This gate leads to Patio dos Arcos, whose Moorish arches gallery offers beautiful views of the mountains.

After the second door , amazed the Arch of Triton , a strange creature half man half fish, an allegory of the creation of the world.

SPAIN: SEGOVIA CATHEDRAL(by Cathy)

Segovia Cathedral, affectionately known as the “Lady of cathedrals”, looms over Segovia's historic centre. This splendid temple built at the highest point of the town is regarded as the last Gothic cathedral to be built in Spain. Fronting the historic Plaza Mayor, it stands on the place where Elizabeth I, was once proclaimed Queen of Castille in 1474.It was built between 1525-1577 in a late Gothic style, yet constructed during the Renaissance by Juan Gil de Hontañón and his son Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón. The construction began under the reign of the King Carlos Vafter the fire in the old Romanesque cathedral in the year 1520. The prior cathedral of Segovia had stood adjacent to the Alcazar, and had been used by the besieged royal armies in their defense. The building has a ground plan with three naves, lateral chapels and a semicircular sanctuary with an ambulatory with fine tracery windows set, and numerous stained glass.

The interior is characterized by unity of style (late Gothic), except for the dome, built around 1630 by Pedro de Brizuela. Overwhelming in splendor it possesses three entrances: the Puerta del Perdón, the work of Juan Guas, is on the main façade, while on the southern face we have the San Geroteo and San Frutos Doors. It measures 105 m by 50 m and stands 33 m high at the main nave. The main altarpiece is made of marble, jasper and bronze. It was consecrated in the year 1768.

Across from the entrance, on the southern transept, is a door opening into the late-Gothic cloister, which is older than the cathedral.Off the cloister, a small museum of religious art, installed partly in the first-floor chapter house, has a white-and-gold 17th-century ceiling, a late example of Mudejar coffered ceiling. The museum contains jewelry, paintings, and a collection of rare antique manuscripts.

The interior, illuminated by 16th-century Flemish windows, is light, bare and uncluttered, with a large Gothic choir placed in the center. Among the most prominent chapels are that of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel; the Chapel of San Andrés, and the chapel of the Deposition with the recumbent Christ by Gregorio Fernández. The main reredos of this majestic work of majesty and artistry, was carved by Francisco Sabatini, and is dedicated to the Virgin of the Peace.
