This year the Swans promoted the Lions Cup (Knock- out Competition for--High--Scbu...als-·tbruuf•ho ut the State) . By far the most successful p0rfo r manc e and the surprise of the competi tion was Benilde High of Bankstown winning through to the quarter - finals . A tribute to their coach as wFll as t o their determination and school spirit as only one playe r is a cur r ent weekend playe r .

In the t>atur day inter club scEne the Cl ub was quite succ~ssful , both on the field as outlin(d at the Annual Presentation andoff, with a number of social ~ vents f or players and parents .

We L' tartt:d the seaso n with tbc:. potenti a l to r aise two teams in l.'.·a ch of th e ages U/9 , U/11, and U713 and with excess players in U/15aid U/17 which might have b(en Exploited had all rEsources be.en nvailable . The ground we were able to get finally was formed by the utilising 0f two rugby rectangl es to form a small ground , suitable: f or r:odifiEd rules . It will not bE: available in 1983 , so we believe, and steps are being takEn to have the Kelso ground commissionEd for ntxt yea r .

Administrativc:ly , we now m0ve ontJ the s econd phasE o f a most vital stage in our deve:-lopm.:nt . Steven Bithell Rlan Douglas Brent Mieszkuc Craig Kelly David Pollock

This year has been a most successful year for our U/9 's. ·Ni th budding new tal€nt, ability and willingness to train hard and to learn combining to give u:_. a team of ambitious , dedic>ated and successful footballers who would ~ake any club proud .

Gur new talent this yesr saw two of our ' iggE-st boys , Alan Douglas and Craig Kelly become househo l d names in other clubs for their Ricking ability and det~rmination to get the ball . de also saw Matthew Jiley ~ Paul Ayo'ub, Brett 1V1aning, Shannon Abbott , Brent Mieszkuc, Neill Levine and ·Adam Jones all of whom in their first year I am proud to say , always managed to !Jet the ball at some stage and effectively contribute t o the team effort . Towards the ena of the season we had a late corr.er in Rick.y Boss , who, with a full se:ason to look forward to · next ye:a r has shown ne has speed and ability with a v ery kee:n eye· -r;hat g,i ves him a lot of pro mise regards nis · futt. re in the game • . ·

Now to our o ld er boy~ who too had a great season . Steven Bi thell, Herbert Love, Damian Zar:mi t, David Pollock , Michael .Aldridge, .Andrew Louth , Jason Bzado.uch, Brett E.obin son , and Brendan Wal tou all of whom have shown that the con.iiaence gained from a second season and for some a third , has 6iven tnem the abi lity t o go for the ball with a determination tnat has resultEd in moves

. that one would have tbought beyond most U/9 1 ~ . Allour U/9 1 s .have been interchanged through most ·positions during the season an d this has dEveloped a team of confident centre field runners who have made many other coaches rBmark on the ability of our team in general.

Australian Rules Football is an extremely energy consuming sport and often a teame fitness to carry on for a full game can mean the difference betweEn two teams< Our U/9 's have

·shown in 1982 that they wer e not only fitter but they played a code of football that lef t other teams talking and paved the way t o t,I1eir being Undefea ted in all matches for the. season . ·

I would like to e~y that our season this year has been a credit to all who have been part of it and thanks to the many parents for their willing support and assistanc e through the season .

To have been able to coach a team where par·t.:nt participation has beEn nothil'.lg short Of excE·llent and the keermE:SS Of the fuys has gi ven mE the fondest memories and left me truely proud .

Last but far fro m l east I would like to thank my Manager Kaye Bi thell and Assistant Coach Paul Mo::os for their t r emendous support during th6 season in helping make the U/9 1s as strong of f the fi eld as they were on • ..

Bdnkstown Sports Aus tralian Rules (Senior) Football Club has compl ~tcd its fir s t y~ar in thE Sydney Football Leagut 1st grade comp2tition .

During the season they w0n only 4 games . One against Newtown , one against C:mpbelltown and both gamGs against Liverpool.

Results in thE sEcond r ound were much improved over thEir early games against expEriencEd clubs like North Sydney &J'Jd St . Geurgc;.

Two things stood out in the- B~nk.s town li TIE up - one was the lack of a tall ruclcman and thE other was the absence of a clase f orward .

