Bailey Award Prix Dr. et Mrs. D.L. Bailey

Zenon A. Patrick

The Dr. and Mrs. D.L. Bailey Award is presented in the memory of one of Canada's outstanding teachers of plant pathology and his wife. It recognizes an out-standing scientific publication which demonstrates to mankind the benefits of research in plant pathology.

It is very appropriate to recognize one of Dr. Bailey's own students, Dr. Zenon A. Patrick, Pro-fessor Emeritus, Department of Botany, University of Toronto, with this award for his review "Allelopathic mechanisms and their exploitation for biological con-trol" (Can. J. Plant Pathol. 8:225-228). This article, an overview of the subject by one of the first plant pathologists to explore the interaction between allelo-chemicals and plant pathogens, illustrates how basic

knowledge of allelopathy may be used to exploit alle-lochemicals in biological control. The increasing need to replace pesticides with biological control methods is coincident with our increased awareness of allelopathic effects in crops grown under minimum tillage systems. Dr. Patrick challenges future researchers to use the knowledge of allelopathy to minimize the harmful effects of allelochemicals while exploiting their beneficial effects in disease control. Hopefully, this challenge by a leading authority in the field will be heeded by plant patholo-gists in the future.

We are pleased to honour Dr. Patrick with the Dr. and Mrs. D.L. Bailey Award.

Dow

nloa

ded

by [

Uni

vers

ity o

f T

oron

to L

ibra

ries

] at

16:

54 3

1 O

ctob

er 2

014
