UK dental laboratories have relatively low staff numbers, due to the smart application of technology and processes. Innovation has been key to their success.

The UK has been at the forefront of leading edge dentistry for over a century. The focus is on innovative products and materials that deliver better results for patients for longer. There are 21,000 practising dentists in the UK today compared to 16,000 in the early 1990s, according to the General Dental Practitioners Association. Science has expanded the horizons of dentistry, making it more like cosmetic surgery than basic healthcare, and more challenging to those in the profession.

Tremendous advances have been made in the dental sector in recent years. Non-invasive treatments, digital dentistry and advances in materials are just one side of this progress, as leaders in dental practice also transform their surgeries into more relaxing environments. Today, a visit to the dentist is a relatively painless affair due to advances in non-invasive methods. Treatment with ozone and photoactive disinfection and digital dentistry makes crown and fitting of new teeth simpler. Stem cell technology, is exploring the possibility of growing new teeth to replace those lost through decay or accident.

Scientists at the University of Leeds are investigating novel aesthetic dental restorative materials, with work into mica-based dental glass ceramics, which are particularly suitable for chairside processing. Dentistry schools at the University of Leeds and the University of Sheffield are active in the next generation of glass ceramics with high strength and fracture toughness that can bond to enamel, dentine and bone. Technology developments impacting upon the dental market include new bioceramics, improved alloys, fillers and cements, composites, regenerative materials, bone substitutes and drug eluting meshes.

The UK Dental Appliances Manufacturer Audit Scheme (DAMAS) plays an important role in supporting the manufacture of dentistry related devices. The DAMAS scheme improves efficiency, reduces waste, cuts remake levels and saves times, this in turn enables cost savings to be passed onto customers.

Dentistry

The UK’s dental industry has a highly trained, highly skilled workforce. UK dental laboratories are well regarded, particularly by the private sector, with best performing labs working on implants.

The UK in-vitro diagnostics market turnover is currently valued at over £1 billion, comprising test kits, reagents and associated analytical instrumentation - anything from simple over-the-counter pregnancy kits to sophisticated products needed for the diagnosis of cancer.

The UK is a leader and has been instrumental in developing IVD devices for testing cardiovascular risks, cancer, diabetes, infectious diseases and osteoporosis. These products have the potential to revolutionise the way in which healthcare is delivered, and to cement the UK as a leader in IVD. It is the aim of UK Healthcare industry to spread awareness of the importance of diagnostics in overall healthcare management. With rapid innovations in the field of medical science, diagnostics is really pushing the envelope on newer kits and techniques that aid not only disease treatment, but also prevention.

Key measures announced in December 2011 to boost the UK’s life sciences sector will help deliver more effective and accurate diagnostics tests leading to significant benefits not only to patients and the NHS, but also to overseas markets like India.

As a leader in healthcare innovation and an essential part of the UK life sciences sector, these new measures will support the IVD industry to innovate and continue to develop effective, accurate and efficient tests to improve outcomes for patients and save resources for the NHS.

Currently, 70% of all clinical decisions are based on the results of testing using IVDs. More innovative diagnostic tests will allow healthcare professionals to target treatments better and more effectively, and enable earlier interventions.

Recently, a simple and quick do-it-yourself (DIY) kit test that can be carried out at home, for women to check for early signs of cancer, was developed in the UK. This new test kit has been defined as an invaluable addition to the detection of precancerous changes of the cervix. The test detects changes in genetic material in cells affected by HPV which causes most cases of cervical cancer and can be purchased for about £115.

Innovations in IVD are transforming the way healthcare is delivered.

In-Vitro Diagnostics

The UK has an excellent track record of developing and exporting world-class in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) products.

FAST TRACK DIAGNOSTICS (FTD) is an innovative company producing infectious disease detection kits using Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR).

The company designs, develops and produces a wide range of multiplex assays, which enable the healthcare provider to identify a broad spectrum of viral, bacterial, parasite and fungal infections that cause many disease syndromes such as respiratory (e.g. influenza or pneumonia), gastrointestinal (e.g. diarrhoea), meningitis, sexually transmitted infections, tropical fever and many more.

