User Centered Design Process

User Centered Design (UCD) process is extremely successful to create user friendly applications. UCD increases the chances of applications being accepted by end user.

User Profiling: Understanding User

Varun is 22 years old.

He belongs to Delhi.

Speaks Hindi and English, fluent in both.

He studied B.Sc from a collage in Delhi and also did computer courses from NIIT.

He has been working since 1 years in a leading software development center in Noida.

Varun stays in a shared accommodation.

Loves to party with friends and watching movies

Varun Mishra

Internet Usage

Uses internet to look for more information, booking tickets, writing emails, chatting with friends.

Uses internet in the office. Does not have a computer at home.

Most of the sites (including naukri) are firewalled in the office. Varun has to access internet from café.

He usually goes to the internet cafe during weekends when he has some time.

Insights Since Varun access internet cyber cafe, the

machine used may not always be the same.

Internet behavior is usually task oriented and not browse oriented.

There may not always be lot of time in hand when working on the internet.

Recommendations

Faster/ better search to get the most relevant results. Shorter registration process to avoid drop out.

Customization/ recognizing IP address may not help.

Relook at the task flow for a Goal Directed approach rather than an Experimental approach.

Contextual Innovation

“Contextual innovation is a discipline of understanding users in their natural (social, cultural, official etc) environment”

Definition: Any products and services need to be redesigned for new markets to fulfill their cultural, technological, attitudinal requirement. User Interface StructureApplication GUI

“A successful User interface structure determines 80% of usability. Innovative user interface structures increases the

efficiency and effectiveness of application data and features”

Features BenefitsDesigning of a primary navigational framework and a set of primary application windows.

Users get the information they need quickly and efficiently, without frustration.

If needed, reengineering of the workflow to fit the users' conceptual model of the application.

The purpose of the application is immediately clear, and window thrashing is eliminated.

Amending the structure's visual presentation.

New customers react with a positive initial impression, and repeated customers find a clean, uncluttered look.

Preparing for subsequent usability testing and detailed design efforts.

Provides an extensible basis for future development.

Detailed DesignApplication GUI

“Detailed User Interface design completes the application so that they are visually compelling, easy to navigate & user-friendly”

Features BenefitsIt is to apply field-tested, specific human factors design principles with respect to color, layout, and wording.

The result is designs that are visually appealing, clutter-free, and ergonomic.

There is a proper blending of effective labeling systems, object-oriented text presentation, and appropriate use of color and graphics.

These work together to enhance content structure and simplify decision making.

Content is organized and screens are designed to minimize the user's visual, intellectual, mental, and motor work.

The designs fit the users' tasks, motivate them, and optimize screen performance.

Detailed screen design can be applied to an overall design standard too.

This sets a direction for further design.

Cross-Cultural DesignFor Varied Geographic Location

There are many dimensions to cultural diversity. Products and interfaces designed for one culture may not fit another. Furthermore, methods and tools used to design products and interfaces need to be adapted in this culturally diverse world. There cannot be a one-size-fits-all approach. Cultural differences need to be understood and addressed while delivering solutions within optimized cost and effort.
