Book Flights Strategically

The day and time of the flight matter, especially at busy airports. Early morning flights on Tuesday through Thursday are best. It's common sense, really. Leisure travelers tend to fly on or

right before or after weekends — often trying to stretch their vacations by booking post-work-hours departures and later-in-the-day returns. Business travelers tend to fly on Monday, to get

a start on the business week, and Friday, to get home for the weekend. Hence, early morning midweek flights are cheaper, less crowded and have better on-time departure records. Plus,

with early flights, if there are delays or cancellations, you stand a better chance of being rebooked on a same-day flight.

Know Your Airport

Prior to departure, study the layout on the airport's website. Find your terminal and plan a route directly to it. Determine if reaching your terminal requires a long walk or boarding a shuttle

or tram. Research security-line wait times on the airport and Transportation Security Administration websites. Check the historical traffic patterns on roads to the airport at the time you're

flying. Before heading to the airport, check on your departure gate (it might have changed) and on real-time traffic.

Rely on Technology

You can prep for your flight online or with a smartphone. Check your flight's status and print out your boarding pass before leaving home, and sign up for email flight-status alerts. Airline

apps not only provide alerts, but also let you download a digital boarding pass and opt for automatic rebooking on the next available flight if your original flight is canceled. Online

technology and apps can also let you do things like book an airport parking space ahead of time — especially important during the holidays when lots fill up.

Arrive at the Airport Early — or Earlier Still

We've all been told to arrive at least an hour before domestic flights. The operative words here are "at least." If your airport and traffic research indicates you need to factor in still more

time, do it. The worst that can happen when you arrive earlier than needed is you'll spend more time hanging out at the gate, where you can grab a bite, do some reading or do a little

shopping. At some airports, you can even get a spa treatment. All this is far less stressful than the worst that can happen when you arrive late.

Pack With the Wisdom of Experience

Know your airline's carry-on size limits and checked-bag weight restrictions, and pack accordingly to avoid delays at check-in or boarding. Before arriving at the airport, put ID tags both

inside and outside of your bags. Some savvy travelers say using only carry-on luggage is the best way to travel these days: You'll not only save money, but also time at both check-in and

arrival.

Prepare for Airport Security

On the day of your flight, put jewelry, watches, belts and change in your carry-on before leaving home. Wear only one jacket or coat, as opposed to multiple layers, all of which have to

come off at security. Wear slip-on shoes or boots with zippers so you can get them off quickly. Head to security ASAP, with your clear, plastic 3-1-1 toiletries kit and your laptop or tablet

computer at the ready to put into bins (remember that digital devices need their own bins) and your identification and boarding pass in hand. If we all were prepared at security, the lines

would move faster — even at the busiest airports.

Counter

Step 1

Enter the airport at the "Departures" level

and find the ticket counter of the airline that

you are traveling.

Step 2

Locate the appropriate counter line. Airlines

may have one line for all customers or have

several lines such as one for business

travelers, one for frequent fliers and one for

domestic travel.

Step 3

Approach the ticket counter when

summoned by the counter clerk. Hand the

clerk your identification or passport and any

written materials containing your flight

number. He may ask you some questions

regarding the content of your luggage and

how many bags you have.

Step 4

Place your luggage one piece at a time on

the scale next to the ticket counter. After

weighing your luggage, the counter clerk will

attach the destination tag, remove the

luggage and send it through the airport to

your plane. He will then hand you your

boarding passes and return your

identification. You may then proceed to the

appropriate gate.

Curbside

Step 1

Go to the curbside porter and check in

booth for your airline, typically located by

the entrance doors of the airline on the

"Departures" level of the airport.

Step 2

Give the porter your identification and flight

information. She will take your luggage to

the outdoor check in booth to weigh it,

attach the destination tag and send it into

the airport to the plane.

Step 3

Tip the porter for carrying your bag when

she returns with your identification,

boarding pass and baggage claim receipt.

Typically, tipping for this service is $1 per

bag.

Kiosk

Step 1

Insert the credit card that you used to make your

airline reservation into the appropriate slot of the

kiosk. Alternatively, scan your itinerary barcode.

This allows the system to find and display your

information.

Step 2

Follow all prompts. The kiosk system shows the

name of all passengers who have tickets

purchased with that particular credit card. The

system allows you to check all passengers in,

choose or change seats and input luggage

information.

Step 3

Attach luggage destination tags to luggage. The

kiosk dispenses these tags after passenger and

luggage confirmation. You will also receive your

boarding pass.

Step 4

Place your luggage where indicated. Depending on

the airline and airport, you may need to carry your

luggage a short distance to the luggage collection

area. Some airlines station personnel at the

kiosks to take your luggage after your complete

the check-in process.

3 Options are Available

2 Options are Available

for your convenience

Print Your Boarding Pass Online

Step 1

Log into your account 12 to 24 hours before your flight departs. Depending

on the airline, you will be able to check-in online the day of or the day

before your departure. Most airlines will send you an e-mail when you can

check-in.

Step 2

Enter your reference number or frequent flyer number to log in. Again, this

differs by airline. You will likely have all the necessary information on the

confirmation email that was sent to you when you initially purchased your

ticket online.

Step 3

Confirm your flight times and seat. Once you log in, you will be able to see

your itinerary. Make sure everything is accurate.

Step 4

Check in online. You will see an option for online check-in or "print

boarding pass." Click it and follow the on-screen instructions.

Step 5

Print your boarding pass. Ensure that your printer has sufficient ink and is

printing to scale. Do not shrink or stretch the document.

Step 6

Bring your boarding pass to the airport. The document you printed is your

ticket and your boarding pass. Show it to airport security in order to enter

the concourse. Note that you do not have to check in with guest services.

However, if you need to check baggage, you will still need to approach the

desk.

Print Your Boarding Pass at the Airport

Step 1

Find your airline's check-in desk. Bring a government-issued identification card

and the credit card you used to purchase your ticket.

Step 2

Use the self-service kiosk. These kiosks allow you to swipe your credit card to

verify your identity. Your card will not be charged. Some kiosks also allow you to

swipe your passport. You can also find your itinerary by entering your name and

final destination or reference number.

Step 3

Choose your seats. At this point, you will be able to choose your seats or upgrade

your seats, if available.

Step 4

Check your baggage. Before proceeding through security, check your bags and

leave them with your airline's staff.

Step 5

Proceed through security. Keep your boarding pass out, as well as your

identification. You'll need this to proceed to your gate.

Trans States, you’re allowed to carry on 2 items.

When possible, do not pack oversized electronics (laptops, full-size video game consoles, DVD players and

video cameras that use cassettes) in checked baggage. However, please be advised that these items must

be removed from carry-on bags and submitted separately for X-ray screening. Click here for "checkpoint

friendly" laptop bag procedures. Small electronics, such as smartphones, tablets and certain other

mobile/portable electronic devices, can remain in carry-on baggage.

Prepare a 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag of liquids before arriving at the airport.

Pack all coats and jackets in checked baggage when possible. All coats and jackets must go through the X-

ray machine for inspection.

When in doubt, leave it out. Unsure if an item is prohibited or not? Travelers should place such items in their

checked baggage or leave the item at home.
