for the travelers’ inn project students were allowed to choose any world heritage site to develop their project. I chose victoria falls zimbabwe for its immaculate natural views and physical beauty.

the structure is implemented as an aesthetic feature of the building, while not impeding the immaculate views of the falls. To completely submerge travelers within the natural wonder, the cantilever must be supported by a five story box truss.

as seen from afar, the top and bottom slabs are extremely thick for increased stiffness to resist the excessive torsional forces and to be physically true to the materials which support the structure.

for this project i designed a multi-purpose recreation center in downtown champaign. without a large center for learning as well as recreation, the project satisfies both necessities for the town.

with a restrictive program, designating significant floor area to the gymnasium, I decided to use the space as a focal point for the project. by surrounding the gymnasium with the rest of the program, visitors maintain enhanced views of the gymnasium no where they’re located within the building. this created an elegant spatial relationship between the human scale of the occu-pants as well as the building scale of the project.

our ideas for a new architecture building on the UIC campus stem primarily from the needs expressed by students. It was clear that the existing conditions were seen as "dark and decrepit" and there was a notion that the ‘new’ facility needs a greater relation to the site and surrounding buildings.

studios

the new building sought to revitalize the space and push the envelope pursuant of technology and sustainability. the city of chicago is one of the leading green cities in the US, incorporating green roofs atop skyscrapers and hi-rises and practicing energy efficiency where be. this sustainable movement that once only existed downtown has now branched out to outlying suburbs and even into the Illinois farmland, yet, the conditions of the UIC campus remain dark and ominous.

many of the buildings presently have large concrete facades. our design uses curtain-walls and lightweight construc-tion to defeat this standard and the form strives to connect our site to the rest of the campus as well as downtown by extending towards the main arteries of the campus.

centrally located galleries and collab-orative circulation space integrate the programs of the all levels of architec-ture, undergraduate and graduate. this would allow both undergraduate and graduate schools to exist as a single entity rather than separatefactions. the way our project was develop would become the standard by which future new construction projects are measured.
