WALKING ON AN

Awakening Path

J U LY 2 0 1 9

What does it mean to walk on an awakening path? It is something much simpler than you might think.

First, we would like you to consider an experience that many of us have had. If you have not had an experience like this, that is OK! You can still imagine it. Then, talk about awakening paths will make so much more sense.

Imagine – you are walking on a path through fields of green grass. Every- where, there are bright little dande-lions. What do you say to yourself? “My goodness! Look at all these obnoxious little weeds everywhere!” Or, “What beautiful little flowers! I’m go-ing to pick a few and make a nice green salad and some tea with them!” Maybe you remember the joy of plucking these flowers as a child. Or maybe you think with disgust of the toil of dig-ging them up in your garden.

Now. The truth is, there is just you, the fields, and the dandelions. Are dandelions obnoxious? Are they delightful? If you really look at it, those experiences – delight or disgust – have to do with you. Do you want dandelions to bring you happiness and joy? Or do you want them to make you miserable? This is the choice you get to make. That is how life is, and that is what it means to choose to walk on an awakening path.

Our life is like a path. We have to walk it every day. Along the way, we will encounter many things, people, and events. Every one of these can open our hearts more, teach us more about life, and deepen our connection to others, to the living world around us, and even to the universe.

This path we walk every day can bring us more joy, peace, gratitude, and contentment. Or, it can turn us around, wear us out, and take us deep into

thorns, thickets, and muddy places. Our mind might end up going one way, our body another, and our spirit – who knows! We can get lost easily. That means being dis-connected within ourselves, discon-nected from what is around us, and being caught up in pain and suffering.

This path of thick-ets and thorns is a very easy path to go down. It is very

easy to see weeds and nuisances. But it is just as easy to see flowers and delight, and to walk an easier path. That is exactly what Spring Forest Qigong helps you to do! There is an easy way to reconnect to yourself and to the world. There is a simple way to see the world differently.

Master Lin created Spring Forest Qigong to be simple. Yet, it is very, very powerful. His teach-ers told him, the simplest thing is usually the most powerful. And...it is true!

Would you believe that love, kindness, and forgiveness have the power to completely trans-form your life? Would you believe that taking time to feel a little gratitude, contentment, peace, happiness, and joy every day has helped

thousands of people to heal every health challenge you can imagine, from cancers to chronic pain? Well, you don’t have to believe it. You just have to try it. Love, kindness, forgiveness, joy: these are all things you already have. You were born with them. You just need to remember that.

This path we walk every day can bring us more joy, peace, gratitude, and contentment. Or, it can turn us around,

wear us out, and take us deep into thorns, thickets, and

muddy places.

In that sense, awakening is nothing but be-coming aware of your body, mind, and spirit. It is becoming aware of their connection to each other, and of your connection to everything around you. The simple practices of Spring For-est Qigong help you to do all of those things.

What kinds of things do we mean?

Do you want to reconnect to your body? Clap your hands nine times. Cup the inside of your left elbow nine times, then your right. Cup your armpits the same way nine times. Do all of this a few times.

Just doing this stimulates your heart energy, your lymph system, and what Qigong calls the “triple heaters,” a system that customizes energy for your whole body. That is because your hands have vital energy channels in them. Stimulating them, and using them to stimulate your arms, benefits your whole body. Just a little clapping and cupping! Try, and see how you feel.

Do you feel better? Maybe you feel... happy for no reason? Just like when you were a child with a dandelion! And that is perfect, because now you may remember another moment from childhood, which is so perfect for what we are discussing. Did you ever sing this song –

“If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands”? There was a lot more wisdom in that simple song than you realized, wasn’t there? What else did it say? “If you’re happy and you know it, then your face will really show it.” Then, it asked you to stomp your feet .

Just like clapping your hands stimulates six major energy channels, so does stomping your feet. There is even a point on each foot called “Bubbling Spring,” which connects to the kid-ney energy system – the body’s main source of vitality. There are stories of people clapping their hands, stomping their feet, and laughing to heal severe health challenges. Now you can begin to appreciate why!

So you see, it is simple to reconnect to your body and see all the gifts it offers you. Connect-ing to your body like this, you even learn about the energy of positive emotions like happiness.

From the Qigong perspective, the energy of happiness helps to heal the liver system. The liver transforms 70% of the toxins in the body. So, in a very real way, laughing, smiling, and feeling happy can save our lives! As happiness grows, it leads to joy, which benefits the heart and its energy system. Joy’s fullness leads to peace. That benefits the spleen, pancreas, and stomach energy system (which also includes the joints and muscles).

