To commemorate the DRDO Golden Jubilee Celebration, Delhi-based Electronics & Computer Science (ECS) cluster labs, viz., SSPL, LASTEC, SAG, and DESIDOC jointly organised a symposium on Technologies and Systems at Prof Bhagavantam Auditorium, Metcalfe House, Delhi, during 23-24 October 2008. The august gathering who attended the event included CCs R&D, Directors of Technical & Corporate Directorates, Directors of Delhi-based DRDO labs, Officers and staff of the participating labs. Also present were representatives from Central Security Bureau, Deptt. of Intelligence and partners from industries and academia who have been a constant support. Dr PK Saxena, Director, SAG, Delhi, welcomed the invitees and expressed his gratitude to the participating labs for overwhelming response and cooperation. He added with a positive note that the Symposium would surely provide opportunity to appreciate and participate in the unique technological feast.

Shri KVSS Prasad Rao, former CC R&D, DRDO and presently Chairman, National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), Delhi was the Chief Guest and delivered the Keynote Address. Dr R Sreehari Rao, CC R&D (ECS) presided over the function. Shri GS Malik, Director, ECS, introduced the Chief Guest and expressed his gratitude to be part of the participating laboratories and lauded the efforts made by the laboratories in their growth. He expressed that in a short span of two-days a lot of opportunity will be provided to share technological developments and find a way for better growth. The Chief Guest gave a flash back of his association and experience with DRDO as a whole and the Delhi-based ECS cluster in particular. While speaking about the achievements he said, ‘DRDO too has seen its ups and downs like any other growing Organisation. But what we should be doing in future to survive and what we should deliver will show the results.’

view of the Souvenir, which is designed and printed by DESIDOC, Delhi to commemorate the occasion. Chief Guest Shri Rao released the Souvenir.

The Symposium was spread over four Technical Sessions each devoted to a specific theme/field and chaired by an eminent speaker. Fourteen lectures were delivered by experts from IISc, Banglore; IIT, Khragpur; IIT, Delhi; NIC, Delhi and DRDO. The intellectual interaction generated great interest during the deliberations.

HEMRL, Pune

the Workshop which was organised as part of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of DRDO and Centenary Celebrations of HEMRL. The Workshop aimed at providing a common platform to the eminent defence scientists across the globe to discuss the status on advances in propellant processing technologies and decide a roadmap for futuristic research work in this area. Dr Pillai, in his inaugural speech stressed the need for research collaboration among various research institutes, both within and outside the country and elaborated the development of solid rocket propellants in India. Prof Dr SE Hasnain, Vice-Chancellor, University of Hyderabad, the Guest of Honour, released the souvenir on the occasion. He advocated for the collaborative research projects with DRDO Labs, which will strengthen the basic research potential of the country.

Fourteen eminent scientists, Dr Vasant Gowariker, ISRO; Dr VN Krishnamurthy, Shri K Viswanathan, Dr Radhamohan, Prof Rajaram Nagappa, Dy Directors (Retd) VSSC; Shri MC Uttam, Director, ISRO Cell; Shri RR Khare, Shri SN Deshpande, Shri PG Shrotri, Associate Directors (Retd) HEMRL; Shri AM Naik, IOFS, Member (A&E) OF Board; Shri AK Kapoor, Emeritus Scientist, CFEES; Dr KRK Rao, and Dr Haridwar Singh, former Directors, HEMRL; Shri T Sriram, and Prof HS Mukunda, IISc, Bangalore who made significant contributions for the development and processing of rocket propellants were felicitated by the Chief Guest during the inaugural function.

Eminent scientists from France, Russia, Singapore, Israel, Japan, Brazil and India participated in the two-day Workshop. Nearly 300 delegates including scientists from foreign countries, DRDO, ISRO, Ordnance Factories, academic institutions and private industries also participated in the Workshop. More than 100 scientists from HEMRL were present in the Workshop for effective deliberation among the delegates.

Dr A Subhananda Rao, OS & Director, HEMRL who is patron of the workshop in his welcome address brought out that the green energetic materials which are friendly to the environment, are the need of the hour. Dr Rao also brought out that HEMRL is carrying out advanced research for development of viable and economical process for hydrazinum-nitro-formate and ammonium-dinitramide which have potential applications in propellant and explosive formulations as green energetics. He stressed the need for concerted efforts of the scientists in view of the environmental awareness world wide for development of such energetics.

