The Usher Hall is at the centre of musical life in Edinburgh and in our Spring guide you’ll find a host of concerts and event experiences that will make for a great night out. On offer are a wealth of classical favourites, international bands and stars that are not to be missed.

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s 11:12 Season continues featuring superb soloists such as the Scottish soprano Lisa Milne and a concert with their favourite Conductor Laureate, Neemi Järvi, as they continue to explore the Auld Alliance; virtuoso Nicola Benedetti and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra explore Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and other Italian gems; and Donald Runnicles conducting Brahms are another winning combination for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, featuring soprano Sarah Connolly.

Revel too in a rare all-Russian treat and enjoy the superlative sound of one of Russia’s oldest orchestras, the St Petersburg Philharmonic.

In the world of rock, pop and blues, The Hollies are marking their amazing fiftieth touring year in 2012; Joe Bonamassa, praised by none other than the ‘Godfather’ of blues himself BB King, brings the blues big time in March; Chris Rea will perform his chart-topping favourites and tracks from newer projects; and that international mega-star band of brothers, The Osmonds, visit Edinburgh on their last ever tour.

With superb acoustics and a fabulous atmosphere there really is no better place to hear live music than in the Usher Hall.

You will be rolling in the aisles as TV comedy genius Andrew Lawrence takes to the stage as part of a great line up for a raucous night of comedy (15 March).

RUSSIA REvISITED

Following on from a great concert with the Moscow Philharmonic last October, this season’s classical highlight is another all-Russian extravaganza. Enjoy an evening with Russia’s oldest orchestra, complete with a superb programme drawing from St Petersburg Philharmonic’s incredible repertoire (29 March).

He recently completed his first full cycle of the piano sonatas to huge acclaim and brings immense authority and a fascinatingly unworldly quality to this music.

In Stalin’s Russia, tragedy was banned. So how could a composer set Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to music? Luckily for us, Sergei Prokofiev knew a trick or two – and tonight, Paul Rissmann, the full RSNO and Music Director Stéphane Denève blow the gaff on one of the most passionate of all ballet scores. If you only know the piece as the theme tune to The Apprentice, trust us: you don’t know the half of it!

César Franck was a quiet man, but his grand, gothic spectacular of a symphony is crammed with the kind of tunes that you just can’t get out of your head. And conductor Fabien Gabel continues our celebration of the Auld Alliance with Berlioz’ highland fling of an overture.

Excellence, friendship, respect, courage, determination, inspiration and equality are at the core of Olympic and Paralympic values. Be inspired by this unique celebratory event featuring children and young people from The BIG Project in Broomhouse, several choirs and ten leading professional musicians, including Karine Polwart, in an interactive sing-a-long show, performing uplifting songs and displaying film footage of local children and young people exploring the relevance of these values in their own lives.

The centrepiece of the programme is a newly-commissioned work by singer-songwriter and pianist Kim Edgar called Breakthrough featuring all of the performers en masse, with a series of themes representing the Olympic rings, which begin to connect, overlap and interweave.

Johannes Brahms didn’t believe in God, but he believed in love. When he wrote his German Requiem, he aimed to console the living with some of the most moving, most heartfelt and – yes – most spiritual music ever written. Lawrence Renes conducts one of the world’s great operatic singers, Canadian bass-baritone Gerald Finley, in the latest masterpiece from Peter Lieberson, whose heart-rending Neruda Songs stormed the classical charts in the USA.

Donald Runnicles is joined by leading British mezzo Sarah Connolly and the men of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus in one of Brahms’s most moving vocal works, the marvellous Alto Rhapsody.

Fresh off his successful European tour with Black Country Communion, and rave reviews for their 2 album, Joe Bonamassa’s forthcoming UK solo tour will see him perform material from his current studio album Dust Bowl plus songs from his vast catalogue of albums including A New Day Yesterday, The Ballad of John Henry, Sloe Gin, and Black Rock. He will also preview some new songs from his forthcoming studio album due for release in late May.

A special night and a performance by one of Russia’s favourite orchestras conducted by one of the world’s greatest conductors. As Music Director and Principal Conductor of the St Petersburg Philharmonic since 1988, Yuri Temirkanov and his orchestra regularly undertake major international tours. Their performances have secured a legendary reputation and they have been lauded as ‘probably the world’s greatest orchestra’ by the Guardian. They have an incredibly rich historical heritage and two of the symphonies on their programme are testament to earlier troubled times. Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony was written amidst revolution and the Shostakovich was conceived whilst under duress from the Soviet authorities.

Glasgow-born conductor Douglas Boyd brings his trademark verve to our latest musical salute to the Auld Alliance, and ends the night with Beethoven’s firecracker of a symphony. First, though, there’s the pure romance of Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto with the sensational Ingrid Fliter and Fauré’s enchanting Pavane.

And you’ll be blown away by the sheer elemental power of Sibelius’ tempestuous First Symphony. In between, expect poetry and finesse from pianist Christian Blackshaw in Beethoven’s youthful concerto.

The Osmond Brothers have been entertaining sold out crowds throughout the world for decades and this year marks their biggest ever UK Tour.

No-one knows where the nickname comes from but its suggestion of oriental brilliance is picked up in the rest of this colourful programme with Rameau’s sensational dances from Les Paladins.

Since 2003, City Praise has drawn capacity audiences from churches all over Edinburgh and the Lothians. The event is a non-denominational service of Christian worship, led by the Exile Band, Choir and Chamber Orchestra. In 2010 the event also went to Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall, and now returns to Edinburgh for 2012. Join with a couple of thousand Christians from all over Edinburgh to praise and worship the King. Admission is free, and there will be an offering to help towards expenses.

There are 12 wheelchair accessible spaces (ten in the Stalls and two in the Grand Circle). Please advise the Box Office when booking if you require one. Assistance dogs are welcome.

For hearing aid users, a loop system is in place. To access this facility, please switch your hearing aid to the ‘T’ position.

HOW TO FIND USThe Usher Hall is located on Lothian Road, at the west end of Edinburgh, between the Royal Lyceum Theatre and the Traverse Theatre.

The Usher Hall is close to Haymarket and Waverley train stations (a walk of about 15 minutes to each station). A taxi rank is situated opposite the Hall by the Sheraton Hotel.