Out of peace arises contentment, which nourishes the lung energy system.

Contentment gives rise to gratitude, replenishing our kidney energy system, which you know now is the body’s main source of vitality. Gratitude feeds happiness. That means, living like this, we find ourselves in a continuous, heal-ing cycle of positive emotions.

So, by using Qigong to connect to the body, we can also

reconnect with the kinds of emotions we value and desire the most. This, in

turn, helps the body.

And out of all these gathering benefits – with a healthy body, with health-nourishing emotions flowing through us – arises a calm, quiet mind. How can the mind be disturbed in an environment like that? So, the mind can be at ease, too.

Then, with a calm mind, balanced body, free of the inner tyranny of disturbing emotions, we find we have created the most fertile soil for the growth and expression of our most beautiful spiritual qualities. As we awaken to the nature and the expression of these spiritual qualities – to our soul and its purpose – we really begin to walk an awakened, awakening path. Living our soul purpose is a journey in itself... but that is a story for another day!

Giving as a

Qigong Practice

All kinds of people read this newsletter.

Some are longtime students of Spring Forest Qigong. Many even teach classes and do healing in their communities. Others have taken a class or bought a home-study course or two and continue with their own practice. And some are even beginners!

But among all these different people in different places, one thing is fairly consistent: they first came to Spring Forest Qigong for their health.

You name it. Cancer of every kind. Arthritis. Injuries. Heart challenges. Lung challenges. Chronic pain. Depression, anxiety, life-traumas. Whether they came to the healing center in Minnesota, to a class, or to a simple book and a video, what they were looking for was a technique, a way, to find health, balance, and vitality again. As simple as that.

Even so, to take the next step and simply to start a Qigong practice is often still a journey in itself. The first

hurdle to get over is usually energy. “Energy? What in the world is that supposed to mean? Emotions and thoughts are energy? What does a feeling have to do with my pancreas and my neck?”

But usually they try the healing movements and say, “I suppose I can understand how moving my body can get something more subtle mov-ing inside me.” And some-times that is enough. Starting with that, they feel a little change, then continue on with the hope of more and bigger changes. Time and again, this brings them to the healing they came looking for.

So, we see again and again that, for most people, it really isn’t such a big leap after all to see the mind, emotions, and body simply as forms of energy, all connected and always in-teracting with each other. It becomes easier and easier to understand how Spring Forest Qigong movements and meditations can serve to bal-ance all those energies to bring about healing.

Giving, though – giving as a Qigong practice? It’s not just beginners; sometimes students who have been around for a while still wonder what giving has to do with energy, Qigong, and healing .

Why does Master Lin say to “do more good things” and “help more people” in order to build your energy? Why does he say, if you “are always ready to help others and you do

what you are willing to do from the bottom of your heart, expecting nothing in return, you can heal yourself much, much faster”?

Well, he tells you right at the start, in Level One. “If you really do good things ... without asking for or ex-pecting something in return, but do it out of your heart, the universe will know and you will be rewarded in the future.”

The truth is, giving is at the heart of Spring Forest

Qigong, and it is one of the easiest ways to open your heart for healing – yourself, others, and the world.

And why open your heart?

In Spring Forest Qigong, we hear time and again that, even though techniques and knowl-edge are necessary for good healing, they are still the second most important thing. What is the most important thing, then? Unconditional love, kindness, and forgiveness.

These are all pure spiritual qualities: quali-ties of the heart . The more we heal, the more the heart opens to express these qualities in

our daily lives; the more we open

the heart to express these qualities, the more deeply we heal. So, healing and ever-greater expression of the spiritual qualities of the

heart go hand in hand.

Maybe you never thought of giving in this

If you really do good things ... without asking for or expecting something in return, but do it out of your heart, the universe will know and you will be rewarded in the future.

way. We give all the time – for birthdays, for holidays, for anniversaries, and so on. It’s such a common thing, we may not even think twice about it. But this must have been your experi-ence before. Have you ever given a gift to some-one just because it was the thing to do? Or, have you ever been given a gift from someone who you can tell… didn’t really want to give it? How did that feel? Even if it was something very nice, didn’t it feel – empty? Even... insulting?

And have you ever been given a “useless” gift, something like a crayon scribbling from a joyful child, and felt so honored, so happy? Why is that? Why the difference in those two kinds of giving? That is because real giving comes from the heart and its fine qualities, from love, joy, gratitude, and happiness. We can all feel the difference. So, when you consider that a beau-tiful gift seems ugly without real love behind it, you can appreciate that the actual gift is the fine qualities of the heart that motivated its giving. That is what we really value.