PEnnant Hil ls play Ed in the 1982 Grand Final and agairist us tht:y l oo ked very ordinary . Bankstown had the ball in i ts f0rwar·d lin e for much more of t hE 100 minutEs than th€ opposition did. But we could not scur~ goals. The PrEsi dent of Pennant Bills gave a very t:,ood speech after that garue , saying that i n his opinion WE had won a moral victory.

Moral victor~es a r e hollow onEs and do not get the 4 points .

A ~::> od gr oup of jm1iors is being promoted next season and another good group 5o~s up i n 1984 .

The club is cJnfid~nt 0f its future, bas ed mainly on the class of its juniors , bo l ster ed by one or two playrrs to fill spc_:cial needs . 111e predict big things after 1985 .

At thE start of the season we f ound that our t eam consi sted of 10 n<.: 1·1 boys to our code , and six buys who had play~d b e f o r e , so a l o t of work had tJ bl done t o get the boys playing f oo tball and mo re ir;.portantly playing as a side .

Aftc£ many t r aining ni ghts and a bit o f e ffort, the boys soon began to c utc ho n to th(:' rules , and they start ed to play a s a side , and as .:i r eeu l t of this , the team won a few matches, which hGlp ed· to lift th8ir confidEnce an d ~ore importantly they seemGd to be enjuyin g playing their fvotba ll.

Q::' the gan:t- s w<:: played we were getting a l o t o f uur d riv~ fro~ th€ centrEs, which NE r e Bhaun Hardaker , Andrew Szafr a nski, rucks P€te r a nd Hod no y Brovks nnd John MagnEr who were our i o vers. The back lin€ consisted o f Steven Breeze, Tyson Rex, Not·l ,/ortl t-y , half backs, IVJ.ichael O' Brien , Jason King , back poc.k l ts , ..:.mil o ur twu ruckmGn were the r Es ting full back .

Ano thEr bi g fac tor for this success , was the inter est of the parent s thi s yr:ar . .?e had many parents at our tra inin g nights, but on the we~kGn d gamE ~ we would have many more turning up t o watch the boy s p lay, a nd I _am su r~ this hElped ·the boys p l a y be tt er in t he ir games .

- 1 0 -Terry Lines: Started the y~ar vEry strongly but gradually l a cked the same determination later in the year . vn ly once did we see the same Terry again and that was his l as t game . Terry being very tall will have to be considered in a more dernnnding position in 1983 • . A~drew Keys: This is Andrews first season but has shown a want for the bal l and a good understanding of the game . He plays a good centre- mans game , defending and attacking a t the right times . Andrew was the first person I have ever seen who could kick both feet at this age without any teaching what- so - ever . I am l ooking forward to seeing how he will go in 2 years with the tackling side of f ootball comi ng in . Keep up this improving Andrew to become a (FEY) playe r in next years side .

Mark Young : Mark won Bes t Team Man in 1981 a:nd went close this _ year but was just nudged out . He f ound it har d to get inter es t ed this year, unfortunate ly it was obvious both at games a nd training. Hopefully he will become more involved next year .

Robin Zimme r mann: This was Robins 1st year of football. He p l ayed many goo d game:s often again st the strongest tean.s . Ro bin cont r olled both back and forward lines wel l , but in the·long run will d~finitely be a forward line player because of his want to attack .

Peter Orton: Peter won the B0st Utility Player in 1981 . Ther e is so much to say about Pete:r but mainly he is the 'meanest bugger ' I have ever seen . No one will ever beat him without paying dearly. He played well all year in the centre position after several tal ks from mor e experi enced players . Peter has mor e than eno ugh deter -mination ana now needs to find the skills . This year he won the ~ Most Consistent Trophy .

Sco tt McDonald: He had play0d 67 games ut the b eginn ing of this s easo n . 1978 Best 'Iearri Man - 1 980 Best Utility Player .

This yEar was said1 by many to be his best year ever . Scott play·ea on the half back line ~ wher e he managed to destroy many forward line mo ves fro n: the oppositi on . He is fast , very elusive and contro ls the ball well . Now after a well performE'd 1982 he has managed t o tuck a Best and Faires t und er his belt .

Ross Janes: Ross has great skill fo r such a small f e l l ow . In 1980 f or the U/9 ' s he t oo k out the Most Improved trophy and l as t year wone Most Consistent as a first year U/11. He is a strung mark and do es have a surprisingly long kick . He will not look bef ore he kicks and often kicks wildly to the opposition .

He just recently made the Regional School Boys side and definitely wi 11 take out more r epresentative titles .

