if you are a fan, you may have noticed the recent, conspicuous presence of the white van decaled with the CbC logo around town.

The opening of a CBC bureau in Kamloops and the launch of locally based programming has been widely anticipated for months by area residents. a license application for an FM station was approved in late March, 2012 by the Canadian Radio-television Telecom-munications Commission (CrTC).

Amidst much speculation and buzz, interior renovations have begun in the space on the 200 block of Victoria Street, next to Blenz Coffee, that will house the new Kamloops CBC office.

CBC has not confirmed fu-ture dates regarding the open-ing of their new office and the launch of the new program-ming or officially revealed the names of local personalities that may have been hired as program hosts.

From Vancouver, CbC Com-munications Officer, Leo Da-mion stated, “We realize this is an exciting time for Kamloops and we will be issuing a formal press release in early Sep-tember.”

while everything may seem inconclusive on the national broadcaster’s end, one Kamloops reporter and self-proclaimed news junkie has confirmed that he will be the Kamloops morn-ing news announcer and editor for CbC.

CFJC-TV’s Doug Herbert will make the move back to radio and will join CBC in early September. Trained as a journalist at BCIT, prior to joining the CFJC news team in July last year as a general assignment re-

porter and weekend radio reporter, Doug worked in radio as an an-chor and reporter for news station

actively involved in the community, doug spoke of his new position and pointed out, “I’m looking forward to being a part of a lo-cally focused CbC team with people who will make it a priority to report on issues and cultural events that reflect what matters to the Kamloops region.”

Currently, the northern parts of the south-ern interior region receive a feed from CbC Radio’s Kelowna transmitter. Following the

launch of the new programming several com-munities will have their transmitters moved to river City. This means communities in-cluding Revelstoke, Williams Lake, Merritt, Barriere and Clearwater will be able to tune into the new radio services to receive updates on community affairs. The station will cover a minimum of 12 hours and 30 minutes of re-gional programming each week.

After a six-month delay, due to the fed-eral budget cutting funding to the CBC, the downtown Kamloops headquarters is taking shape. The wait for listeners to tune in to lo-cal voices and content on 94.1 on the FM dial will soon be over.

“This year we received 244 nominations for fifteen award categories,” stated Maurice Hindle, president of the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce. “A total of 168 Kamloops busi-nesses were nominated.”

The 27th annual business excellence Awards are brought to the community by

the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce and TD Canada Trust. The event celebrates the Kamloops business community and highlights 16 award winners in total (business of the year is chosen from the winners of the other 15 awards).

“We want to thank TD Canada Trust for sup-

porting this program,” continued Mr. Hindle. “We value TD’s partnership and their dedica-tion to our community.”

The gala awards banquet and ceremony is scheduled for October 13 at the Kamloops Convention Centre. “This prestigious event is always a sell-out,” stated Hindle.

On September 10, the finalists are revealed at a Chamber function hosted by Kamloops Ford Lincoln at their new location (940 Halston Avenue). The public are invited to attend. The winners will be announced October 13 at the business excellence awards gala at Kamloops Convention Centre.

interior health is moving forward with the recently announced first phase of royal inland Hospital redevelopment by posting a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the initial design work on the new Clinical services building.

“We are excited to see Interior Health tak-ing this first step in the design process,” says Kamloops North Thompson MLA Terry Lake. “This next step brings us closer to actual construction of the new Clinical services Building.”

Premier Christy Clark announced the first phase of the redevelopment of royal inland hospital, which includes a new clinical ser-vices building, medical teaching space and more onsite parking, on July 11.

“it is heartening to see royal inland Hospital’s Master Plan proceed toward con-struction of the first building with this very tangible step, as the RFP for Consulting Services is posted,” says Kamloops South Thompson MLA Kevin Krueger.

The RFP is for initial indicative design work for the new building. This first step will look at space requirements and examine which of the hospital’s outpatient services might be most appropriate to move to the new building.

“The commitment for further planning to expand royal inland with a new Clinical services building will help us continue to deliver high quality care and ensure access,” says interior health board Chair norman Embree.

The first phase of redevelopment is estimated to cost in the range of $70 to $80 million and will be shared with the Thompson Regional hospital district. detailed construction costs will be determined when the business case is approved in early 2013.

“This first phase of redevelopment at royal Inland is great news not only for Kamloops but for the surrounding communities that rely on this hospital as a tertiary referral centre,” says TRHD Chair Peter Milobar.