Shri B Bhattacharya, Associate Director, HEMRL and the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Workshop proposed vote of thanks. Shri Bhattacharya elaborated the development of rocket propellants in the last 10 decades in his talk on Evolution of Rocket Propellants from Tippu Sultan to Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

Dr A Sivathanu Pillai, DS and CCR&D (NS & ACE) inaugurated the Campus Wide LAN System installed within High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), Pune, called HEMNET on 22 October 2008. The network developed in-house supports the convergence of data, video and voice requirements. It facilitates scientific data sharing, video surveillance, communication and collaboration across the HEMRL campus.

DESIDOC, Delhi

Defence Scientific information and Documentation Centre (DESIDOC), Delhi organised a programme on Multimedia Technology during 3-7 November 2008. Dr AL Moorthy, Sc G & Director, DESIDOC inaugurated the programme. Shri VK Arora, Director EMPC, IGNOU presented the keynote address. Lectures on various topics related to the recent trends in multimedia technologies, digital audio/visual editing, 2D animation, photo editing, and IPRs issues were covered both by external and in-house faculty.

Twenty-seven participants from different laboratories of DRDO are attended the Course. Smt Shashi Tyagi, Sc F, Addl Director distributed the certificate to the participants. Smt Sumati Sharma, Sc E, was the Course Director, and Shri RK Bhatnagar, TO C, was the Dy Course Director.

DFRL, Mysore.

Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), Mysore, organised a course on Emerging Trends in Human Nutrition: Processors/Nutritionists Quest—Consumer Demand. The course was planned to establish coordination between the food processors/technologists and nutritionists and

provide safe, wholesome, nutritious and health promoting products to the consumers. The course was inaugurated by Dr S Venkat Rao former Deputy Director & HOD, Nutrition & Food Safety Group, CFTRI, Mysore. In his keynote address he enlightened the future challenges in nutrition research and practice, in the context of the present scenario of health in the country. Twenty Scientists from DIPAS, DARL, DIAT, DEBEL, and DFRL and 20 students of PGD in Food Analysis & Quality Assurance conducted hitherto at DFRL and affiliated to the University of Mysore also participated. Seventeen lectures on various topics related to the recent trends in human nutrition were covered both by external and in-house faculty. Dr K Santhanam, former Director, DFRL, Mysore delivered the valedictory address, wherein he highlighted the recent advances in the field of nutrigenomics.

PXE, Chandipur

Proof & Experimental Establishment (PXE), Chandipur, organised a special CEP course on Introductory Course on Armaments and Ballistics during 15-26 September 2008. The objective of the course was to impart training on the basics of armaments and ballistics to the newly recruited Scientists and STAs. Twenty-eight participants attended the course. The topics on projectile aerodynamics, propellant manufacturing process, internal and intermediate ballistics, recoil of guns, inbore dynamics, kinetic energy of projectiles, different weapon systems and explosives were covered during the two week programme. Shri V Anguswamy, Joint Director (Range Support Division) inaugurated the course and Maj Gen Anoop Malhotra, Director, PXE distributed certificates to participants during the Valedictory function. Shri SN Giri, Sci F, was the Course Director.

Proof & Experimental Establishment (PXE), Chandipur, organised four-day special course on Image Processing and Pattern Recognition during 9-12 September 2008. The focus of the course was to develop skills on image processing, binary image analysis, segmentation, region

RCI, Hyderabad

Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad organised an orientation Programme for the newly inducted Scientists during 21-23 October 2008. Dr SK Chaudhuri, OS & Associate Director, RCI inaugurated the Programme, attended by 35 participants. Technology Directors of all Divisions from RCI delivered lectures on missile systems and technology. Shri Rajendra Prasad, Sci G, Director IMST/HRD, RCI presided over the valedictory function.

RCMA, Lucknow

Regional Centre for Military Airworthiness (RCMA), Lucknow, a regional office of CEMILAC, Bangalore, organised a seminar on Design and Certification of Aircraft Hydraulic Accessories on 23 September 2008 at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Lucknow. The Seminar was attended by more than 70 participants from DRDO labs, IAF, HAL, ISRO and students from academia. The seminar had seven technical sessions with topics covering design considerations, testing and certification requirements of hydraulic system accessories of aircraft such as hydraulic power pack, actuators, BSHR and various types of valves.

