1/ Bursheba Fristoe, sister of Frances (Fristoe) Twyman, married Colonel Henry Washington Younger. These were the parents of the famous, fearless four Younger boys, confreres of the James boys. Jim and Cole Younger were members of Quantrell's guerrilla band. Cole, Jim and Bob were members of the James boys' gang, 2/ Thomas Noland and his wife, Rowena (Twyman) Noland—great-great granddaughter of William Twyman, Sr. and Winifred Cowherd—hid Jesse James at their homeplace in Saguache, Colorado. Then Thomas Noland's brother, Oen Edgar Noland, hid Jesse James at his place in Mancos, Colorado. Then the Sheeks—Mrs. Lolla (Kutch) Noland, wife of Oen Edgar Noland, was the daughter of Margaret (Sheek) Thompson—hid Jesse James in the La Plata Mountains adjacent to Oen Noland's place in Mancos, Colorado.

Captain Reuben Twyman (1758-1839)

Captain Reuben Twyman ("Captain" was a courtesy t i t l e ) o f f i c i a l l y held the t i t l e of Ensign. He fought in the Revolutionary War under the command of General Lafayette. After the war, Lafayette visited members of his old command, Captain Reuben Twyman among them, who lived in Woodford County, Kentucky. After the War, Captain Twyman moved to Woodford County from Madison County, Virginia. Captain Twyman was the son of William Twyman, Sr. and Winifred Cowherd of Madison County, Virginia. He was the great-grandson of George Twyman I, the immigrant, and his wife, Catherine Montague,of Middlesex County, Virginia.

Captain Twyman was a rich man. He owned land in Woodford County, Pike County, and probably also in other counties. He built a log cabin on his land located near Versailles, Kentucky. Across the road (Midway Pike) lived his cousins, the Bufords, at Bosque Bpnita. (At one time the Bufords had the finest racing stable in the world.)

By some accounts, Captain Twyman's son, Joel Twyman, built the house, Dunvegan. on the site of Reuben's f i r s t dwelling place. Dunvegan was the name given the mansion by a recent owner, Mr. McLeod, sometime before 1950. A succession of owners vandalized the mansion which originally resembled the great, pillared mansions of Natchez, Mississippi. Dunvegan is now a racehorse farm. Captain Twyman was buried near the house.

As recently as 1950, heirs of Captain Twyman were seeking compensation for several thousand acres of coal-bearing lands allegedly stolen by the Eastern Coal Company in 1907.

According to Captain Twyman's great-granddaughter, Rowena (Twyman) Noland, Captain Twyman at one time owned more than one hundred slaves.

Captain and Mrs. Twyman (nee Margaret Griffin) had six children: Elizabeth married Simeon Buford, Jr.; Mildred married Buford Twyman, son of George and Ann Twyman, of Virginia; Simeon married Mary Walker Yancey; Joel married Margaret Kirtley Buford; George married Eliza Crutcher; Colby Cowherd married Ellen Eliza Stone.

Simeon Twyman (1794-1846) Jackson County, Missouri

Simeon Twyman, a son of Captain Reuben Twyman, was married to Mary Walker Yancey. She was the daughter of Cantain Robert Yancey (of the Revolutionary War) and Betty Holliday or Holloway. She was the granddaughter of Lewis Davis Yancey, and the great-granddaughter of Philemon Kavanaugh of Ireland and Culpeper County, Virginia. In later years Simeon and Mary Walker Twyman moved to Jackson County, Missouri. Their children, born and reared in Wood­ford County, Kentucky, were: William Henry Twyman; Margaret (Twyman) Bryant; Simeon Walker Twyman (called "Walker"); Clifton Twyman; Mary Twyman; Martha (Twyman) Nowland; Venetia (Twyman) Wallace; and Robert Yancey Twyman.