The rFp was posted online on bC bid and will close at the end of august. The contract will likely be awarded in early September.

Cathy McLeod, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue and Member of Parliament for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo, today highlighted that those affected by flooding can apply for relief from the Canada revenue agency (Cra) if they are having difficulty meeting their tax obligations because of extreme weather events.

“severe weather conditions can prevent Canadians from meeting their tax obliga-tions” said McLeod. “Recently, Canadians from several regions, including ours, have had to rebuild because of severe weather events; our taxpayer relief provisions ensure that all Canadians receive fair tax treatment, while they are recovering from the damage resulting from flooding.”

All Canadians have access to the CRA’s taxpayer relief measures and will be consid-ered for relief if they miss a payment or filing deadline because their lives were disrupted by uncontrollable weather events, including for-est fires caused by lightning strikes, tornadoes, flooding, landslides and hurricanes.

“It is during these tough times that the CRA’s taxpayer relief provisions prove their value by

ensuring that Canadians are not further penal-ized when they are unable to make payments on time because of abnormal weather condi-tions” McLeod added.

The taxpayer relief provisions use a bal-anced approach to help taxpayers to resolve tax issues that arise through no fault of their own. under these provisions, any taxpayer can apply to the Cra to have interest and/or penalties waived or cancelled in situations where they are unable to file a tax return and/or make a payment on time due to a natural disaster or other extraordinary circumstances beyond their control. Taxpayers must submit their request in writing using form RC4288, Request for Taxpayer Relief. The CRA will consider these requests on a case-by-case basis.

Affected taxpayers who have questions or concerns about the CRA’s taxpayer relief provisions can access additional informa-tion on the CRA website at www.cra.gc.ca/taxpayerrelief or they can call the Cra at 1-800-959-8281. Business owners and self employed individuals can call the Cra at 1 800 959 5525.

A good RiBBiN’

Veterans of competitive BBQers racked up points with locals at Riverside Park this weekend for Rotary Daybreak’s first ever Kamloops Ribfest. In addition to a rib cook-off competition, this highly successful event offered music and entertainment throughout the weekend for the entire family and a whole whack of great vendors. With five mouthwatering ribbers to choose from the choice was tough. The people spoke and Praire Smoke n’ Spice went away with the People’s Choice award and best ribs award from the 12-member judging panel. Rob Reinhardt, owner of Praire Smoke n’ Spice was blown away with the phenomenal response to this first year event. On Facebook he posted, “Just wanted to take a quick moment to thank the people of Kamloops for their warm hospitality, positive attitudes. We will be back next year and ready for the hordes of BBQ lovers!”

Fresh murals and spicy challenge heats up downtownThe KCBIA CAP Team is nearing its final

month for its summer program, however many events and projects are still to come in the month of august.

The Cap Team is setting its sights on the removal of dumpsters within the downtown area to make room for a couple new murals in the back alleys and to maximize parking stalls for merchants. 3 murals will be taking form within the month of august to comple-ment the streets of our city. To help illumi-nate the murals the CAP Team is working on a lighting project that offers more light fixtures to show off the work that the artists produce on the walls

and maximizes lighting in the back alleys during the night.

As well, let’s not forget our annual Salsa Challenge and Extended Farmers Market that are happening on august 22nd on the 400 block of Victoria St. If you have a team you would like to sign up for this challenge please contact the KCBIA to register and receive further information. spots are filling up quick so be sure to register soon so you can try and become this year’s winner of the salsa competition! 2012 commemorates Kamloops’ 200th year of shared living between the secwepemc First nations and europeans. The north and south Thompson rivers have always defined the identity and shaped the boundaries of Kamloops and in the secwepemc language, Kamloops means “meeting of the waters”. This sentiment express-es the “2 rivers, 2 peoples, 200 Years” theme for the Kamloops Bicentennial celebrations.

In 1812, fur trader and explorer David Stuart built a trading post on the shore of the Thompson river. This year the City of Kamloops is commemorating two hundred years of shared history between the Secwepemc people and all those who came after david stuart.

a special event on august 25, 10:00am to 4:00pm at Riverside Park, will be filled with bicentennial themed activities planned by the City, Kamloops Museum and archives and Tk’emlups Indian Band. At 9:00am at Riverside Park, a com-munity pancake breakfast will be served by the Paddlewheelers Lions Club, after which residents and visitors can spend a day focusing on our local history. The park will be filled with heritage and cultural displays, art, drum-ming, theatrical performances and face painting. Local vendors will provide food and refreshments.