By adopting a syndromic approach the clinician gets answers to nearly all possible causes of the disease syndrome without having to select particular pathogens to exclude.

The tests only require RT-PCR thermocycler instruments that are widely available and supplied by a range of manufacturers. The assays have identical protocols, have a high degree of sensitivity and specificity, and the results are available in less than two hours. These aspects make the FTD kits highly efficient and cost-effective.

The company has recently hired a Country Manager in India and will be opening an Indian subsidiary by Q3 2012.

Located in Scotland, United Kingdom, OMEGA DIAGNOSTICS GROUP PLC is an AIM-listed public company on the London Stock Exchange. technology it means patients can take their therapy home, and be closer to their family whilst still getting the benefit of NHS therapy.

NHS Foundation Trust Overall winner of The Cardiovascular Innovation Awards 2011 have developed a new medical device used for the treatment of patients following open heart surgery. After coming off the bypass machine, some patients’ hearts struggle for a short while in returning to normal function and at present these patients may require a very expensive balloon pump to be inserted to assist the heart. This new machine will remove the need for a proportion of the patients to have a balloon pump inserted, which is currently a very invasive and costly procedure and also means that a solution is available at press of a button, unlike current systems which take time to organise. This device has huge potential for growth in India & China.

Advances in operating tables enable the most demanding surgical techniques and faster movement of high risk patients. Surgeons are benefiting from scientifically improved lighting that improves visibility during delicate operations. Innovations in imaging are enabling leading surgeons to connect with other surgeons located hundreds of miles away during operations that require the input of multiple experts.

Oxford’s Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre is developing, manufacturing and testing new devices to treat back pain. The devices generate feedback from the skin overlying the lower back using vibrators, with the aim of reducing chronic pain. Worcestershire’s Motion Analysis Research and Rehabilitation Centre specialises in examining the process of motion, with the technology being used for rehabilitation. The centre also has a fully equipped physiotherapy and podiatry facility.

The UK Medical industry is going very well. In 2011 the UK medical technology sector had 3,113 companies, which employ close to 64,000 people and have a combined annual turnover of £ 15 bn, with many innovations launched every year. The demand is stronger than ever before because of the ageing of population in mature economies and the huge population size and growth rate in some countries, like in the BRIC countries.

Technologies are also much more sophisticated than ever before, allowing for worldwide technology breakthroughs in

patient surgeries and treatments. The sector is widely distributed across the UK, with the highest concentrations of turnover and employment in the West Midlands, East of England and the South East of England. The sector continues to be dominated by SMEs which make up 99% of all its companies.

BRANDON MEDICAL is the UK’s leading medical lighting specialist with over 45 years healthcare experience. Our medical lighting products, operating theatre lights, medical video and medical AV systems are in use throughout the world, supported by an extensive distributor network.

In recent years Brandon Medical have developed a next-generation lighting technology called HD-LED®. This ultra efficient light source has been designed specifically for medical use, but has wide applicability across all lighting. The key benefit over standard LED technology is the very high colour quality, high lumen output and zero cost added to the LED.

HD-LED has the unique feature of full spectrum colour rendition across the full visible spectrum. This allows colours to be noticeably more vivid and clear in comparison to other lighting technologies. Medical lights using HD-LED produce more useable light. This is used to create larger beams of light and bigger illuminated fields than any other surgical lights.

Red balance control allows surgeons to adjust the visible red colour rendition. This characteristic helps surgeons to accurately distinguish between similar coloured tissues during surgery. Surgeons can select the best level of red light during surgery in order to suit their own individual red vision.

Brandon Medical is the first company in the world to launch surgical lights using the new innovative HD-LED technology.

Healthcare Services & Public Private Partnerships

The efficiency of private sector companies is combined with health excellence of public sector providers, to run health services in line with agreed performance indicators for set periods of time. In trying to bring the public and private sector together, management skills and financial acumen of the business community help to deliver value for money.