Rowena (Twyman) Noland, granddaughter of Simeon Twyman, wrote a letter in the 1930's to her daughter, Daisy (Noland) Lockett, which read in p a r t as follows

I am starting to jot a few things down as I think of them. F i r s t , i t was Dr. Belt who came and asked me i f I was W. H. Twyman's daughter in the Park View Hotel (Kansas City, Missouri). We were at the breakfast table. He said he was Dr. Belt and knew my father. He said my father (William Henry Twyman) sent for—went when grandfather (Simeon Twyman) was i l l . Do you remember my t e l l i n g you that my father said i t was the darkest of nights and i t was a country road, through timber, and he said he could only t e l l where he was by the flashes of lightning?

When there, the doctor told Grandfather Twyman he had only a short time to li v e — h e was going to die. And Grandfather Twyman said, "I don't think so, Doctor," but he told my father what he wanted him to do. Take care of a l l the family which was Uncle Walker, Aunt Venetia, Aunt Martha and Mary Emily—Aunt Margaret was married. Then there was Uncle Robert. I am not sure i f Uncle C l i f f was married. But take care of a l l of them who weren't married u n t i l they were, and always to look after or care for Uncle Walker as he was a crinnle, one leg a l i t t l e shorter than the other. The nurse dronred him when he was l i t t l e ; and Aunt Venetia t e l l i n g me and Brother (John Hale Twyman) that she, the nurse, did i t . He (William Henry Twyman) sent Aunt Venetia and Aunt Mary Emily to a private school in Independence (Missouri) and boarded them at J. W. Buchanan's.

Benjamin Twyman, of Canterbury, England, in a letter to Samuel Rogers Twyman, of Virginia, in 1910, stated that the Twymans came to England with the Con­queror and that they were knights. He sent them crest and motto and stated that we are undoubtedly descended from the Canterbury branch of Twymans. They were s i l k merchants.

Mary E. Twyman married John Buford. Two children: Clarence Buford died in infancy; Rowena May Buford was born November 26, 1883. She was married to Harley L. Ferguson January 18, 1914. Mr. Ferguson died October 9, 1945.

John Hale Twyman married Eva Wilson. Two children: Irene Twyman was born October 16, 1893. She married P. C. Hain April 28, 1917, Baltimore, Maryland. They had a son, Roland Hain, who married and had one son, Wilson Hain, born August 26, 194l. P. C. Hain died October 20, 1931. Mrs. Hain married, second­l y , Kent Owens. He died March 6, 1946.

Ede Mae Twyman, born April 1, 1895, married P h i l i p Brown in 1917. They had one son, Philip Brown, Jr., who was born December 25, 1918.

William Henry Twyman, son of Simeon, of Reuben, of William 1st, was born in Versailles, Kentucky, 1824 and died 1874, married Sarah Hale, of Independence, Missouri. Sarah (Hale) Twyman was born 1839 and died 1920. She was the daughter of Bennett Hale, born 1808, in Somerset, Kentucky.

William Henry6 Twyman (Simeon5; Reuben*; William Sr. 3; George2; George1) was born in 1824 and died on March 14, 1874. On March 14, 1855 he married Sarah Elizabeth Hale (Hail) who was born on January 15, 183°. and died on February _ 16 1920 Sarah Elizabeth (Hale) Twyman was the daughter of Bennett Hale (Hail) who probably w*s the son of Stephen Hail, Sr. and Molly Moody; son of Stephen Hail, Sr. and Nancy Harrison; son of Francis Hail and Adara : son of John Haile and Mary Edmondson; son of Captain Richard Haile, of Essex County, Virginia. Before reaching adulthood, Bennett Hail began to spell "Hail," "Hale." Bennett Hale was born in l8o8 i n Somerset, Kentucky.

The Haile and Edmondson families were prominent families of Essex County, Vi r ­ginia. In 1604 Captain Richard Hail patented a grant of land in Essex County. It is on this property that the historic house, Beaver's H i l l , was constructed in 1818 by his descendant, Captain Robert Gaines Haile. Sarah Elizabeth Twy­man's sister, Nancy A. Hale, married Perry Brock, prominent m i l l owner of In­dependence, Missouri.

William Henry Twyman and Sarah Elizabeth (Hale) Twyman were the parents of Warren Yancey TwymanRowena Rosalie (Twyman) Noland; Willie Twyman; Mary Emily (Molly) (Twyman) Buford; Georgie (Twyman) Kerby; John Hale Twyman; Ida May (Twyman) Robbins.

