Vandag staan dié leerderstal op 263. “Ons leerders se erge verstandeli- ke gestremdheid en hul hoë vlak van opvoedkundige, mediese en maat- skaplike ondersteuning laat ons nie toe om die onderwysers-leerder ratio meer as 16 per klas te hê nie,” sê skoolhoof dr. Joaline Lackay. Die skool het laat in 1983 geskuif na die Ascension Anglikaanse Kerk in Klein Drakensteinweg en is van- dag geleë in Pienaarstraat in Paarl- Oos. Die eerste skoolhoof was Shirley Phillipus (1986 tot 1987) en sedert Phillipus se uittrede het die huidige hoof, dr. Lackay, die leisels oorge- neem. Ligstraal Skool volg ’n aangepaste kurrikulum wat gegrond is op die Kurrikulum Assesseringbeleidsver- klaring in die grondslagfase wat in- sluit wiskunde, huistaal en lewens- vaardighede. Die skool het ook ’n ondersteu- ningspan wat insluit ’n arbeidstera- peut, verpleegkundige, skoolsiel- kundige, en musiekterapeut. Vroeër vanjaar kon die skool ook feesvier met die uitbreiding van vier nuwe klaskamers. Voor dit was daar gebruik gemaak van klaskamers by LK Zeeman Primêre Skool. Volgens Lackay word daar reeds hard gewerk aan nóg twee nuwe klas- kamers, wat in 2014 voltooi sal word. Sy sê haar drome sluit onder meer in dat die skool eendag as ’n “bron- ne”-sentrum moet dien wat ander skole ook kan help. Man dies vigilante styleAman fromMbekweniwas killed for allegedlystealing a vehicle.According to Sgt Nceba Vanqa, police

spokesperson, police attended to a complaintof community assault in Project 2, Mbekweni.On their arrival they found the victim still

alive, lying on his back inside in a shack be-longing to one of the suspects. He had openwoundsonbotharmsandhis right leg, andwascovered in blood.

Hewas transported to Paarl Hospital but lat-er died as a result of head injuries.It is alleged that the victim was believed to

have stolenoneof the suspect’s vehicle thepre-vious week. The suspect went to look for thevictim and brought him to his housewhere he,his wife and another guy allegedly assaultedhimwithagolfclubandaknobkierieandthrewboiling water over him. Two suspects havebeen arrested. A third is still at large.

Community wellnesscentre to open in PaarlA Community Wellness Centre (CWC),will soon be opening its doors in Paarl.

CWC will provide a facility which offerstreatment for drug and alcohol addiction onanout-patientbasis.Theserviceswillbeavail-able to the less fortunate individualswho des-peratelyneedaddiction therapybutcannotaf-ford to pay for it.“We have identified the Paarl district as a

startingpointasthereisverylittle tonoassist-anceavailable in thatarea.The treatmentwillbe offered for free, bar aminimal registrationfee. TheCWCwill provide service to individu-als that would otherwise not have access tosucha comprehensive treatment programme,giving both the afflicted and South Africahope for the future,” saysDrMartinClaassen,public relations and market-ing manager.Claassen says that over the

past couple of years, the busi-ness sector has identified thatsubstance abuse and addic-tion is a reality among theworkforce; one in every threeemployees fail a drug tests.The impact is dramatic andthe risks include that of an oc-cupational hazard, securityas well as costing the compa-ny financial losses due to lowproduction, absenteeism and poor quality ofworkmanship.Onaverage, themajorityof theworkforce is made up of the lower incomegroup.When looking at the latest addiction statis-

tics forCapeTownandsurrounds, they revealthat the current spike in substance abuse isamong the age group of 20 to 24 years. “Theseare the young individuals that start off in theworkforce.Targeting themforpotential treat-

) assist clients with transport.The CWC is 100% reliant

Christmas celebrations for childrenVal de Vie Estate held theirfourth annual children’sChristmas party at TCNew-man Hospital on 5 Decem-ber.

The party was thoroughlyenjoyedbytheyoungpatients,bringing some festive cheerand merriment to the clinic.Val de Vie is deeply gratefulto its loyal service providerswho helped to make the eventpossible. Drakenstein Gazettehad a little peep to see how thechildren all enjoyed them.

These children have thoroughly enjoyed themselves playing with the bal-loons.
