WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE DESALINATION?

Sustainable Desalination uses a group of technologies to maximize economic and environmental efficiencies within the entire process. Renewable energy supply is an obvious important part, but not the only contribution to Sustainable Desalination

3

• Solar & Wind energy supply

• Energy recovery devices

• Maximized water recovery

• High-performance membrane

• Zero discharge

• Subsurface intakes

• Materials design

• Smart Systems

• Automation

FRESH WATER AVAILABILITY WORLDWIDE

4

Data and image source: SWCC

• There is an abundance of water, but it is not always accessible

• Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Region is one example in the world where this is the case

SAUDI DESALINATION MARKET

5

• Saudi Arabia is amongst the driest regions on earth

• It has one of the world’s fastest population growth rates and its population is expected to reach approximately 35 million by 2020*

• The pressure on water demand is great

• It is further complicated by the rapid increase in middle-class life styles that increase per capita water demand

SAUDI DESALINATION MARKET

6

Data and image source: SWCC

• KSA depends heavily on Desalination

• Largest Desalination Market in the World

• Makes up the biggest share in the GCC

DESALINATION ENERGY DEMAND IN SAUDI ARABIA

8

Annual Fuel Consumption for Electricity and

Seawater Desalination Industries (All Licensees)

Source: 2015 Annual Statistical Booklet For Electricity And Seawater Desalination Industries (ECRA, 2015)

• The desalination infrastructure requires a huge amount of energy (over 3,500 T BTU)

• Approximately, 10% of domestic energy consumption is used to Desalinate water*

• This figure is growing, not shrinking. Energy requirements in desalination have been steadily increasing as shown in the graph

and Solar Energy Deployment Roadmap (KACARE, 2013)

ENERGY CONSUMPTION IS UNSUSTAINABLE

9

• As you know, KSA energy grid runs on oil

• It is projected that by 2038 domestic oil demand will outstrip supply

• By 2026 domestic oil demand will outstrip the export of oil

• If KSA domestic energy consumption, including the energy needs of desalination, continues at the current trajectory, it is highly unsustainable

2038

2026

The 3 E's of Sustainability

• In Saudi Arabia, it is critical to find sustainable ways to produce and to treat water

• The country’s population growth and economic growth cannot be supported otherwise

• This critical situation is repeated throughout the Gulf and Middle East, and can be found in other regions of the world

KSA INITIATIVE FOR DESALINATION POWERED BY

RENEWABLE ENERGY

• Saudi Arabia has taken steps in the right direction.

• In 2010, the Initiative for Desalination Powered by Renewable Energy was launched under the direction of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST)

• Solar powered desalination is an attractive option: Good solar resource in the Middle East

• Main Target: Reaching a value of 1.5 SAR per m3 (0.4 USD/m3) using solar powered desalination

OPPORTUNITY FOR SUSTAINABILITY KSA Total Water Demand Versus

Planned Supply Sources (in ‘000 m3/day, 2005–2025)

14

Source: Investment Opportunities in the Desalination Sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Japanese-Saudi Business Forum (SWCC,

2012)

• In 2017-2018, KSA intends to begin installing an additional 2.6 MN m3/day and 3,000 MW at 8 different sites

• There is the opportunity that a percentage of this capacity be met at least in part by next-generation plants based on Sustainable Desalination

• Doing so would lay the foundation and secure the future of Sustainable Desalination
