Recruiters and Peers are Looking

It’s time to come to terms with the fact that recruiters and your peers are researching you on social media. Since they’re checking out your online presence anyway, you might as well enhance your public image.

Social media is a powerful tool that connects you with professionals, school alumni, recruiters and potential

employers.

Rules for Successful Social Media Interaction

1. Listen First – It’s always important to understand your audience before socializing. Know how they use each platform, what they want to communicate and what they expect from you before you decide what to say.

2. Keep it Professional– This is about using Social Media to connect with professionals like yourself who may be able to help you along the way.

3. 10 Second Rule – Always reread and consider what you are about to say in the digital world before you hit send! You can’t take it back.

4. Gain the Trust of Your Audience – Audiences have unique goals. Act as a global concierge, gaining their trust by having a two-way conversation and providing them value as they accept your invitations to connect and read your content.

5. Define Your Own Voice – Set up guidelines for what you will and won’t talk about. Be clear up front as to what you hope to discuss on each social network.

7. Keep it Consistent – Social media is a commitment. Regular consistency will keep you top of mind with your peers.

8. Don’t Be the Last to Know – Set up alerts & RSS feeds in your social management tool to inform you instantly on industry news & events so you can share immediately.

9. Associate With Strong Brands – Find and leverage strong brands which can elevate your own personal brand.

10.Make Sure – When you create or share posts, always attribute who the original author is (if not already shown in repost/retweet/share etc.).

Time Warner Cable Confidential

The Do’s and Don’ts of Social Media

THE DOS• Make wise use of privacy settings on Facebook and other social sites. Change your privacy

settings if you are serious about creating a brand for yourself. You may want to make it less restrictive so that others can see your information.

• Keep your tweets and status updates free of grammar and spelling mistakes, excessive emoticons, and gratuitous netspeak.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Social Media

THE DON'TS• Don't post party pictures or videos. If you already have, remove them.• Be careful who you friend and the organizations you like on Facebook. If they're tagging you in

compromising photos or making inappropriate postings, shut them down.• Be careful of the organizations you like on Facebook.• Don't make negative, insulting, or petty posts. Employers are looking for positive team

members.• Don't discuss hot topics. There are certain subjects that should not be discussed on your social

media network. If you would not bring a topic up in a meeting with a client, don’t do it online either. For example, religion, politics, sex, partying, celebrity scandals, etc.

2. Moz’s Guide to Twitter – Moz has a great guide to social media, including a chapter that’s all about Twitter. It provides some fun trivia about Twitter, and then walks you through strategies and tactics.

3. MakeUseOf, The Complete Twitter Guide – If you want to dive in deeper, MakeUseOf has a helpful guide to Twitter. It’s 40 pages long, so you’ll get a lot of information.

4. Twitter, Getting Started with Twitter – There’s no better source from which to learn Twitter than Twitter itself. It has a helpful Getting Started Guide.