In the Five Element Healing Movements, Master Lin says it even more plainly. He says,

positive emotions like joy, gratitude, and happi-ness are very powerful energies, very powerful vibrations, with a deeply transformative healing power over every imaginable challenge.

In that light, giving becomes both incredibly simple and incredibly powerful... with no cost, limitless benefit, and endless returns. Love ceas-es to be an abstraction and becomes an action .

Why do you think Master Lin says he wants everyone to become a “love radiator”? Because the more love we radiate, the more the heart opens. Then, more love comes back to us, open-ing the heart to give even more love – an infinite expanding love-loop!

So, there is a wisdom behind the simple statement.

What can you give? You can simply give a smile. If someone is smiling, you can smile back. If they are not smiling, you can still smile. A smile awakens the heart’s energy in the smiler, and it can do the same in the one who sees it; either way, it is giving, and someone is benefiting.

You can give your ear – your attention. So many of us who feel called to heal, deep down, want to fix the person we help. But do you know what? Simply to listen deeply, completely, with a compassionate heart already helps energy to transform for the better. Simply to listen to suffering, with no thought of anything else, is an act of profound unconditional love.

Unconditional love. That means, no thought of returns, no thought of outcomes: simply love because love is enough. Yet what results, what will come back, one way or another, one day or another, will surprise you beyond any possible expectation or imagination.

Why is that?

In Spring Forest Qigong, we always say the password, “I am in the universe. The universe is in my body. The universe and I combine together.” That means, everything is connected, everything is ultimately one, and whatever we do to others will always, eventually, come back to us.

But maybe that still seems like too much for you. Maybe you feel you don’t have enough time, or energy, or love to share. That’s just fine! A Spring Forest Qigong practice teaches so much – even simple practices like detection

and concepts like balance – that we can apply beyond our Qigong practice .

The detection that tells you where a blockage is in the body can also tell you whether or not to give your time and attention to someone. Bal-ance teaches you, just as we don’t put too much weight on one leg all the time or put too much or too little energy in one part of the body, there is a time and a place both for giving and not giving – and both are necessary.

But just keep in mind, the more you give and the grander your purpose, the more you will be given in return. If you say, “I need enough energy to heal myself,” the universe will give you that. But if you say, “I want enough energy to heal the whole world,” the universe will give you that, too! That is how the universe works. Just start somewhere, with something – see what happens!

Because ultimately, the practice of giving, like the journey of healing, never ends. One simply returns again and again to a new beginning. One is always beginning. And if you can do that while also being open to change and the growth it brings, simply committing to doing the best you can in the moment you find yourself in, you will find you are really always just receiving one blessing after another.

Puja’s CornerPUPPY KNOWS BEST

Woof! Puja and Tillie here...

Okay, folks, we need to talk. On behalf of all my furry, feathered, four-legged, two-legged, (six-legged?) friends out there, we need to tell you that SOMETIMES, just sometimes, we know better than you humans do. I know that’s a hard thing to grasp,

given the supreme intellect that you humans seem to have. But intellect is not everything. When it comes to Qigong in all its aspects, intellect counts for very little. It is unconditional

love, feeling, intuition, the sixth sense, and surrender to the Universe that can bring us to a state of healing and spiritual growth! And THAT, folks, is something we animals do really, really well!!! (Do I hear lots of barks, meows, chirps, snorts, and roars out there?)

Here’s a story from a little fellow, Tillie’s and my new friend, Puppy, who taught his humans about the benefits of the Six-Word Chant…

Puppy was brought into a family with two teenage boys, ages 17 and 19. They were both suffering from depression, but most especially the 17-year-old. Mom kept trying to get them to listen to the Six-Word Chant Meditation CD, but, as teenagers will, they thought they were way too cool to get into meditation and chanting. They refused.

Well, Puppy, full of boundless energy (Yeah, maybe at times a little destructive? Sorry about those shoes, Mom!), one day encountered the Six-Word Chant that Mom was playing. Wow!! Amazing! Chilled him right out!! Puppy LOVED the chanting and couldn’t get enough of it. All that energy he didn’t know what to do with was transformed into calm and directed energy. He became a little Puppy Buddha.

Well, the 17-year-old saw this transformation, and decided that Puppy was onto something. He started to listen to it, too! And guess what? It chilled him right out and almost like magic,

in a short time his depression lifted and he found himself happy and at peace with the world.