William Henry Twyman was a distinguished man, a resourceful man. He was graduated from the University of Kentucky at Louisville. He was a Greek and Latin scholar. In 1849 he joined the Gold Rush, travelling overland. On his return he sailed around Cape Horn. He returned a rich man. He bought a famr for his brother, Simeon Walker, and sent his sisters, Margaret and Martha, to boarding schools.

William Henry Twyman was a quiet, rroud man. On those rare occasions when the table manners of his eldest child, Rowena Rosalie, displeased him, he would say l i t t l e but would tap her gently on top of the head with the handle of his table'knife. Once she asked him i f the Twyman family was important. He nodded his assent, but added that the great family in her background was the Yancey family. The maiden name of his mother was Mary Walker Yancey.

William Henry Twyman died when Rowena Rosalie, the eldest child, was fourteen. Her brother, John Hale Twvman, was not quite four years old. A guardian was appointed for him—Mr. John Gallatin Paxton. Not long after Twyman died, Bennett Hale, Rowena's grandfather, purchased a pair of shoes for her. On es­pying them, she cried out angrily, "My father never would have l e t me wear those clodhoppers'" Bennett Hale, infuriated, slapped her.

The Families of Kavanaugh. Yancey and Twyman

Murca(d)h had a grandson, Dermott McMurrough, King of Leinster, at the time of the f i r s t Norman-English invasion. A descendant, Dermod na-Ghall, had a son, Donal Gaomhanach, ancestor of O'Caomhanaighe ("Kavanagh"), "Cavaignac" in France. Dermod na-nGhall, son of Donoch MacMorough, died in 1171. He was the fifty-eighth Christian King of Leinster. His son was Donal Caomhanach a quo O'Caomhanaighe—Donal Kavanagh. Next was his son, Donal Oge, Prince of Leinster, who had a son, Muirceartach, Prince of Leinster. He had a son, Muris, Muirceartach, son of Muiris, Prince of Leinster, was slain in 1307. He was followed by his son, Art Mor Kavanagh, Prince of Leinster, l i v i n g in 1361. He had a son, Art Oge, Prince of Leinster, who was succeeded by his son, Diarmuid Lamhdearg ("Red Hand"), Lord of Leinster. His son, Diarmuid, had a son, Art Buidhe, county Carlow, Lord of Leinster. Cahir MacArt, his son, Lord of Leinster, was created "Baron Ballyanne" i n 1554. He was followed by his son, Brian, Lord of Leinster, who had a son, Morgan, Lord of Leinster, who died i n 1636.

In 1688 King James II of England was forced to flee to France where Louis XIV installed him at the Palace of St. Germain. Subsequently, in 1690, the Catholic Irish Army which King James succeeded in raising was defeated at the battle of the Boyne by the army of the king's son-in-laW, Prince William of Orange. Several membersof the Kavanaugh family fled to France with King James I I . One Kavanaugh went to Prussia. "He seemed to have ideas and convictions peculiarly his own, and was a conspicuous and noted personage of said Court who readily made known his position on any question, or his objectives to any measure, somewhat a family characteristic to this day." l/

Several descendants of the Kavanaugh ("Cavaignac") family distinguished them­selves in France, including General Eugene Cavaignac (1802-1857) who fought in Algeria, was minister of war and who led his troops to victory in the Revolution of 1848 in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. He was briefly head of the government of France. Subsequently he was defeated for the presidency by Louis Napoleon.

Eugene Cavaignac, son of General Eugene Cavaignac, was one of the ministers of the government of France and a principal supporter of Alfred Dreyfus in the celebrated Dreyfus a f f a i r which came to an end in 1906 when Dreyfus was found not guilty of being a traitor. Eugene Cavaignac was a nephew of Godefroy Cavaignac who was the leader of the Republican Party of France in 1830.

Morgan Kavanaugh, Lord of Leinster, was the ancestor of Philemon and Charles Kavanaugh, brothers, who emigrated to Virginia about 1710 where they settled on their estate of 40,000 acres in Essex County. Allegedly the estate was a crown grant. The third brother emigrated to England. He was the ancestor of General Kavanaugh who commanded Queen Victoria's army in India, The present

Dukes of Leinster carry on the Kavanaugh name.