There are many successful examples of PPP in India, but the one that comes first to mind is the Yeshasvini Health scheme in Karnataka. The Yeshasvini Co-operative Farmer’s Healthcare Scheme is a health insurance scheme targeted at the poor in the state. It was set up as a joint effort by the leading private, super-specialty heart hospital in Bangalore, and by the Department of Co-operatives of the Government of Karnataka. The Government pays Rs. 2.50 of the total monthly premium of Rs. 10 that is paid toward the monthly premium, by each member of the Cooperative Societies.

The United Kingdom has developed considerable expertise in the use of Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) in the health sector through NHS trust, to establish the world’s biggest and best primary care system with over 280 schemes worth some £13.6 billion, making it the largest health PPP programme in the world. Such projects

have ranged from the provision of clean, modern, purpose-built premises for general practitioners through to complex tertiary hospitals such as the 1,248 bed Barts and London Royal Hospital which is a centre of cancer and cardiac excellence and the largest PPP hospital project of its kind in the world.

On the public sector side, organisations like Partnerships UK (PUK) and the Department of Health Private Finance Unit, have been heavily involved in helping the UK Government deliver its wide range of PPP health schemes. The UK public sector has developed a wealth of best practice in PPP project preparation, contract development, value for money assessment and contract management.

The UK private sector has also developed extensive financial, legal, technical, project management, construction and facilities management expertise, to support both the public sector procuring authorities and the private sector bidders as well as to finance, construct, maintain and operate these facilities.

Many other countries with PPP programmes look to the UK model as an established starting point for their own schemes.

Computer technology is central to many of the healthcare industry’s developments, making IT a major growth area in the sector. IT can be applied to all aspects of patient care and assessment. The Healthcare information technology sector in the UK comprises over 120 companies which have identified openings in clinical laboratory systems, healthcare administration, patient records and clinical procedures. Hardware products are also currently being developed for use in clinical applications.

The largest IT project in the UK healthcare sector to date is the ‘National Programme for IT’ (NPfIT), which is being delivered by the new Department of Health agency ‘NHS Connecting for Health’ to improve patient care and services in the NHS. Over the next ten years the NPfIT will connect over 30,000 GPs in England to almost 300 hospitals, and give patients access to their personal health and care information, transforming the way the NHS works. One key strand of NPfIT is telemedicine, which will allow the re-engineering of service delivery and give the public fast and convenient access to information, advice and care via telephone and online services.

BT is the developer of a secure managed network for the NHS called NHSnet. Users can share information, access information from other NHSnet users and exchange emails through the system. Research in Motion® (RIM), whose BlackBerry® devices are being used to help the transplant team access the latest information about patients on waiting lists at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, and thus simplify the process of making complex decisions about patient care.

Healthcare Information Technology

Healthcare information technology is being regarded as an essential investment for enhancing quality, and the UK is currently leading the way.

BT eHospital addresses all aspects of the creation of a new-build hospital at every stage from green field site to hand-over. It can also add and integrate specific ICT products and services into existing healthcare environments to provide the advantages of a digital approach without the cost of complete rebuilds.

BRENMOOR are leading the way with innovative patient identification solutions. They are market leaders in the UK and export their products successfully in Europe and the Middle East.

Every 4 seconds, someone in the world is identified with a Brenmoor printed wristband.

The product range is innovative, safe, durable, easy to use and extremely comfortable for patients.

Correct patient identification guarantees that a hospital can quickly and easily identify a patient in their care. By taking patient identification a step further, barcodes can be incorporated into the printed details and this then allows care, blood and drugs to be cross checked with a patient to help keep the patient’s journey through the hospital as safe and stress free as possible.

The wristbands can be printed directly from a hospital IT system or by using stand alone software, both methods produce extremely high quality print.

Printed in seconds using economically priced thermal printers, the wristbands have no need for inks or ribbons as the technology used to manufacture the wristbands ensures that the text and barcodes are produced by heat from inside the printer.

The wristbands are then completely resistant to soaps, water and alcohol foam, creams and gels commonly used in hospitals today. They will remain intact on a patient’s wrist for many weeks.

The range includes wristbands for adults, children and new born babies.
