About this Handbook

This is a practical guide on how to use the e-learning resources

available in WAES to deliver and support learning. It is intended

to help teachers of any subject who are seeking to use our

various IT resources in their teaching – that is computers,

interactive whiteboards, online resources, video cameras, and

mp3 recorders.

This handbook will provide you with advice and instructions

and will also help you to use the e-resources in a variety of

ways to aid learning.

E-Learning in WAES

Everyone uses the internet

and new technologies on a

daily basis for finding

information,

communicating, and

looking for entertainment,

goods and

services. Learners are

conveying new

expectations of the power of technology into education.

The interest and innovation is leading us to explore new

approaches to learning supported by technology. It is the

enthusiasm and curiosity of learners, teachers and the sector

in general that drives our e-learning strategy.

Our goal is to help the sector use technology as effectively as

possible, so that it becomes a 'normal' or embedded part of

our activities. We want to put our managers, teachers and

learners, at the heart of our strategy.

What is E Zone?

WAES Moodle website or E Zone, as we call it, provides

learners access to learning materials inside or outside the

classroom.

Moodle is a free and open source e-learning software

platform, also known as a course management system (CMS)

or virtual learning environment (VLE).

What can you do?

With E Zone, educators are able to create online courses with

opportunities for rich interaction. Teachers can keep in touch

via message systems, create online assignments, upload

Word documents, presentations, audio or video files,

generate slideshows, produce quizzes with different types of

questions such as multiple choice or short answer, set up polls,

organise glossaries, link useful websites, generate chat rooms,

forums, wikis and workshops, make available a student’s

journal and many more.

Trust us; everything is easy to set up.

Getting started

Uploading resources

E Zone enables you to upload many different file types of up

to 100mb in size. This is ideal for loading up course material,

handouts, and extra documentation and practice. First you

find your file/document and upload it from your machine to

the E-zone server where it will be safe, then you organise them

and put them in a folder or name it and place it in the week

you wish to display it in.

It’s a good idea to have uploaded all your files to the files

folder in your course on the right hand side before you start

placing them in the weeks that you intend them to be

displayed. Doing this first is much quicker than loading them

one at a time. So here is how to load a single file.

Linking Web Sites

This is a quick way for your students to get to information on

the web without having to search through lots of websites,

one click and students are on the page you want them to go

to. This saves valuable class time and you can track where

your students go and what extra practice they are doing.

This opens a separate window to surf the web so you can find the address of the website you want to link to, copy it and paste it in the location box.

Lastly don’t forget to save your page. When you click this it will display your new page.

This is where you type the address of the website you want your students to go to.

You can type a description so

you can remember what the page or file is about.

Name the web page or file.

Click here to browse for the file you want to upload and display for your students to download.

Below is the page displayed when you first click on “link to file

or website”.

What is E-blahblah?

E-blahblah is an E-learning blog that has the purpose of

sharing good practice.

www.e-blahblah.com

Page 30: Teacher E-Learning Handbook

29

What is E-blahblah?

The blog is composed by weekly posts with news, events,

guides, tips, useful links or web 2.0 tools and other resources.

Most important are also the sections with training videos on

software such as Notebook for the interactive whiteboard, as

well as Moodle.

There is also a dedicated page to our teaching methods and

technology embedding. Here we can watch videos of

teachers using technology in the classroom and students

giving their opinions about the use of it.

Teachers and students can also watch the videocasts

focused on phonics for learners and E learning for tutors.

These videocasts are produced in house by an ESOL course

team leader (Nuria Inglada) who is a great enthusiast about

integrating technology in her teaching, and also by the E

Guide (Sandra Pires) motivated by the outcomes of using

technology for learning and teaching, and inspiring the more

technophobe tutors.

The Wonders of Smart BoardWhat is a Smart Board?

SMARTBoard is an interactive whiteboard developed by SMART

Technologies. We have a Smart Board in all our rooms.

The SMART Board is an interactive whiteboard that turns your

computer and data projector into a powerful tool for teaching

and presenting. With the computer image projected on the

Board, you simply use your finger and press on the large touch

sensitive surface to control the computer.

The Smart Board helps energising presentations and motivates

learners.

Page 32: Teacher E-Learning Handbook

31

What can you do with your

Smart Board?

Electronic whiteboards allow users to interact and touch the

board to control any computer application, create and write

notes, draw diagrams and illustrate ideas. One can focus by

highlighting key information with electronic ink and also

capture images, notes or updates and save, print or e-mail

notes. Using an interactive whiteboard helps you to simplify

and work naturally at the Board with familiar, easy-to-use

tools.

