Principles and restrictions

This methodology has been developed to track target group movements based on the following principles:

2

1. Difficult access to electricity for GPS recharge

2. Working on “no GSM/GPRS” coverage areas3. Need of develop a methodology with low

target group interaction with the device

Page 4: Using the GPS for people tracking

Device first charge

For the first time using the GPS unit, charge the battery until it is fully charged

Why?

4

The battery comes virtually uncharged , having only enough battery for a few minutes worth

How?

Take the power cable and connect it to the GPS unit (mini USB plug) and recharge through USB cable

Charging

Page 6: Using the GPS for people tracking

Device first charge

When the Power LED is green , the battery is under charging mode

When the Power LED is off ,

6

When the Power LED is off , the battery is fully charged

When the Power LED is Red, the battery is low. Please recharge.

Page 7: Using the GPS for people tracking

First data acquisitionOnce the battery is fully charged:1. Go to an outdoor environment2. Separate the GPS from the main body3. Switch on your GPS to LOG mode JUST when

7

using the first time

Page 8: Using the GPS for people tracking

First data acquisitionWhy?

1. The GPS device is manufactured in anothercountry so its necessary to calibrate the GPS inthe destination country .

8

2. To start to acquire satellites position, GPS needsoutdoor environments

3. The body of the target group can block part ofthe satellite coverage (see image previous slide)

4. LOG mode : Continuous data record . This moderecords data when the device detects enoughsatellites (no schedule)

Page 9: Using the GPS for people tracking

First data acquisition

Switch on GPS unit

GPS will startto acquire

satellites data Once de GPS position is

9

This should only be done the first time you switch on the GPS

First time of device connection it will take more time than usual

Only Managers should make this operation with the GPS onceAll data recorded in this step is not useful and can be deleted

Switch on GPS unit(LOG mode)

satellites data Once de GPS position isfixed, orange LED

will be flashing

Software installationInsert Software CD to your computer

and select BT-TR Q10000 model

10

Press “Next” button until installation completed successfully

Restart your computer

Why? This Software is necessary1. To configure GPS2. To download and storage data

Page 11: Using the GPS for people tracking

Device configuration

Start “Q-TRAVEL” program and enter software product key

11

Product key is enclosed with the software CD

Because it is the first time we connect this device, there are not tracks

and data so we should press “Cancel” button

Page 12: Using the GPS for people tracking

Device configuration

Why?

1. To establish the sampling interval (positions every “n” seconds when the device is ON)

12

2. Schedule automatic GPS ON and OFF to acquire every day position measurements in time intervals, if neccesary

Page 13: Using the GPS for people tracking

Device configurationConnect GPS to the computer (LOG or NAV mode)

and open Q-Travel

Select File menu and click on Config GPS…

13

Page 14: Using the GPS for people tracking

Device configuration

1. Select General mode

2. Log every 15 secondsWhy?

To assure the memory of device is not

14

To assure the memory of device is not full of data after 2 months of work (maximum storage capacity: 150.000 positions)

3. Turn on BuzzerWhy?

This parameter makes the device beep when it switches on (like an alarm ). (Buzzer reminds the target group that the device is O N, but it is not mandatory to activate it if it is ann oying)

Page 15: Using the GPS for people tracking

Device configuration

Schedule the GPS to acquire measures in different time intervals every day automatically

Why?

Select in “Turn on log at the following time ( periodic )” area of the CONFIG form..

15

It´s necessary to switch to NAV mode

Page 16: Using the GPS for people tracking

Device configuration

1. Select e. g. 3 schedules every day (Sun to Mon )

2. Time of measures (UTC time)• Morning: e.g.07:55 to 08:10

How?

Why?

16

• Mid day: e.g.10:05 to 10:15• Evening: e.g.17:40 to 17:50 (data capture before sleep time)

This interval it is recommended to be at least 10 to 15 min to reach good satellite coverage

Why?

The time of measures are just a recommendation. Managersshould decide which are the best times of measures for the

project .

Page 17: Using the GPS for people tracking

Device delivery to target group2 OPTIONS

OPTION 1:

Schedule the GPS to acquire “n” measures every day automatically(GPS device in NAV mode always)

17

OPTION 2:

Ask the target group to acquire position every time they are in anew place (GPS device from OFF to LOG mode)

Managers should decide which is the best option depending ontarget group capabilities

Page 18: Using the GPS for people tracking

Device delivery to target group2 OPTIONS

OPTION 1:

Schedule the GPS to acquire “n” measures every day automatically(GPS device in NAV mode always)

18

• Very low target group interaction (less errors)

Advantages

• Target group only have to charge the battery

• Battery life is less than the other option

Disadvantages

• Device configuration must be done by the manager

Page 19: Using the GPS for people tracking

Target group trainingOPTION 1:Schedule the GPS to acquire “n” measures every day automatically

(GPS device in NAV mode always)

Target group only have to charge the battery

19

Blue light should be flashing in sleeping mode

Orange light should be flashing when capturing data

Battery light red :Device has to be recharged

Battery light green :Device battery is charging. When it is OFF, battery is charged

Page 20: Using the GPS for people tracking

Device delivery to Target group2 OPTIONS

OPTION 2:

Ask the target group to acquire position every time they are in anew place (GPS device from OFF to LOG mode)

Advantages Disadvantages

20

• This option will optimize the battery consumption

Advantages

• The configuration of the device (schedules) is not necessary

• Target group have to switch the device from OFF to LOG mode

Disadvantages

• Risky option if target group forget to switch back to OFF (battery will run out)• No data will be recorder if the device is OFF

Page 21: Using the GPS for people tracking

Target group trainingOPTION 2:Ask the target group to acquire position , every time they are in a

new place (GPS device from OFF to LOG mode)

Target group have to switch from OFF mode to LOG mo de until orange light flashes and then switch it OFF

21

Orange light should be flashing when capturing data

Battery light red :Device has to be recharged

Battery light green :Device battery is charging. When it is OFF, battery is charged

Page 22: Using the GPS for people tracking

DEVICE CHARGE

Managers and teams working in field should provide the best option to charge the devices (same as those used for mobile phones) via USB cable

22

• Solar Panels• External Universal Battery Charger

Page 23: Using the GPS for people tracking

Recovery data from devices

1. Connect via USB to a PC or laptop with Q-Travel installed

23

2. Switch the device in LOG or NAV mode (not OFF)

Page 24: Using the GPS for people tracking

Recovery data from devices

3. Select “Tools” menu and click on “Options

4. Separate tracks when waypoints time difference is more

24

4. Separate tracks when waypoints time difference is more than e.g 720 min

Why?

Every day has e.g. 720 minutes. This example will show usone track per day (it´s just a visualization of data recorded, not other implications)

Page 25: Using the GPS for people tracking

Recovery data from devices

5. Click on “Read Device Log ” and import all tracks

25

The software will read and import to the computer all data storage in the

device

Page 26: Using the GPS for people tracking

Recovery data from devices

6. Select “Raw Data Manager ” to export and save all data

26

Why?

This function exports all the positions acquired to an Excel file.

Page 27: Using the GPS for people tracking

Recovery data from devices

Data should be upload to a MapPrint Service (Argongra Product) to:

• Have a secure data storage• Have a quick platform for data visualization• Have a productive platform for data analysis

27

• Have a productive platform for data analysis

Page 28: Using the GPS for people tracking

Further proccesses

7. Once all the data has been imported and saved, device can be “cleaned” of data if it is going to be used again.