This year he started off on his 26th game. He is presently playing c entre half forward but will find hiTuself too small in later years . One t hing goi ng for him is that he is not goal hungry, but instead fEeds the full f orward . Ross this year won the Best Team Man awar d. Good l uck next year Ross .

Petor Free ~ Peter like his brothE:r and fatht.r is going to be a brilliant player . He has adopted the forward flank brilliantly . Damon Griffin : Damon li k~ bis mate Gr rard is improvin~ stro ngly . He did show tha. t he was touchy about {"etting the ball but he quickly curFd that. Br adley Fulle r : The dEsper atc Brad startEd with us in 1980. He won thE &:st Utility Play (:T in 1981 , playing 20 5amc s up to t he start of this s(asQn . Ht did start on the back flank but showed such ketnnEss fo r th~ ball and such hate f or · watchin g a man thErc was no alter~ative but t o play him on the ball a move whi ch has not failed. Brad unfo rtuna tr ly trios to run too far with the ba ll and so oft en finds himself gEt ting caught ,

Matthew Clancy~ Matthew likr many others is playing his first s Ea son this year. Matthew is sh0wing i!;-provcr.::ent in training but needs to apply this in games . ·Matthew captained the side aga inst l\lli nto and put in E-a si ly his best game= .

HE- i s showing pler.ty of dedication , which is unfortunat~ly, so often , missing with youn g play ers . Matth ew is dcfin·itely o n the upward r oad f o r seasons to come .

Paul C'..tmpbell: Ht: started playing in 1979 and had playt:-d 35 game s up tothc st8rt of the 1982 season . For the U/9 ' s j_n the 1980 season Paul took off the Moet Consist£nt Trophy. This yEal Paul has continued with b i s strong marks and long l ef t f oot kicking~ The centre half back position has found a perman ent owner , despite Pauls objections . All he needs to realise is thE so1teonE: has to do it, and he was the only one that could .

If Yaul continue-s with a bit more pushing from himsE lf he cou l d take out some r epre sentative positions .

Paul won our Blst Utility Player this y rar .

Gc:rard Cabrellc: Gerard first camE: t o us in 1981 when he playe-c his f i rst 10 e:.amEs . This season with his early rnatch.s s he showed considerabl~ improvernE.nt on l ast year . I d0n 1 t know about Arthur but I wou l d willingly renew thE partnErship.

At tne start of the sEason Arthur and I sat down and had a good look at the team .

de hall sevE-ral talle11ted footballers and a large group of unknown quali ty with sev~ral beginners who had no ek i llf at all.

The team r ecord in previous years had not bE:"en good a nd onl y 4 of th~ players had pluytd in the U/15 ?remiersbiI team of 1981 a lso the side was vtry small over al l .

At a tEam rr.eeting before t he season got underway WE set our goal s for -clu: season. This v.ould not have been possible had we not had two coaches on the job. One oj us took the team through gr oup ~xErcises whilst the oth c: r gave personal co acni ng.

The early gart.es wErE virtual walk ovC;rS and we began to Se~ the t tht t Ear: Nas going to cev€1 op into a good con·bination and that our initial aicu of making the four was going to be too easy a nark . After our first round win against Campbell town - our only dEcE:nt opposition, WE had to aiu· at the Premiership as a realistic t~am goal .

Nick Dimou is a s<::cond yt:.ar U/15 who has not quite realised his potent ial . He does· so me very good things but rarely puts together a whole game of good football . I expect him to deve:lop n ext season. He proved he ca.n play well i n the finals when he tried hard.

Robert FiddlEr i s smal l , cheeky , persistent and polisht: d . His favourite occupation is conning umpires in to gi ving him free kicks . He is deadly around ~oals .

Mark Fisher is one of ny favourite kids , he is a big occasion player who has played for :nc- bcforE - this is our third season togethe r . 1982 has b•en his best year - he has got over the fumbles and got bettEr as the year pr ogr essed . Fernando Ge la is a very so lid and fit young man -a s tate champion swimmer . HE is v~ry ~ Ell liked . A f~arl ess footballer with an i lliproving, but still suspect kick - next season we will work hard at perfecting his kick.

Vasco Jo tevski h?,s i •ripr o ved gn:atly over the season . His best game" was in the final again st Inglc:burn where he did thing that would not have been possible 5 months ago . He should continue to develop . . -

It was svident from the start of the season that the attitude and skills of each player were to p lay a major part in the fina l s .