There are thousands of images, game boards, interactive files

as for example an interactive dice, and tasks you can

customise, such as matching exercises, questionnaires,

crosswords, timelines, flashcards and so on.

Smart Notebook Weekly E-Tips

The weekly E-Tip is a small leaflet that is handed to all tutors

on a weekly basis.

This leaflet contains a tip on how to create an interactive

activity with the interactive whiteboard’s software. These tips

take one minute to read and are straightforward, even for

more technophobe teachers.

If you can not get hold of a weekly E Tip,

you can download it from our blog

What is a Flip camera?

A Flip camera is a sleek and small camcorder, simple to use

(as easy as taking a picture), big in quality and effortless to

save and share the videos.

The Flip cameras have changed the way

we in WAES use video by making it simple to

capture and fun to share.

How can you use the Flip camera

in your classroom?

1. Use video taken with your Flip to provide explicit guidance

in identifying similarities and differences. Or to ask students to

independently identify similarities and differences

2. Ask students to compare video images

3. Ask students to create and/or represent

metaphors/analogies using video

4. Capture and then edit video that highlight the critical

elements of a lesson or topic, i.e. classroom reporter

Page 43: Teacher E-Learning Handbook

42

How can you use the Flip

camera in your classroom?

5. Provide or allow students to use video as a study guide

for tests

6. Create slide shows, class books, focus walls, or websites

including images/video from a Flip

7. Use images/video taken with your Flip to enhance or

add meaning to homework assignments, or to help illustrate

the purpose of homework

8. Use images/video to support “corrective” feedback

9. Use images/video to support systems analysis, problem

46

Training

Every term we plan workshops that happen 3 times a week.

Each workshop covers a different topic, such as E Zone, Smart

Board, PowerPoint, EBS, Video editing, online resources and

more.

The workshops are intended to raise the awareness of ILT and

E-learning to all members of staff, encourage the development

of new skills to enhance the learner experience, train teachers

on how to use the available technology in the college, create

effective, engaging and meaningful activities/materials.

Teachers can contact the E Guide to book an individual session

at a more convenient time.

Welcome to our E-Learning Workshops

Projects

Podcasts – TeacherBites and

SoundBites

There are lots of

teachers in WAES

that believe on

taking the most out

of technology in

the classroom as

it makes our classes

more interesting

and effective. With

this principle in mind,

we decided to

create a series of

video casts to give people an

idea of the potential of technology in learning and teaching.

Learners can use the video casts as an extra practice outside

the classroom, and teachers can use them to see in terms of

technology what can be done inside the classroom to maximise

teaching and learning.

Page 49: Teacher E-Learning Handbook

48

Projects

Podcasts – TeacherBites and

SoundBites

The podcasts for the students deal with the pronunciation and

spelling topics for adults.

The pods for teachers show the best way of boosting

performance and achievement by grasping effective

interactive technology. These pods show educators using

classroom technology and also the making off of the

interactive activities.

The podcasts are live on E Zone

E Zone > Courses > E Learning Resources, the college’s

blog, MoleTV, Vimeo, YouTube and iTunes.

There are also other tutors in areas such as Yoga, pottery and

music making their own podcasts, either audio or video.

If you want to start creating your own podcasts and need a

hand, please contact your E Guide.

Projects

E-ILP

The e-ilp is an entirely online system that allows teachers and

learners to personalise and reflect on the teaching/learning

process. Through a user-friendly web page, teachers are able

to keep track of learners’ progress and achievement against

set targets, initial assessments outcomes, as well as course

plans, including objectives, aims, resources and lessons. All our

lesson plans, schemes of work, course outlines and students’

feedback will be online.

There is also a message centre and a live chat available and

an option to upload course materials.

The e-ilp is linked to our MIS database (EBS) and will supply the

Information on learners’

profile and attendance,

course details and tutor

login. The WAES e-ilp

project started in April 2009.

The pilot will take place in

January 2010. Look for

updates on our Sharepoint

site.

E-Portfolio

An e-portfolio is a collection of electronic evidence assembled

and managed by students and teachers. The e-portfolio may

include inputted text, electronic files, images, multimedia, blog

entries, and hyperlinks. E-portfolios are both demonstrations of

the learner's abilities and platforms for self-expression, and, if

they are online, they can be maintained dynamically over

time.

An e-portfolio can be seen as a type of learning record that

provides actual evidence of achievement. Learning records

are closely related to the individual learning plan.

Currently we are only using it with the ITQ NVQ courses (via

learning assistant). A complete e-portfolio solution integrated

with our e-ilp system will be offered to the whole service later

this year. We will keep you updated.
