EPA Environmental Achievement Award (2008) TEACHING ENVIRONMENTAL AND NATURAL RESOURCES 761 – SOIL BIOCHEMISTRY (U G 4 HOURS) This course includes information related to soil biochemical techniques, element transformations, biologically active compounds, pesticide metabolism, and the fate of genetic materials in soils. The course is generally taught every other year but if demand is great enough, the course is taught during years when it is not normally scheduled. Average enrollment is approximately 8 students with most being at the Ph.D. level. SOIL SCIENCE (TAUGHT IN CHINA, 2002) A two-week course on the basic aspects of Soil Science was taught to approximately 110 students and professors at Nanjing Agricultural University in October, 2002. The purpose of this course was to prepare soil science faculty in China to go back to their home institutions where they would, in turn, teach their students soil science in English. SOIL SCIENCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE 999 – RESEARCH Graduate research credit is provided to students who are conducting their MS or PhD research activities. Soil Science 999 has been taught most every quarter since 1982 and Environmental Science 999 has been taught as needed by students since 1998. Grading is Satisfactory-Unsatisfactory. Manli Wu Junfen Xiong Qichun Zhang Samer Al-Saffar Fullbright Scholars Khalil Tubail RESEARCH FOCUS My research program focuses on soil biochemistry, microbiology and environmental soil chemistry: 1. I am the caretaker of the longest continuously maintained no-tillage plots in the world. These plots have

been no-tilled continuously since 1962 representing more than 40 years of no-tillage. As a result, we can learn many things about the impact of no-tillage on soil processes, production of crops (i.e. corn and soybeans), insect and weed responses, and other fundamental soil-plant interactions.

2. Use of soil enzyme activity assays to monitor changes and overall general quality of a soil. This involves developing new methods for measuring enzyme activities and assessing how enzyme activities affect the function of the soil. For example, we have recently developed an assay to measure myrosinase activity in soil. Myrosinase is an enzyme involved in releasing allelopathic compounds into the soil.

3. Study of microbial communities in soil using culture and nonculture methods. Microbial communities have been characterized in wetlands receiving acid mine drainage and in soils where enhanced degradation of the herbicide, EPTC, occurs. These studies involve extraction of total microbial community DNA from soils and then amplifying specific genes, often the 16s RNA gene, to identify microbial community members.

4. Nitrogen, sulfur and carbon cycling in soil. This includes studies of denitrification in soils as affected by tillage and cropping system, carbon sequestration under long-term no-tillage and sulfur cycling in surface coal mined areas.

5. Beneficial recycling of “solid wastes.” Many by-products of our agricultural, industrial and municipal activities have value if they are properly characterized and utilized. A large amount of effort has focused on developing beneficial uses of coal combustion products in agriculture, for mineland reclamation, for engineering purposes and as a raw material in creation of manufactured products.

6. Use of brassica cover crops for biological weed control. No-tillage is a well-known soil building and soil protecting crop production system. Many people, however, are opposed to no-tillage because of its reliance on herbicides for weed control. We are conducting studies using cover crops that exhibit allelopathic properties that biologically control weeds. The cover crops are killed in the winter by cold weather and crops are directly seeded, via no-tillage, into the residue mat that is created by the cover crop.

7. Other miscellaneous activities have included studies of siderophore production in compost amended soils, fate of animal pathogens that enter the soil via manure applications, development of tools to study the molecular biology of Rhodococcus spp., surface water quality as impacted by surface coal mining and agricultural activities, and biological disease control of plants using compost.