Shri K Tamilmani, Chief Executive (Airworthiness), CEMILAC, Bangalore addressed the gathering and elaborated upon the concept of airworthiness certification and explained the concurrent certification method to meet the requirements of airworthy quality within the project time frame. Chief Guest, Shri K Umamaheshwar, Managing Director, HAL accessories complex speaking on the occasion bought out the salient points about the important role being played by airworthiness agencies in design evaluation and certification of aircraft accessories. Prof MK Ghosh, IIT, BHU, Varanasi, who was the Keynote

Speaker dwelled on the modeling and simulation of hydraulic systems for different aircrafts and helicopters such as LCA, Jaguar, MiG, Su-30, ALH, Cheetah, etc. In his address he shared his experience on modeling and simulation of hydraulic valves in time and frequency domain using Laplace and Fourier Transforms.

Shri PS Deshmukh, Group Director (Systems), CEMILAC, Bangalore welcomed the dignitaries and Shri Kamesh Goyal, Regional Director, RCMA, Lucknow proposed the vote of thanks.

VRDE, Ahmednagar

Vehicle Research & Development Establishment (VRDE), Ahmednagar, organised a CEP Course on Emerging Trends in Automotive Technologies during 22-26 September 2008. Twenty-eight participants from various DRDO labs attended the course. The aim of the course was to highlight latest engineering practices in automotive field and to enhance the knowledge of individual participants. Eminent faculties from leading industries and educational institutions were invited to deliver lectures on wide range of topics. Dr CL Dhamejani, Director, VRDE gave away course certificates to the participants during the valedictory function.

National Expo at KolkataProof & Experimental Establishment (PXE), Chandipur participated in the 12th National Expo organised by Central Kolkata Science & Culture Organization for Youth during 5-10 September 2008. The theme of this expo was Preparing India as an advanced Nation. PXE displayed various models of armaments like Arjun Tank, sectionized shot 125 mm FSAPDS/T, RDMS, VT Fuse, 76 mm naval ammunition, 120 mm mortar bomb, etc. Latest state-of-the-art instrument facilities of PXE were also shown through photographs. The exhibition was a platform to show the people of India especially students and youth about activities of DRDO and different achievements during the last 50 years. This showcasing is even more appropriate and important in the Golden Jubilee Year of DRDO. PXE received a Trophy and a Certificate of Excellence from the organisers.

PERSONNEL NEWSAppointments

DLRL, Hyderabad

Shri G Boopathy, Sc G, has been appointed Director, DLRL, Hyderabad wef 01 October 2008. He obtained his BE (Hons) in Electronics and Communication Engineering from University of Madras, Chennai, in 1974 and Post-Diploma in Computer Engineering from Karnataka

Board in 1976.

Shri Boopathy started his career from LRDE, Bangalore in 1974 and later in 1979 moved to DLRL as SSO-II. He has served the organisation in various capacities. He has done pioneering work in the areas of communication electronic support systems and electronic VVIP security systems. He spearheaded a number of projects both for the Services and internal security agencies. As the chief designer/project leader, he has successfully designed and developed communication signal surveillance, signal analysis, de-multiplexing and special purpose jammer systems. He also played a pivotal role in the design and development of signature analysis and identification system for fingerprinting of communication signals.

Besides, he was passionately involved in the design, development and production of ground analysis system for offline analysis, de-multiplexing and decoding of standard and non-standard signal formats. One of his dreams fructified as the system Safari which was displayed during Republic Day Parade in 2001.This unique product is the cornerstone that gave much awaited fillip to the R&D activity in homeland security, addressing thus some of the deep concerns of the country in respect of LIC and internal security. He was Chief Designer for COM-ESM entities of the prestigious integrated EW programme Samyukta for the Army. He is also the chief architect of the ongoing programme Divyadrishti and has been responsible for steering the design, development and production activities on concurrent engineering basis for the realisation of

networked and state-of-the-art communication intelligence system. He is the recipient of DRDO Technology Award-1997.