Mildred, daughter of Philemon Kavanaugh, he came the wife of Lewis Davis Yancey who had settled about 1910 in Culpeper County, Virginia. Their son, Captain Robert Yancey, was the father of Mary Walker Yancey who became the wife of Simeon5 Twyman (Reuben^; William-5; George2; and George1, the immigrant fronr England who founded the Twyman family of America). Lewis Davis Yancey married, secondly, the widow Winifred Nalle who had two daughters (Nalle).

Lewis Davis Yancey (died 1784) was a descendant of one of five brothers, Welshmen, who accompanied S i r William Berkeley to Virginia. (In l64l Berkeley was the governor of Virginia.) The five brothers were: Charles Yancey; William Yancey; Joel Yancey; Robert Yancey; and John Yancey. Lewis Davis and Mildred (Kavanaugh) Yancey had nine children. Robert Yancey, their son mentioned above—father-in-law of Simeon Twyman—was a captain in the e l i t e First Continental Dragoons in the Revolutionary War. He was an Original Member of the Society of the Cincinnati which was founded in 1783. Ibe roster of the Society is made up of descendants of officer personnel who served in the Revolutionary War. George Washington was the f i r s t president of the Society of the Cincinnati in the United States. In France the G-eneral, the Marquis de Lafayette, was the f i r s t head of the Society, the existence of which in France was sanctioned in 1783 by King Louis XVI.

John Yancey, son of Lewis Davis Yancey, was the father of Lieutenant Layton Yancey who also served in the prestigious First Continental Dragoons in the Revolutionary War. He married Fanny Lewis. Major James Yancey, son of Lewis Davis and Mildred (Kavanaugh) Yancey, also fought in the Revolutionary War, serving under General Greene. Leighton (also Layton) Yancey was the grandfather of William Lowndes Yancey, a United States senator, the great antebellum patriot known as the "Orator of Secession" and "f i r e eater." William Lowndes Yancey was the son of Benjamin Gudowrth Yancey and Caroline Bird, daughter of Colonel William Bird of the Ariary, Warren County, Georgia. Richard Yancey, son of Lewis Davis and Mildred (Kavanaugh) Yancey, was the ancestor of John M Palmer, unsuccessful candidate of the Gold Wing Party for president in I896. Palmer's opponent was the renowned William Jennings Bryan.

Captain Robert Yancey's cousin, Captain Charles Yancey, of Louisa County, Virginia, and Mrs. Yancey (nee Mary Crawford), were the grandparents of Frank Armstrong Crawford, a Southern aristocrat. Frank Crawford, daughter of Rhcda Yancey and Rev. William Crawford, of Mobile, Alabama, became the second wife of her f i r s t cousin twice removed, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. Commodore Vanderbilt (1794-1877) was the son of Cornelius Vanderbilt and Phebe (Hand) Vanderbilt. Frank (Crawford) Vanderbilt was a great-granddaughter of Samuel Hand, brother of Phebe (Hand) Vanderbilt. The American ancestor of the Vanderbilts was the immigrant, Jan Aertsen van der b i l t who emigrated from Holland in I65O. Until Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt emerged on the scene, the Vanderbilts had been poor uneducated farmers on Staten Island, New York.

Although not well educated, Commodore Vanderbilt was a genius in financial a f f a i r s . He was a giant in the shipping industry of America and controlled the nation's major railroads. He became one of the richest men in the world. His f i r s t wife was his f i r s t cousin, Sophia Johnson, a simple country woman. The couple had thirteen children. Sophia Vanderbilt died in 1868. In 1869 Vanderbilt and Frank Crawford (I838-I885) were married. The Vanderbilts lived at No. 10 Washington Square, New York City.

Frank Vanderbilt, her cousin, Mrs. Amelia Townsend McTyeire, and Mrs. McTyeire's husband, Bishop Holland N. McTyeire,'had'been interested over a long period of time in founding a great university in the South. They enlisted the support of Commodore Vanderbilt who made available the sum of $500,000 to build and endow the university at Nashville, Tennessee, which bears his name.

Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt was the great-grandfather of Consuelo Vanderbilt who became the wife of the 9th Duke of Marlborough. The Duke and Duchess of Marlborough were the grandparents of the 11th Duke, John George Vanderbilt Henry Spencer-Churchill. He and the Princess of Wales (the former Lady Diana Spencer) are cousins, both being descended from Lord Spencer.

Rev. Robert Yancey, of Tillotson Parish, Virginia, brother of Captain Charles Yancey, was ordained an Episcopal Priest in 1868 by the Bishop of London. Yancey married Ann Crawford. Their son. Major Charles Yancey, born in 1770, was hailed by Thomas Jefferson as the "Wheelhorse of Democracy." Yancey's friends and neighbors referred to Yancey as the "Duke of Buckingham."

Bartlett Yancey was governor of North Carolina where a county was named for him.

Robert Leighton, an ancestor of the Yancey brothers of Virginia, was a famous Scotch divine. King Charles I ordered that Leighton's tongue be cut out because Leighton, a free thinker, was none too circumspect in making known his sentiments on religion and p o l i t i c s . The name, "Leighton" (also "Iayton") has been given to a number of Yancey descendants.

In her book, The Vanishing Virginian, Rebecca Yancey Williams wrote of William Radford, a cousin of her great-grandfather, Joel Yancey, of Bedford County, Virginia, as follows:

William Radford had just escaped being one of the casualties of the Revolution, for he had equipped a number of privateers to fight the British and had been captured and confined in the Tower of London. But through the influence of friends and relatives in England, he was freed from the tower and made his way to France where Marie Antoinette assisted him to return to America. Ever an adventurous person, i t was he who had persuaded his young cousin, my great-grandfather, to come with him to Bedford County, Virginia.

Captain Robert ("Bob") Yancey (died 1929), the father of Rebecca Yancey Williams, was greatly beloved by his fellow townspeople of Lynchburg, Bedford County, Virginia, where he was the "Commonwealth's Attorney" for thirty-five years'. Among his closest friends was his cousin, Chiswell ("Chilly") Dabney Langhorne, the father of Lady Nancy Astor. A graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, Captain Yancey's military bearing and courtly manner epitomized the Southern aristocrat.

Captain Robert Yancey (1750-1819), father-in-law of Simeon Twyman, moved from Culpeper County, Virginia, to Woodford County, Kentucky, shortly after 1791. He and his wife, Betty Yancey, were the parents of Katherine Yancey who married John Snyder; Martha Yancey, who married Robert Campbell and moved to Missi­ssippi; George Yancey; Nancy Yancey who married George Settles; Mary Walker Yancey who married Simeon Twyman; Mildred Yancey who died at the Gait House, Louisville, Kentucky, where she, a school g i r l , was a guest; Charles Yancey; and Robert Yancey, Jr.

Arlington

Arlington, the home of the Yancey family, located in Culpeper County, Vi r ­ginia, was bu i l t about 1840.

A square, red brick house of Federal design, Arlington, located on Rt. 685 between Catalpa and Brandy, has English basement and two floors. The hand-pressed brick is laid in Flemish bond. The roof is hipped, and there are three chimneys and a Roman Revival portico. A two-flight stairway has walnut r a i l , newel and balustrades. There are old mantels, wide floorboards, and 15-foot ceilings.

Built on a portion of the Charles Kavanaugh grant, the house stands on a tract that remained in the Yancey family from 1710 u n t i l 1939. Seven generations of Yanceys l i e buried in the adjacent private cemetery.

Frank Phi l l i p s Lockett, eldest of the four children of William and Daisy (Noland) Lockett, served in World War I. He was a top sergeant. He was graduated from the University of Southern California where he was president of the law school student body. He was a member of Theta Psi which subse­quently was a f f i l i a t e d with Chi Phi, a national men's fraternity. Lockett played l e f t half-back on the USC football team—Coach "Gloomy" Gus Henderson's "ace-in-the-hole." Frank Lockett was an investment counselor and was active in the f i e l d of residential planning and construction. At one stage of his career he was the leading stock and bond salesman on Wall Street, New York, New York.

