From The Greenskeeper Office

Now that rainy season is over, the daily messages to keep you updated on golf course conditions and rain, will stop

for the next months. I enjoyed all the way to serve as your local weather man and I look forward for next year.

We are getting into a routine about topdress and verticut on greens, so little by little, expect your balls rolling better on

the greens. This was a critical month regarding the irrigation system pumps. We are reaching our goal to have two pumps

running and have one back up if any failure should happen. This feature, along with the new VFD (Variable Frequency Drive),

will allow us to have a more efficient irrigation and water usage on the golf course.

I am glad to inform to you that we are starting a research protocol along with the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara,

which will help us to identify pathogens in the soil of our greens. The investigation will focus on a new organic product that

claims to control soil pathogens and enhace overall plant health. We just sent soil samples to University’s lab and I expect to

start on field trials once we get our new spraying equipment next year.

Finally, I’ll share with you some final thoughts about the influence of topographic features in your play on greens. Enjoy…

THE INFLUENCE OF LOCAL TOPOGRAPHIC FEATURES ON BREAK

Comment: “The players need to keep in mind this weekend that the natural tendency of the ball is to break toward the

ocean.”

On any green, the ball will break where water flows — i.e., downhill. Greens that were built more than 50 years ago without

large earthmoving construction equipment will tend to slope with the general lay of the land.

However, the slope on more recently built greens may not cant toward any specific topographical feature. In fact, many greens are pitched away from streams, lakes, or wetlands to avoid runoff and to protect the environmental integrity of golf course ecosystems. The bottom line is that on most courses, there is no “general” tendency for the ball to break toward a valley, stream, lake, or ocean. The ball will break downhill where water drains from the green, which may be several locations on a green depending on the design.

CONCLUSION

During your next round of golf, remember that when playing in the afternoon the greens likely will be slower than they were

in the morning. The grain, if any, will have minimal impact on ball roll, but if it does, the grain will accentuate the roll in the

downhill direction. In addition, be skeptical of the notion that the greens will have a tendency to break “away from the

mountains” or “toward the Salton Sea.” The ball will simply roll down slope, which more than likely is exactly how the

architect designed and built the greens.

No Couples in November Take note, if you want to golf in Couples Golf, you need to sign up before 12:00 pm of that day, as it makes setting up the teams very difficult if you show up at the last minute. Thank you.

KIDS AND THEIR FUTURE

All good news from KIDS AND THEIR FUTURE…forty-three students are thriving academically with help from the Country Club members. Luis Antonio Aceves is in his final semester at the University of Guadalajara and is interning at the airport where he helps with international travelers. Eduardo Navarro has completed his chef training and is employed.

At the Student Aid Summit held at the Lake Chapala Society on Nov. 11th, the KIDS AND THEIR FUTURE program was singled out as unique in “caring for its own.”

Three of our young students have achieved very high marks and have an average of 10, the highest possible, or very close to it. Those students are Arely P. Rodriguez Navarro, daughter of Jose Rodriguez, an office administrator; Yahir Ramirez Rodriguez, grandson of Larry Ramirez; and, Jennifer Gonzalez Arrayga, daughter of Beto Gonzalez.

We are proud to feature Jennifer in this month’s issue. She is 14, in her third year of secundaria attending school in Chapala. She had a perfect report card of all 10’s, earning the highest evaluation possible in ALL of her subjects. However, Jennifer’s first love is mathematics, and she hopes to put her talents in math to use as she pursues a career in medicine. Jennifer has competed favorably in mathematics’ competition in Guadalajara.

Jennifer lives in San Nicolas with her parents and her brother Brian, also an outstanding enrollee in the KIDS AND THEIR FUTURE PROGRAM.

================================================================

Todas buenas noticias de KIDS AND THEIR FUTURE.