He has to his credit a number of technical reports and papers and is a Fellow of IETE. Presently, as the Director of the laboratory, he is responsible to steadfastly continue to work and steer the laboratory towards fulfilment of its vision to be the centre of excellence in the field of Electronic Warfare besides the promise to empower defence and internal security forces with the state-of-the-art indigenous EW systems and technologies.

Joint Cipher Bureau

Dr Shri Kant, Sci F, has been appointed Coordinator, Joint Cipher Bureau, Department of Defence Research & Development wef 1 October 2008. Prior to this he had been working at the Scientific Analysis Group (SAG), Delhi, since 11 September 1985. Dr Shri Kant

has obtained his PhD in Mathematics from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi in 1981, and in the same year he started his career as Technical Assistant, in Joint Cipher Bureau, Delhi.

During his career he has been pursuing research in subjects like cryptology, communication security, information security, statistical learning, pattern recognition, machine learning, data mining, cluster analysis, etc. He has developed many software packages which are under use for evaluation and grading of crypto products at SAG. He has published more than 50 research papers, is a well known referee for many national and international journals, conference proceedings published from NCS and lEEE. He has been on programme committee panel of conferences like IDEA, ICISS, etc. He has obtained six copyrights and is instrumental in getting one patent jointly with IIT, Delhi. He has guided 22 students of MCA, MSc, MPhil and PhD. He has been awarded DRDO Lab Award, Technology Award, National Science Day and National

Technology Day medal and commendation certificates. He is a visiting faculty at Department of Computer Science, University of Delhi; Amrita Institute of Technology; MCTE, Mhow and also delivered invited talks at various places like IIT, Delhi; IISc, Bangalore, and in various Government organisations.

Promotions

Some DRDO Scientists have been promoted from Sci F to Sci G wef 1 July 2008. Biodata of some of the promotees highlighting their contributions in DRDO have been reported in this issue.

ASL, Hyderabad

Shri S Vara Prasad Rao, Sci G joined DRDO in 1974. He obtained MTech in Plan Design from Osmania University, Hyderabad. Presently he is the Technology Director, Aerospace Mechanisms at Advanced Systems Laboratory, Hyderabad, and is leading

and guiding, a team of 40 officers and staff towards the growth and application of aerospace mechanisms, core competence on various projects and programmes of DRDO.

Through his constant efforts many aerospace mechanisms, explosive ordnance systems and special pyro-devices were indigenously designed, developed, ground tested, qualified and deployed successfully in all major missions of DRDO namely Programme SF&D, Programme AD, Agni, Prithvi, Dhanush, PDV, K-15, Akash, Trishul, Nag, Astra, AET, LCA, and HJT. So far he has deployed 87 working mechanisms and taken up 30 new aerospace mechanisms for new projects. He is a member in 5 National Societies and Executive Member, Aeronautical Society of India; Secretary, Indian National Society for Aerospace Mechanisms, Hyderabad Chapter. He has many DRDO awards to his credit the recent one being DRDO Path Breaking Research Award-2008, DRDO Performance Par Excellence Award-2008, DRDO Agni Award for Excellence and Self-reliance-2006, and Technology Award in Aerospace Mechanisms-2005. His future areas of

interest are in the development of low shock non-explosive mechanisms.

His major contributions and achievements in the field of aerospace mechanisms include low shock stage separation systems, nose cap separation systems, payload separation mechanisms, large booster ignition systems, command destruct systems, launch release mechanisms, impact markers, lid plate ejection mechanisms, latch release mechanisms, canister release mechanisms, WHTV release mechanisms, aircraft spin recovery systems, torpedo release mechanisms, fin unfolding mechanisms and all underwater launch release mechanisms for DRDO. He has imparted user trainings for service core groups for Prithvi and Agni variants. He has carried out technical coordination for the production of 28 qualified explosive ordnance products with six ordnance factories. He is a Member of Ordnance Board as Chief Executive of ordnance products. He has implemented safety guidelines during the integration and deployment of explosive ordnance systems in all aerospace mechanisms as per STEC and external safety audit and range safety requirements and generated safety check lists for hazardous operations.

He has 17 publications and 162 technical reports to his credit. He has also attended two NASA conferences in USA and UK, and published relevant papers in Aerospace Mechanisms in 2004, and 2007.

