THE CATHEDRAL PARISH AND CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF SAINT AUGUSTINE ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 14, 2017

Mission Statement of the Cathedral Parish St. Augustine, Florida

We are Christ’s eyes, ears, mouth, hands, and feet -

sent out to do justice, especially for the poor and oppressed,

to minister to the needs of the community, to be faithful stewards of God’s creation -

awakening faith among the hopeless, and promoting life even within the culture

of death.

Reminders:

If you would like a hearing-assistance device that will help you in hearing the Mass, please come to the sacristy before Mass and see one of the sacristans. We have six devices that can be loaned at each Mass.

If you need a low-gluten host so you can receive our Lord in His Most Precious Body at Holy Communion, please come to the sacristy before Mass and let the sacristan know.

We provide a shuttle between the parking lot at Cathedral Parish School and the Cathedral for the 5:00 p.m. Masses on Satur-days and Sundays. The shuttle begins at about 4:15 and will get you back to your car after Mass.

Extraordinary Ministers to the homebound urgently needed Cathedral Parish has an urgent need for Ministers to the Home-bound, bringing the Holy Eucharist to men and women who are confined to their homes as a result of surgery, age, or chronic ill-ness. This ministry allows the homebound to be refreshed with the Eucharist brought to them by members of the community, so they feel supported by their parish brothers and sisters. The outreach is very personal, with the minister bringing the Eucharist, spending 15 or 20 minutes visiting the sick person, and offering them a copy of the Sunday bulletin. Please contact Deacon Chuck Kanaszka, [email protected] or 824-2806, to offer your assistance with this important ministry.

Solemn Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

CHAPEL OF THE CATHEDRAL

A Historic, Over-the-Top Amount!!!! Thanks to all who made this happen!!!

We are happy to report that the 2017 Cathedral Festival netted over

$ 203,000.00 Many thanks to our Festival Chair, Kevin Partel and

his team, all the great volunteers and to all who came out to support this year’s Festival!!!

This is obviously the best Festival ever. The proceeds will go to help us meet the extra expenses that have been in-curred as we help Cathedral Parish School recover from damages sustained from Hurricane Matthew. It will also assist us in providing for needs at the Cathedral Parish School Early Education Center. Thanks for supporting Catholic education in our community!

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK “I remember my mother’s prayers and they have

always followed me. They have clung to me all my life.”

-- Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)

A Happy and Blessed Mother’s Day to all our mothers, grandmothers and the many women who are “other mothers” to us. Today is a special day in our nation to honor those whose gift of motherhood sustains us through life, death and everything in between. Whether living or deceased, take time to give thanks to God for the blessings received from your mother, your wife, and those others who show that there is nothing quite as strong as maternal love.

With the assurance of my prayers -- Love, Father Tom

Congratulations, Graduates!!! Over the next couple of weeks, the Class of 2017 from our local high schools and elementary schools will be graduating. St. Joseph Academy will have graduation exercises this week and Cathedral Parish School will do so the following week. And we can’t forget those in our public schools as well as those who are home-schooled. To all of you and your families --

Congratulations and best wishes for your future endeavors!!!

Stewardship reflection for the Fifth Sunday of Easter

The word “church” finds its roots in the Greek word ecclesia. However, a correct translation of that word is actually “an assembly of people, called out of their homes into a public meeting place.” Thus, the Church is really the people who make it up; the use of the term in relation to a building has developed through time, but we must never forget that it is we who are indeed the Church.

That is a basic part of something St. Peter writes in our Second Reading. Peter says, “… like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house,” in reference to the members. He is saying in effect that we are called to build a church with living stones, namely ourselves. We all also understand that for a structure to be most effective, every element is needed to keep it strong.

We, as the Church and as our parish, are no different. We need each person, each part of what is really the Church, to be like a liv-ing stone, active and involved. We are a faith community, not just a community of worshipers, but a community to reach out and serve others. To really do that we need each member to offer something of himself or herself.

In a message to a celebration about the Church being the peo-ple, Pope Francis said, “It is isolation that harms, not sharing. Being among people does not mean merely being open toward others, but also letting others get close to us.” To be open, to be Church, re-quires each of us to do a part.

Boots on the Ground ministry serves Hurricane Matthew victims… and YOU can help! "Boots on the Ground” ministry is a group of caring Catholics from many surrounding faith communities. We are funded by, and affiliated with, St. Johns Housing Partnership and our

local St. Vincent de Paul Society. We are assisting in the recovery of people affected by Hurricane Matthew last October: families who have asked for help from SVDP, and have been deemed worthy of assistance. These are people who have fallen through the cracks, and are in dire need. Can you give of some of your Time, Talent, or Treasure to help someone who has no other means to help them-selves? Our usual work day is every Saturday, 8 a.m. until… whatev-er you can spare of your precious time. If you can’t get there until later in the day, whatever time you can offer will make a difference. All skill sets are needed: carpentry, painting, yard work, cleaning; or perhaps you could provide lunch and drinks. It is all time well spent! If you can only help during the week, we have needs for that also, and will get your boots on the ground. If you would like to help, please contact Dennis Kasten, (904) 377-1100 or [email protected]. God bless you!

May a Roman Catholic receive

Holy Communion at another

religious denomination’s services? The easiest answer to this is “no.” However, like everything in

law (both church and civil), there are exceptions to the rule.

First, a Catholic may not, under any circumstance, receive Communion in a Protestant church’s religious service. This is covered in the Church’s Code of Canon Law, canon 844. Just as non-Catholic Christians are not generally permitted to receive Holy Communion at a Catholic liturgy, neither may Catholics receive at a Protestant church. The Holy See’s Instruction Re-demptionis Sacramentum (issued in March 2004) reiterates this in paragraph 84.

Now for the exception: if a baptized Roman Catholic who has already received first Holy Communion is present for the celebra-tion of the Eucharist in one of the “uniate” Catholic Churches, e.g., Byzantine Catholic, Maronite Catholic, etc., then the Roman Catholic may receive Holy Communion. In the Orthodox Churches, while Roman Catholic law would permit you to re-ceive, the laws of the Orthodox Church do not. So, in this latter case, it is best to check with the Orthodox priest who is the cele-brant of the Eucharist to see if he would permit you to receive.

NEED PRAYERS? If you or someone you

know is in need of prayers, call 599-9455 or 824-2806 to be added to our prayer list.

Cathedral Parish Parking: TRUE OR FALSE? Cathedral parishioners have a right to park in both the

“Bank of America lot” and the “Old Wells Fargo lot.”

FALSE. Parking in either of these lots is a privilege, not a

right. Sadly, some of our own parishioners abuse this privi-lege and are no longer allowed to park in these lots.