Peter Paul Lockett, the son of Frank Phillips Lockett and his second wife, Gladys Buechner, was graduated from the University of California at Berkeley. He received his Master's degree in accounting in 1958 from the University of Southern California. He earned his DBA degree at the University of Southern California in 1973. Dr. Lockett is Professor of Accounting, California State Univeristy, Los Angeles, California.

William Crittenden Lockett and Nancy Jean (Lockett) Lindsay, children of Frank Phillips Lockett and his third wife, Jean Bihler, were both graduated from San Diego State College, San Diego, California. Mrs. Lindsay was af­f i l i a t e d with Pi Beta Phi sorority. Mrs. Lindsay earned her Master's degree at Boston College, Boston, Massachusetts. Charles Cornelius Lockett, younger brother of Frank Phillips Lockett, was graduated from Stanford University, California, where he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. He also attended the Sorbonne. Charles Lockett engaged in petroleum exploration and development. He played an important role in the founding of one of the major U.S. o i l companies of the day, the Signal Oil Company, based in Los Angeles, California.

Tne writing of Rowena Ruth Lockett (Mrs. George Hugh Banning) was featured in the Gyroscope, an important literary quarterly of the 1930's, was included

poetry, < a Magazine of Verse (Chicago), and was starred, but not published, in 0 Brien s Best Short Stories of 1931. Mrs. Banning was named the poet of her Stanford University Class of 1931. Within a few months, she had organized the f i r s t Voters Roosevelt-for-President Clubs of Southern California which became the Young Democratic Clubs of California after the 1932 Democratic' National Convention, she becoming their national committewoman. In 1933 she was selected the national vice-president of the Young Democratic Clubs of America. President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed her the Recorder of the General Land Office in Washington, D.G., the youngest person known to have been appointed to that office. She l e f t Washington in 1935 to organize the National Youth Administration for Southern California. Mrs. Banning was appointed a Kentucky Colonel by the governor of Kentucky.

Susan Crutchfield, only child of Ruth Lockett and her f i r s t husband, Henry C Ramsey, was graduated from Pine Manor, spent her junior year at Reid Hall i n ' Paris, and was graduated from George Washington University in 1964 Having received her MA i n psychology in the United States, she completed her PhD in neurophysiology at Aston University in England. Her articles appear in two books on visual evoked potentials. Her daughters, Pamela and Ashley Crutchfield were graduated from Foxcroft, Virginia. In 1988 Pamela Crutchfield was a junior at Scriops College, Paris; Ashley Crutchfield was a sophmore at UCLA.

William Twyman Lockett, youngest of the four children of the late William Crittenden and Daisy (Noland) Lockett, was graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles; member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, captain of the track team in 1932; in 1931, mid-season, he was clocked as the fastest 100-yard-dash man in the western United States. He held the UCLA record for the 220-yard dash. William Lockett, an international economist and lecturer, retired in 1972. He i s a member of the Society of the Cincinnati.

Ms. Ann Lockett and Ellen Lockett, daughters of William Twyman Lockett, w-re both graduated from the University of California at Berkeley—Ellen Lockett attended Wellesley College for the freshman and sonhmore years. Ann Lockett earned her MA at San Jose State College, California. She is a librarian. Ellen Lockett is a computer specialist. Daniel Lockett Labovitz, elder son of Ms Ann Lockett and Jeffrey Niles Labovitz, was graduated magnum cum laude from Harvard University in 1987. Matthew Twyman Labovitz, Daniel's younger brother, was a sophmore at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1988.

Harry Leslie Noland, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edgar B. Noland, i s one of the most prominent attorneys in California. He heads up the prestigious law firm Noland, Hamerly, Etienne & Hoss, based in Salinas, California. In years gone by Mr. Noland was the youngest d i s t r i c t attorney (Monterey County) in Califor­nia. At Stanford University, from which he was graduated, Mr. Noland was a prominent figure on campus. Mr. Noland is one of the outstanding citizens of

Salinas, California, where for a great many years he has been active in divers community a c t i v i t i e s .