Then, the older 19-year-old brother got wind of what was going on with the Six-Word Chant, and he started listening and practicing too!

The moral of the story is, we animals are incredibly open and receptive to Spring Forest Qigong healing and meditations. And because of our great love for our humans, we can help you to learn and heal. All you have to do is listen to us. Just sometimes.

Woof!!

Chinese nutrition focuses on the energetic properties of food. For example some foods are considered warming and others cooling.

In the heat of summer time cooling foods are very good. We’ve listed some wonderful ones below.

COOLING FOODSThese fruits and vegetables can help your body adjust its temperature and protect you during the long, hot summer days: Red is the color of the Heart Meridian. You can use that color as a guide. For example, tomatoes, sweet red peppers, and watermelon are good summer energy choices. There also neutral foods you can add to your diet anytime like corn for example or potato, yam, turnip, carrot and apple. Organic almonds and peanuts are another neutral food.

Watermelon ApricotCantaloupe LemonPeach Orange Asparagus Lettuce (many varieties)Sprouts Bamboo Bok Choy BroccoliChinese cabbage Corn Cucumber CeleryCauliflower White mushroomSnow peas SpinachSummer squash Tomato Sweet red bell pepper ZucchiniWatercress Seaweed Non-GMO tofu Mung beansCilantro Mint Dill

EAT LIGHT AND AVOID FATTY FOODSDuring summer you want to eat light and eat moderately. When you overeat your body has to spend too much energy to digest your food, which leaves less energy for everything else.

Avoid fatty, greasy or oily foods. Limit your

consumption of red meat and chicken. And limit your consumption of sugar.

DRINK LOTS OF HEALTHY FLUIDSDrink lots of fluids but when it’s very hot limit your consumption of really cold fluids. Too many cold fluids, like ice water are not helpful to the stomach and pancreas. They can also make digestion more difficult and take energy away from the heart. I am sure you have ex-perienced feeling light headed in the summer heat after you ate a frozen dessert or drank an icy beverage.

If you drink alcohol, beer, wine or spirits, do so in moderation. This is always a good idea.

REFRAIN FROM EATING BEFORE BEDTIMEOne more good tip for summer is to avoid eating anything, or drinking any alcohol, two hours before going to bed. It is not helpful for your liver and pancreas. Eating or drinking alcohol too close to bedtime weakens your earth energy, which is so important, especially in summer.

These tips can help you to get the most out of the wonderful energy of summer.

Q How can Qigong help memory loss,

Alzheimer’s issues, and dementia?

MASTER LIN: That is an area I found so interesting, and Qigong definitely can have a great contribution helping people in this area. The work I created and the self-learning package—Qi-ssage—is extremely helpful. Because the brain has too much garbage, you need to drain the garbage out. How can you help yourself to detoxify from the brain better and quicker? There are quite a few exercises you can do—like tapping the tailbone and massaging the tip of the fingers and the middle of the palm. They’re all in the book Head to Toe Healing: Your Body’s Repair Manual . And then open up the channels in the base of the head and the energy points at the beginning of the eyebrows to detoxify the stomach channels. And the liver, of course, is a very, very important part to detoxify. Exercise like bouncing the body with the heels up is in the Harvesting of Qi in Level One, and that’s a very good exercise. Eat more black food, like black beans, black sesame seeds, walnuts, almonds, and olive oil. Don’t eat foods that sit in the refrigerator for many days. One or two days is alright. And I

also don’t encourage you to eat canned foods. So if you can do so, these things can help to prevent or slow down the process of Alzheimer’s and memory things. Most importantly, remember to relax yourself and sleep better. When you can relax yourself and you can sleep better, and your mind has a period of quiet time for itself, that’s the keyto help balance that energy .

Q When I’m doing the active exercise and

focusing on the feeling, should I try to amplify the feeling or just notice it? If I feel the tingling, should I make it tingle more or just go with what it is?