Shri RK Gupta obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with distinction from Maulana Azad College of Technology, Bhopal and ME (Aerospace) from IISc, Bangalore. He joined as Research Assistant, AR&DB project at the Aerospace Department, IISc, Bangalore. He joined DRDL, Hyderabad in 1985. He

worked in Directorate of Advanced Composites, DRDL and was responsible for design of composite structures for IGMDP. His significant contributions include re-entry

vehicle structure design for all Agni configurations, all composite airframe for Nag, composite canister for PJ-08 and variable thickness Radome for LCA. In 2002, he founded the Aerospace Systems Design and Analysis Group (ASDAG) at ASL, Hyderabad. ASDAG is mainly responsible for aerospace system studies pertaining to structures, aerodynamics, heat-transfer and computational fluid dynamics. Presently he is Technology Director, ASDAG, and Project Director, AS.

He is currently pursuing doctorate in the area of non-linear vibrations at JNTU, Hyderabad. He is a member of ISAMPE, INSARM and MRSI and has published over 10 papers in national conferences and international journals. He has received DRDO Award-1989 for design of RVS, DRDO Award -1996 for NAG airframe design, DRDO Agni Excellence Award for Self-Reliance-2005 for successful development of Flex-nozzle based, long duration Solid Rocket Motor, and the DRDO Path-breaking Research/Outstanding Technology Development Award-2007 for the successful Agni A3 mission.

Shri Pradeep J Thakar obtained his BTech and MTech in Mechanical Engineering from College of Engineering, Pune

and IIT, Bombay, respectively. He joined DRDL, Hyderabad in 1982 and since then has been working on composite product development for missiles. His areas of interests are development of composite products for aerospace/missiles, NDT of composites, and QA of composite products.

Presently Head, Composite Rocket Motor Casing (CRMC) Group, Directorate of CPDC, ASL and is actively working on development of composite rocket motor casings for Agni variants. Prior to this he has worked on development of flex nozzle system for SFD Programme for which he was awarded Team Leader Award for establishment of technology and facility at ASL in 2002-03. Earlier he has worked in Directorate of CPDC as QA In-charge and established facilities of NDT, Material Testing and QA. He has received National Science Day Commendation at ASL.

He is member of various professional bodies and is presently Secretary, ISAMPE, Hyderabad Chapter.

Higher Qualification Achieved

Shri Jayathilakan K, Sci C, DFRL, Mysore has been awarded PhD in Chemistry from University of Mysore, for the thesis entitled, Studies on the Factors Influencing the Stability of Processed Meat and Meat Products under the guidance of Dr GK Sharma, Sci F of DFRL, Mysore.

The Orissa State Disaster Mitigation Authority (OSDMA) felicitated Maj Gen Anoop Malhotra, Director, PXE by awarding a Trophy on 29 October 2008 on the occasion of the Orissa Disaster Preparedness Day and the National Day for disaster reduction for magnanimous support and outstanding contribution of PXE in flood relief operation-2008.

International Cooperation

An Israeli-team lead by Col Eytan Eshel, Head, Electronics & EW Division, MAFAT, Ministry of Defence, Israel visited on 30 October 2008. C4I Working Group of Indo-Israeli Management Council (I2MC) held its third meeting at ELSEC Campus of DLRL. Shri BN Gajbhiye, Director of International Cooperation, attended the meeting. Dr R Sreehari Rao, CC R&D (ECS), Shri RC Agarwal, Director, DEAL, Delhi, and Shri GS Malik, Director of ECS, DRDO HQrs joined the meeting during summing up session. RAISING DAY

CFEES, Delhi

Centre for Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES), Delhi, celebrated Raising Day on 16 October 2008. Dr A Sivathanu Pillai, DS and CC R&D (NS&ACE) graced the occasion as Chief Guest and gave away the President’s Fire Service Medal for Distinguished Service, Fire Service Medal for Meritorious Service and DRDO Lab-level Awards to the recipients. Other dignitaries present on the occasion were Dr BR Gandhe, Director of Armaments; Dr Manas K Mandal, Director, DIPR; Dr Arun Kumar, Director, RAC, and Shri RS Gauba, Additional Director, Directorate of Armaments.

