Thankstogamechanging innovationinwatertechnology,agriculturalyieldsareupbyapproximately25%usinglesswaterandfertilizer,aquacultureyieldshavebeenshowntoincrease10fold,riversystemsarebecleanedforrelease intoouroceansandwecaneveneliminate limescalebuildup incoolingtowersandpipes,withouttheneedfortoxicchemicals-allowingreuseofwater.IndryaridregionsofAustralia,thisisaveryattractiveproposition.Andthesearejustthetipoftheiceberg.

Earlier this year, theWorld Economic Forum suggested 80% of the US$3.2 trillion value of the globalconsumergoodsectoriscurrentlylostirrecoverablyeachyearduetothecurrentinefficientlinear‘make,takewaste’model.Two studies in recentmonths have put some hard figures to the economic benefits that a shift to thecircular economy could bring across Europe. Anindependent reportcommissioned by resourcemanagement business Veolia and produced by Imperial College London, found that a combination ofclosing the loop on resource use andmoving to a service rather than product based economy has thepotentialtoadd£29billiontoUKGrossDomesticProductoverthenextdecade.

TheGrowthWithinreportbytheEllenMacArthurFoundationsuggestsapan-Europeanshifttoacirculareconomycouldcreateanetbenefitof€1.8trillionforEuropeaneconomiesby2030.

2. HistoryoftheBlueEconomy

TheconceptoftheBlueEconomywasseededbytheUNUniversityin1994(3yearspriortotheadoptionofthe Kyoto Protocol) when the Rector of the UNUniversity Heitor Gurgulino de Souza supported by theJapaneseGovernment invitedBelgianborneconomistandentrepreneurGunterPauli toestablishathinktank,whichwastocreateaneweconomicsystemthatgeneratednowasteandnoemissions,yetcreatedjobs, contributed to social capital and did not entail a higher cost of goods, to sit alongside the KyotoProtocol.

Aspartof theprocess,PauliestablishedtheZeroEmissionsResearchand Initiatives (ZERI) inSwitzerlandwiththesoleobjectivetoimplementpioneeringcasesthatcoulddemonstrateascientificallyfeasibleandeconomicallyviablemodelofproductandconsumption. Some3000caseswere identified tohelpmoveindustryandcommercetowardssustainability–independentofsubsidiesortaxbreaks.Theirfocuswasoninnovationthatcouldbebundledintoasystem,thatcouldworkasecosystemsdo,clusteringinnovations

developedbydiverseplayers,makingamoreefficientuseofalltheexisting,unfailingforcesdescribedbythelawofphysics.

In 2004, 340 innovations were ultimately shortlisted, submitted to a team of corporate strategists,academics,financiers,investigativejournalistsandpublicpolicymakers.Innovationsweretobeshortlistedtoatop100–butwithin2yearsfinancialmarketscollapsedanddevelopingcountrieslost50millionjobs.

Pauliwentbacktothedrawingboard,aswhatwasconceived,wasnowinadequate.

A new team undertook a complete reassessment of all the information before them and examined thedynamics of the current economicmodel’s demise in the light of the innovations they had catalogued.Theyspottedthephoenixofnewgrowththatseemedtoshiftthelogicofshorttermresultsandbonusestoonethatgiveaworldconstrainedbylimitedresources,theabilitytorespondtopeople’sbasicneedswithwhat they already had available locally. One thatwould change thedominatebusinessparadigmdrivenbycuttingcostsandeconomiesofscaletoonethataddedvalueandcreatedjobs.

Thefinal100innovationsdrewinspirationfromtheabilityofecosystemstoalwaysevolvetohigherlevelsofefficiencywithreadilyavailableresources,tocascadenutrientsandenergy,toleavenothingtowaste–toutilizetheabilityofallcontributorsandrespondtothebasicneedsofall.ThiswaslaidoutasaReporttotheClubofRomein2010titled“TheBlueEconomy”.

The Blue Economy is now available in some 38 languages, and is supported by 365 children’s fables –breakingdown thecomplexityof theconcepts into simple stories tohelp futuregenerationsunderstandtheconceptsofsystemsthinking,physicsand innovation inspiredbynature. NewcasestudiesdepictingBlueEconomyinnovationclustersarebeingproducedmonthly–providingnewbusinessmodelstoinspireentrepreneurs to shape a new economy based on competitive innovations, creating JOBS and SOCIALCAPITAL. Blue Economy experts have unprecedented direct access to Blue Economy innovation, casestudiesandresearchandtheopportunitytopromotenewcasestudiesfromAustraliatoaglobalmarket.