MASTER LIN: If I were you, I would make it more. I would emphasize it. Now when you feel this nice warmth in your chest, put your love into it. Put joy and love into it. You say, “My Master, thank you. My God, my Lord, thank you. Thank you so very much for sending me this love. I can feel you. I love you. I love you. I can feel you. Please send me more . Thank you, thank you, thank you.” Just repeat it like that. Then you are able to receive more energy and open your heart—open thechannels in that particular area even more. When I first began practicing Qigong, I had severe arthritis in

my knees and I didn’t have much feeling in them. I remember the time when I healed my knees, I visualized my Buddha pointing the sword fingers, shooting energy directly to my knees. My Buddha was holding the two sword fingers in one hand and pointing to my knees with the other. And then I repeated in my mind, “I can feel you.” At the very beginning I didn’t feel at all, but I imagined I felt that light shooting out from his sword fingers into my knees. Then after a few days of doing this I could really feel the light shooting into my knees to heal my knees completely. My cartilage came back completely, and now my legs have more flexibility than ever before. And I really, really appreciate that . A lot of Masters in the past used the same technique to strengthen the power from within —to strengthen the connection with the divine. So this is a profound and simple technique. And please, open your heart and use it.

I started practicing Spring Forest Qigong after a bad fall. When I fell, I suffered a severe con-cussion. The doctor thought I might have a brain bleed, so I agreed to have a CT scan done. Fortu-nately, the scan did not reveal a brain bleed, but it did reveal the presence of an arachnoid cyst. This news scared me. I became extremely anxious. My brother helped me through this difficult time, until at last I was able to cope by myself. As all of this settled in, I decided I needed to start search-ing for alternative ways to help myself get past my concussion and the brain cyst. And that is when I found Qigong.

I had not heard of Qigong before; yet, I learned it has been practiced for thousands of years. That interested me, so I kept learning more. My re-search finally led me to Spring Forest Qigong. I felt that it could help me. I decided to try it. It was several healing sessions with Master Chunyi Lin that really started me on my path of healing.

Let me tell you: there is nothing like finding re-lief when you are desperate. Spring Forest Qigong has done that for me. I love the practice, and even now I continue to experience new health and well-being benefits. Yes, healing can be hard, but it also gives you a new freedom in your life.

My story goes beyond the concussion and the cyst. Over the years, I have been challenged with several health issues, including fibromyal-

gia. Finding Spring Forest Qigong was the “missing puz-zle-piece” in my fibromyalgia journey, too! After discov-ering the powerful self-healing proper-ties of Qigong in my physical, emotional, and spiritual realms, I now have a passion and a desire to share this gift. I have even written a book about my journey to health and peace!

One thing Qigong has taught me is to listen more deeply to my inner knowledge. With this has come a new, beautiful peace in my heart. I believe Qigong is a powerful healing tool. Prac-tice it, and you can change lives!

My journey did not stop there.

The healing I experienced from my medical events and challenges has inspired me to study four levels of Spring Forest Qigong. Today, I am a healer and a Certified Trainer. And I still practice Spring Forest Qigong every day!

HEALING STORIESHead to Heart: The 18-inch Journey into Oneself

I JUST FINISHED reading your eBook, Head to Heart, the 18-inch Journey into Oneself. I loved the book and the short meditations. I hope you will consider doing more eBooks in the future. This one was so convenient to use. I could read and do the meditations while waiting for a medical appointment or when I was sitting in bed. I have stage 4 breast cancer. Thankfully, at that stage I wasn’t expected to take chemotherapy or radiation. The surgery I had resolved a related breathing problem. I regularly do the SFQ Cancer Meditation as well as other SFQ meditations. I know energy healing is helping me. I think it is incredibly important to stay positive. I can say that I have not had a fearful day since my diagnosis one year and five months ago. I don’t allow it to take over my life. I feel happy and positive that I can still live my best life. I’m thankful I learned SFQ when I did—when I used to live in Eagan and could attend classes easily. I hope you’ll consider producing more eBooks. I think they have the potential to reach many more people. Thank you—Constance M.

Master of Qi Conference I WAS GLAD to meet you all at the Master of Qi conference. And getting to spend time in the many other informative sessions, as well as fellowship, and be blessed with the loving and healing energy vibration of the entire conference. . . In any case, my deepest appreciation and love to Master Lin, with great gratitude to him for the immeasurable blessings of love, wisdom, and teaching he has created for so many, myself of course hopefully included. I was indeed, and will always be honored to have had that moment with Master Lin. With thanks, love and gratitude to all at Spring Forest Qigong. —Henry G.

It’s True Guided Meditation THE GUIDED MEDITATION, It’s True, by Master Glenn Tobey, took me deeper into my heart than I’ve experienced in a long time. The pace, the light music, the repetition of “it’s true,” the

visualization of an open heart – my heart! – brought me to a place of peacefulness and, even more amazing, compassion for all life. I look forward to tomorrow, knowing I have this compassion to guide my perceptions and lead me in my actions. Thank you. —Bonnie R.