To commemorate this spe-cial anniversary, a ceremonial meeting on the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc lands between Mayor

Peter Milobar and Chief Shane Gottfriedson will take place at 1:00pm. The two leaders will pad-dle down the south Thompson river in a voyageur canoe along with members of their councils, to Riverside Park where they will be greeted by drumming and danc-ing performances, a tree planting ceremony and the unveiling of a

plaque to commemorate the 2012 anniversary.

Mark the date on your calen-dars and be a part of 200 years of history by joining the towns-people for a full day of celebra-tions and attractions in the heart of our community. For more information, please visit www.kamloops.ca/200years.

Recently there was an article published in the Toronto Sun which looked at the results of a study that analyzed the levels of certain chemicals found in the urine ofwomen with and with-out diabetes. The results found that women who had high levels of chemi-cals called phthal-ates had an increased risk of being diag-nosed with diabetes. These chemicals are commonly found in soaps, lotions, nail polishes, hairsprays, and perfumes. Ad-ditionally, they can be found in batteries, electronics, adhesives, toys and even medications.

This was a large study, analyz-ing the levels of phthalates in 2350 women. In particular, the women who had the highest levels of the chemicals mono-benzyl phthalate and mono-isobutyl phthalate had almost double the incidence of dia-betes compared to women with the lowest levels. Additionally, women with higher than average levels of the chemical mono-(3-carboxy-propyl) phthalate had approxi-mately a 60 percent increased risk of developing diabetes. However, as women who have diabetes are more likely to use medical devices and take medications which may contain these chemicals, this could account for the increase levels in their urine, therefore, more studies are needed in order to substantiate these findings.

This is not the first study link-ing environmental toxins to an increase in diabetes. A study pub-lished in 2009 examined the con-nection between environmental toxins and type 2 diabetes in the Canadian First Nations population also found a connection. Toxins such as phthalates, methylmer-cury, arsenic, and other persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are more prevelant in the traditional wild

game and fish harvested by First Nation peoples than in the past. Once again, the results of this study were not conclusive.

So what exactly are phthalates? These chemicals are commonly used as plasticizers. In January of

2011 Health Canada restricted the allow-able amount in chil-dren’s toys. They are thought to be “en-docrine disruptors” meaning that they mimic our natural hormones, leading to detremental reproduc-tive and neurological effects.

Regardless of whether or not a direct link can be made to them increasing your risk of diabetes, it would be wise to de-crease your and your loved ones exposure to them anyhow. You can start by reading the labels of your personal care items and plas-tic products. Unfortunately, you’ll rarely find the word “phthalates” on a label, instead look for the their chemical names or abbreviations such as: DBP (di-n-butyl phthal-ate), DEP (diethyl phthalate), DEHP (di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate or Bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate), BzBP (benzylbutyl phthalate) and DMP (dimethyl phthalate). Addi-tionally, plastics with the recycling codes 3 and 7 are more likely to contain bisphenol A or phthalates.

I hope this article has opened your eyes to the potential adverse health effects that can result from over exposure to environmental toxins. It will be interesting to see the outcomes of further studies done in this field. In the meantime, continue to do your best to man-age your health through making healthy lifestyle choices which in-cluded proper diet and exercise as well as minimizing your exposure to these dangerous chemicals.

In a spirited competition spearheaded by Tourism Kamloops the cocktails were put to the test. On Thursday, August 9 the five top place participants were invited to St. Andrew’s on the Square to find out who would take first place and be crowned with the coveted title of Kamloops Cocktail Grand Champion. The winning cocktail was created in a charming little downtown eatery and Katherine Whitehead and Andrea Broaders-Tombs of Terra Restaurant came back from the finals with some new hardware! If you haven’t had the chance to stop in to Terra and check out the Spirit of the Black Sage you are definitely in for a treat. Our crackerjack, roving reporter told us that the drink was definitely worthy of its grand champion title.

AeroPress coffee tastes better because the ground coffee is totally immersed in the hot water, resulting in fast and extensive extraction of the flavour compounds. This method shortens brew time to 20 seconds or less, which avoids the unpleasant bitterness created by slower methods. The acid level of AeroPress brew is much less than conventional methods and coffee lovers are delighted by the fact that AeroPress brew is more friendly to their stomachs.
