Indigenous Education Activities for Vanier Employees We warmly invite Vanier employees in all areas (faculty, staff, non-teaching professionals, management, administration) to participate in the

following learning activities in Indigenous education. The goal of these activities is to empower us with knowledge about the realities of

Indigenous students and their communities. This knowledge allows us to better support this population of students, and by extension, their

families and communities, and to better educate our non-Indigenous students about crucial aspects of contemporary Canadian society of

which they are largely unaware. These actions are a direct response to the CICan Indigenous Education Protocol, to which Vanier became a

signatory in the fall of 2017, the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions’s Calls to Action, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of

Indigenous Peoples. If you would like to be on the Indigenous Studies/Indigenous Education mailing list to be among the first to hear of these

and other opportunities, please email [email protected].

Day of Learning in Indigenous Education, Friday, May 17th, 9:00AM – 4:00PM

This day of learning is aimed at employees but is open to interested students. In the morning, Diane Labelle, from the First Nations Regional

Adult Education Council, will lead us through an interactive activity called: “From Circles to Squares”. This activity aims to demonstrate the

ways in which colonialism has disempowered Indigenous peoples. We will discuss how this impacts our Indigenous students and how it has

led to non-Indigenous people being unaware of their power over Indigenous peoples. After lunch, provided by a local Indigenous caterer, we

will offer a selection of workshops on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. Participants will discuss how they can respond

to these calls to action in their own areas of work at the college and elsewhere. For any questions, please write to:

[email protected]. Please register by filling out this form.

Intercollegiate Conference - Truth and ReconciliAction: Reimaginine Cegeps for Indigenous Futures, May 22, 9:00AM

– 4:00PM (Vanier College, various locations)

This is an inter-collegiate conference open to all employees, organized with the support of an ECQ grant obtained by an inter-collegiate

network of employees working on Indigenizing the Cégep system. In addition to the usual attendees to Indigenous Education workshops

(teachers, lab technicians, and a few front-line workers), we are sending a special call out to all front-line workers (admissions, advising,

student services, registrars) and decision-making employees in management and administration. Indigenous students are warmly invited to

participate in any capacity. We will start with a keynote by Indigenous scholar, Dr. Marie Battiste, and an Indigenous student panel. In the

afternoon, we will offer a variety of workshops aimed at different areas of work in Cégeps (administration, student support, academic, etc.).

For more information, please write to [email protected]. Please register here.

Montreal Pow Wow 2019 at Vanier College and Associated Learning Activities Once again, Vanier College, in collaboration with the Red Urban Project and the Vanier Indigenous Circle, will be hosting the annual Montreal

Pow Wow on May 4th and 5th, from 10AM to 6PM. The Grand Entry (when the drumming and dancing starts) is at noon on each day. All are

welcome to attend as the Pow Wow is open to people of all nations! Pow Wows are important celebrations that help bring together Indigenous

peoples from all directions, as well as friends of all nations. At one time banned by the Canadian government through the Indian Act, the Pow

Wow has re-emerged as a symbol of resistance and resilience, and serves as healing for many First Peoples individuals, families and

communities. To learn more, please see the Montreal Pow Wow’s website.

The Pow Wow is looking for volunteers to help out before and during the event. Any interested employees or students should MIO Jacky

Vallée to sign up!

Page 9: Vanier Graduation Ceremony June 19, 2019 · Vanier Graduation Ceremony June 19, 2019 The Vanier College Graduation Ceremony honouring our 2018-2019 graduates is taking place on Wednesday,

In addition to the Pow Wow itself, we invite you to two learning activities in the weeks preceding the Pow Wow.

Wednesday, April 24, UB, in D542, Elder Don Barnaby, First Nation Mi’gmaq from Listuguj Quebec, will share teachings about the history of

the Pow Wow celebration among First Nations peoples, as well as his own relationship to Pow Wow dances. All are welcome! No reservation

required. Teachers wishing to send students are asked to abstain from bringing an entire class, but you are encouraged to let students know

about the event and even give bonus assignments.

Thursday, May 2, from 11:30 to 2:30, several Pow Wow dancers from the local area will demonstrate some Pow Wow dance styles and

explain the meanings of these dances and their own relationships to their chosen style. The event will be held between the D and N buildings,

near the Vanier Gardens. In case of rain, we will be in Jake’s Mall. All are welcome to attend all or part of the event!

Upcoming Workshop: Breaking the Rules Around Food Presented by the Vanier Collective Gardens Community Project and A Place at the Table

Open to all students, faculty, staff and administration

Breaking the Rules around Food with Lisa Rutledge, RD

Thursday, Apr. 25, 12-1:30, in the Amphitheatre (B-223) Soup and coffee will be served Do you think a lot about the relationship between food and your health? Does your desire to eat the "right" foods, to be thin, or to be "healthy" take up a lot of your time and energy? Do you sometimes wish you could just be relaxed and happy in your body? Our culture exposes us to many messages about eating less, cutting out foods, and exercising to solve all our health problems. However, health and wellness are not that simple (thank goodness!) There is hope: we CAN feel happier and be healthier, and it has nothing to do with the traditional messages of “eat this, not that” or “calories in/calories out.” Join us for a refreshing conversation about diet culture, and how body acceptance and intuitive eating can play a role in your health and happiness. Accessibility Task Force Subgroup Introduction: Motivation, Cognition, Literacy, and Student Stress Marlene Eberhart (Music), Stefan Bracher (Physics), Sanaa Rizk (French), David Koloszyc (Humanities/A18), and Lissiene Neiva (Biology/H19)

Our subgroup members found common interest in understanding the links between motivation and the cognitive load or stresses involved in

attaining disciplinary literacies—reading and writing, but also numerical, digital, notational, and spatial literacies. We then worked on

developing strategies to address some of them in our classes that could also be of interest to other teachers and disciplines in the college.

In the fall, we described the literacy related challenges in our different disciplines and engaged in literature research to find out what were

considered ‘best practices’ in higher education contexts. As a result, we experimented with new assignments in our classes. During the winter

term, we have moved on to a greater variety of strategies, including some “cross training” activities between Science, French, and Music

learning.

As we continue to investigate our umbrella topics, our collective goal is make our classrooms more accessible for a variety of learning styles,

as well as to identify ‘accessibility gaps’.

Stefan has been using videos to complement the textbook as an alterative source of information for his Secondary 5 Physics class.

Lissiene has been experimenting with Perusall to encourage textbook reading, social annotation, and discussion among students. In

the same class, a creative assessment was proposed in which students brought home a portable microscope (Foldscope) to observe

cells of their house plants or of the vegetables they had in their fridge. In parallel, she continued to work on the different sections of

a handbook for the Science Program, to support students in the acquisition of skills that can be applied across the science disciplines.

This includes, for example, strategies to help students navigate digital information, to help them find good references for academic

work, and resources to foster their interaction with the scientific knowledge outside of classroom.

Sanaa has incorporated a variety of online learning platforms to enhance motivation in French language classes. Her particular

expertise is the link between motivation and cognitive load.

Marlene has experimented on several fronts in her music ear training and history classes: in-class reading/writing and listening

assignments that include identification, summary and synthesis of key elements; flipped classroom segments; breathing and body

movement exercises to reduce anxiety, increase focus for learning, and enhance rhythmic understanding; and introducing online

content curation for research assignments.

If you’d like to discuss your experiences and ideas with us, and open more dialogue across disciplines around these practices, p lease get in

touch with us.

Marlene Eberhart (Music), Stefan Bracher (Physics), Sanaa Rizk (French), David Koloszyc (Humanities), and Lissiene Neiva (Biology)