It’s a globalmovement and one that can bring great advantages to Australia ifgovernmentsembraceit.

1. Establishmentofabio-refinerybyconvertinganexistingorsoontobedefunctrefinery,whichusesfeedstocksuchasthistlesgrownonlowvalueunproductivewaterscarelandtoproducevaluable oils. Thistles currently make up 50% of the feedstock for a new generation bio-refineryinSardinia.Yearonegenerated$600minoilsales.

Oilfromthistlesisblendedwithothersourcesincludingoliveoilresidueandusedcookingoils,toformthebasisofthird-generationMater-Bibiopolymers.Afterextractingoilfromtheseeds,theremainingmaterialisusedbylocalfarmersasanimalfeed,whilethebiomassisusedtofueltheplantitself.

2. Establishment of a silk industry to support a new era in bio-medical products that seesmulberrysilkspun intothegeometryof theGoldenOrbSpiderandusedasanalternativetotitanium in medical devices such as sutures, nerve repair, bone graft, cartilage repair andorthopedicdevices.Itcanalsobeusedtoreplacetitaniuminarangeofconsumergoodssuchasrazorblades.

This innovationcompeteswithminedtitaniumbutsavesenergy,capturesCO2andgeneratesjobs while planting trees and growing topsoil. And it does so at about 40% of the price ofdiggingtitaniumoutoftheground.

Thisindustrycanseetherejuvenationofdegradedfarminglandandthegenerationofupto15millionjobsin10years.

3. Establishmentofoneormorestonepaperproductionfacilities.Stonepaperismadewithouttreesorpaper–utilizingbuildingandorminingwaste.Oneplant(thatcanbebuiltforaroundhalf the price of an equivalent paper pulp production plant), can provide employment forapproximately1,000people.

StonePaper is energyefficient, acid freepaper that isneither syntheticnorwoodpulp fibrebased.StonePaperisanaturalproductmanufacturedfromcalciumcarbonate,CaCO3powderusingproprietaryadditivesasabondingagent.80.9%ofthepaper ismadeupofwastefromthebuildingindustry.Offcutsandwastestonerock,marbleandtilesaswellaswastematerialatexistinglimestonequarriesaregroundtorecoverCalciumCarbonate.StonePaperalsohasa lowcarbonemission. Itusessignificantly lessenergy toproduce thanwoodfiberpaper.Itgeneratesnoeffluentinitsmanufacture(airborneorsolid),andrequiresnowater,acidorbleachduringproduction.Anytrimmingsorwastepaperfromproductionisrecycledtomakenewpaper.Itisbothrecyclableandphotodegradable/compostable.

NorthernAustraliacouldbeaBlueEconomyinnovationshowcasefortheAsiaPacificRegionNorthernAustraliaisalreadyahighlysoughtaftertouristdestination,educationhubandakeycentreforresearchanddevelopment (especially relatingtotropicalmedicineandknowledge). IfNorthernAustraliafocuseson innovation inspiredbynaturewith zerowaste that theBlueEconomybrings, it canalsobeashowcasetoAsiaintermsofbusinessinnovationandbestpractice.AsoutlinedbytheStateoftheTropicsReport in2014,acrossabroadrangeofenvironmental,socialandeconomic indicators, the Tropics emerges as a critical global region with a unique set of developmentchallengesandopportunities.It covers40%of theworld’s surfacearea,buthostsapproximately80%of its terrestrialbiodiversityandmorethan95%ofitsmangroveandcoralreef-basedbiodiversity.Thetropicalworld’seconomyisgrowing20%fasterthantheRestoftheWorldandmanytropicalnationsareimportantcontributorstoworldtrade,politicsandinnovation.AfocusontheBlueEconomycanalsocontributetothisgrowth.TheTropicsisalsohometo40%oftheworld’spopulation,and55%oftheworld’schildrenundertheageof five years old. By 2050, some 50 per cent of theworld’s population and close to 60%of theworld’schildrenareexpectedtoresideintheTropics.Advances in technology are providing a platform for expanding business opportunities, enhancingprospects to reduce poverty, and improving education and health outcomes. Incomes are higher,infrastructureismoreaccessibleandlifeexpectancyisthehighestithaseverbeen.Whiletherehavebeenrapid improvements, assessment of key indicators of wellbeing such as life expectancy and economicoutputpercapitashowthattheTropicsstilllagsbehindtheRestoftheWorld.Theregionisthereforeatacriticaljuncture.There has never been amore important time to harness the Blue Economy as adriverofjobs,innovation,educationandinvestmentinAustralia.