DIPAS, Delhi

Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), Delhi, celebrated Raising Day on 23 September 2008. Dr VK Vijyan, Director, Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, Delhi, inaugurated the programme and distributed the DRDO Lab Awards. Dr K Shekar, CC R&D (Implementation), dignitaries from DRDO HQrs and Directors of Delhi-based labs/estts also graced the occasion. Dr G IIavazhagan, Director, DIPAS in his welcome remarks spoke about the achievements of the Institute and gave a brief about its future programmes. A colourful cultural programme by DIPAS fraternity was presented on this occasion.

MTRDC, Bangalore

Microwave Tube Research & Development Centre (MTRDC), Bangalore, celebrated its 24th Foundation Day on 30 October 2008 with enthusiasm and fervour. Dr Lalit Kumar, Director, MTRDC, in his welcome address

briefed about the ongoing and the future activities of the establishment and expressed satisfaction on the overall progress of the establishment. Shri S Varadarajan, Director, LRDE, Bangalore, was the Chief Guest and delivered the Keynote Address and released MTRDC Souvenir 2008.

As part of Golden Jubilee celebrations of DRDO, the Centre felicitated Dr MD Rajnarayan, founder Director, MTRDC, Bangalore, on his receiving VASVIK Award. In his presidential address he lauded the effort of MTRDC and was happy to note that a number of tubes have reached production stage. Also, on this occasion, various Lab-level Awards namely Scientist of the Year Award, Technology Group Awards, DRTC Award, Cash Awards, Performance Excellence Award for Admin and Allied Categories, Best Paper Award, and Sports Awards, etc., were given away. Shri N Sitaram, former CC R&D (ECS) & DS, Directors and dignitaries from different labs/estts, and families of MTRDC graced the occasion. Dr KS Bhat, Addl. Director proposed the vote of thanks.

PXE, Chandipur

Proof & Experimental Establishment (PXE), Chandipur, celebrated its 114th Raising Day on 7 November 2008 with fanfare and gaiety. Maj Gen Anoop Malhotra, Director, PXE inaugurated the celebrations. AVM NN Shah (Retd), Ex-Director, PXE was the Chief Guest, while Dr BR Gandhe, Director of Armaments, and Shri SP Dash, Director, ITR graced the occasion. One hundred-fifty retired employees attended the morning session with their families. Colourful cultural evening was also organized for all members of Proof Family at DRDO Auditorium. The Director and other VIP dignitaries gave away various Lab Awards, Cash Awards and 25 years Service Mementos to PXE employees.

PATENTS GRANTEDDMRL, Hyderabad

A Patent on ‘A process for production of metal matrix composite tubes’ (Patent No.215561) has been granted by the Indian Patent Office, New Delhi. Dr K Siva Kumar, Sci F and Dr T Bala Krishna Bhat, Sci G of DMRL have been named as the inventors.

A Patent on ‘An apparatus and process for manufacturing dental alloy buttons and other castings’ (Patent No.219885) has been granted by the Indian Patent Office, New Delhi. Shri Niranjan Das, Sci G of DMRL has been named as the inventor.

Dussehra Flower ShowDefence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), Mysore, was awarded a Rolling Trophy and Four First Prizes in the Ornamental Garden Category for DFRL Premises, VVIP Cottage, Scientist Hostel and Director’s Residence during Dussehra Garden Show organised by the Government of Karnataka, Dept. of Horticulture and District Horticulture Society, during 26 September-10 October 2008. Prizes were given away by Director, Dept. of Horticulture, Govt of Karnataka.

VISITS TO DRDO LABS/ESSTTS

South Zone DRDO Carrom Tournament

The South Zone DRDO Carrom Tournament was held at Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE), Chennai during 17-19 September 2008. Shri L Narayana was declared Champion in Veteran Event while Shri Suresh Kumar and Shri Sagaya were runners-up in the Open Double Event. DFRL Team bagged Runners-up Award in the team event.

Intra-zonal Chess Tournament for West Zone

Intra-zonal Chess Tournament for West Zone DRDO labs was held at Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL), Ambernath, during 25-26 September 2008. Twenty-one participants from various labs participated in the tournament. VRDE, Ahmednagar was the winner and HEMRL, Pune, was the runner-up in the tournament. The top 10 participants of this tournament were qualified for participating in DRDO National Inter-zonal Chess Tournament held at Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), Kochi during 16-17 October 2008.