Cynthia Jean Noland, daughter of the Harry Leslie Nolands, is married to Harry Siegfried, co-owner of a publishing firm. The Siegfrieds reside in a suburb of Zurich, Switzerland. In 1982 their daughter, Anita, was one of the top professional ice skaters in Europe; Victor Siegfried, brother of Anita, was married and was associated with an architectural firm.

Patricia Ann, Cynthia Jean's sister, is married to Anton InderMtzen who obtained an AB in geography from Stanford University; MA from USC, and a PhD from Stanford in oceanography. In 1982 Mr. Inderbitzen was associated with the National Science Foundation in Maryland. In that same year the four Inderbitzen children were receiving their educations: Dan, a senior at the University of West Virginia; Heidi, Wake Forest University, North Carolina; Becky, Duke University; Jennifer, high school.

Mrs. Charles Stewart Gillmor (nee Myrtle Evelyn Noland), daughter of the late* Mr. and Mrs. Edgar B. Noland, attended Lindenwood College, St. Charles, Missouri and Emerson College of Oratory in Boston, Massachusetts. The late Dr. Charles Stewart Gillmor was the rheumatism and a r t h r i t i s specialist in Kansas City. Missouri.

At the onset of World War I I , Mrs. Gillmor was selected by General Bethea (Commanding General of Army Service Forces Eight Service Command) to be in charge of the Red Cross Central Texas Camp and Hospital Council. I t included nineteen counties in Texas—the biggest army hospital in the United States McCloskey General Hospital in Temple, Texas—North Camp Hood, South Camp Hood and two airfi e l d s at Bryan and Waco, Texas. Mrs. Gillmor has been president of six important organizations in Kansas City, Missouri, and was honored several years ago for her volunteer work in Kansas City, Missouri.

Dr. and Mrs. Charles Stewart Gillmor, Jr. have two children: Charles Stewart Gillmor I I , born February 13, 1970 at Middletown, Connecticut, who was graduated from Choate-Rosen, Wellinford, Connecticut, in 1988; and Alison Bobue Gillmor, born October 9, 1972, at Middletown, Connecticut. In I988 Alison Bogue Gillmor was a junior at Choate-Rosen.

William ("Bud") Noland Gillmor, younger son of Mrs. Charles Stewart Gillmor and the late Dr. Gillmor, received his AB from Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri, an MA in mathematics from Kansas State University, and an MA in business administration from Northwestern University. Mr. Gillmor i s a f f i l i a t e d with Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Mr. Gillmor is associated with the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City.

Both Dr. Charles Stewart Gillmor, Jr. and his brother, William Noland Gillmor were Eagle Scouts and received their God and Country awards.

Florence Merriam Gotthelf, only child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gordon Gotthelf, was born March 6, 1915, Saguache, Colorado. Miss Gotthelf attended the Ferry Hall school, lake Forest, I l l i n o i s , and was graduated from Finch School, New York City, 1934. In 1939 Miss Gotthelf was married to Isaac Tracy Axton, Jr., of Cherokee Manor, Louisville, Kentucky. The wedding, a highlight of the Washington, D. C. social season, was celebrated at the'wardman Park Hotel arartment of Miss Gotthelf's uncle and aunt, General and Mrs Freder­ick W. Boschen. While residing in New York City, Mrs. Axton was president of the Finch College Alumnae Association, was a fasion model, and was active in various philanthropic organizations. The Axtons's only child, Gordon Tracy Axton, born July 30, 1940, attended Trinity School in New York City, Fountain Valley School in Fountain, Colorado, and City of San Francisco College. In June I960, Gordon Tracy Axton was married to Norma Jean Smith. Their son, Gordon Tracy Axton, Jr., born 1961, was graduated magnum cum laude from Menlo Collegg, Menlo Park, California. In I988 he was associated with a nationally known firm of public accountants. Erik Axton, younger son of the Axtons, was a high school student in 1983. In 1959 Mrs. Isaac Tracy Axton, Jr. moved to Denver, Colorado, where she is active in several philanthropic organizations.
