCI = 10/16 = 0.625

Water Quality = Good

Test ThreeDiversity Index (DI )You need to determine the Taxa Richness of your sample population. To do this you must count the number of different Taxa. Multiply the Taxa Richness by the SCI value

Formula:DI = SCI x Taxa RichnessResults:Taxa Group= Taxa Richness=30SCI= 0.625DI= 0.625x 30DI= 18.75

Water PollutionSources of water pollutionorganized sources that cause pollution from discharge of substances into the water through plants for this purpose, such as-sewers, discharges from industries or farmers.Unorganized sources that cause pollution by uncontrolled penetration of substances into the water. Influence of water pollution on the environment.

A) Organic substances B) Inorganic substances

• The organic substances of natural origins (vegetal) consumes oxy-gen

• in the water for development and even after death . Lack of oxygen in the water has the effect of stop-ping the aerobic processes includ-ing self-cleaning .

• Phenol is a toxic fish nervous, it gives the fish an unpleasant smell an odor

• Detergents rise on the surface of the water as a foam and, water self-purification is prevent and also its use for irrigation .

• Pesticides can be the cause of se-rious illness (cancer), neurological disorders and endocrine disorders

• Inorganic salts can cause the increase of water hardness and high hardness waters produce de-posits and reduces heat transfer capacity.

• Chlorides beyond certain limits, make water unfit for alimentation and irrigation

C) Suspensions.

Both organic and inorganic suspen-sions deposit and form banks that stop navigation, consuming the oxygen in the water. If substances are only or-ganic matter, they lead to the forma-tion of smelly gases.

D) Radioactive substances.

Biological effect can be somatic
