CONTENTSuspension is the term given to a system of springs , dampers and linkages that connects a vehicle to its wheels.SUSPENSION

Suspension systems serve a dual purpose contributing to the vehicle's road holding / handlingandbrakingfor good active safety and driving pleasure, and keeping vehicle occupants comfortable and reasonably well isolated from road noise, bumps, and vibrations,etc.3SPRUNG AND UN-SPRUNG WEIGHTSprung weight sprung weight is the total weight of all components which are supported by the suspension system of that vehicle.

Unsprung weight - Unsprung weight is the total weight of all components which are not supported by the suspension system of that vehicle.Eg-propeller shaft.Dependent Suspension System-In this disturbance of one wheel gets transmitted to the other side also and hence both wheel are dependent on the each other. It has got solid rigid link between the two wheels of an axle.

Independent Suspension System-In this disturbance of one wheel is restricted to get transmitted on the other side and hence both wheels are independent of each other.CLASSIFICATION OF SUSPENSION SYSTEM

TYPES OF SPRINGBASIC COMPONENTS OFSUSPENSION1. Coil Spring - This is the most common type of spring made of elastic material in shape of helix . Coil springs are also known as helical spring.

2.Leaf Spring-This type of spring consists of several layers of metal (called "leaves") bound together to act as a single unit. They are used in most trucks and heavy-duty vehicles.

3.Air spring - consist of a cylindrical chamber of air positioned between the wheel and the car's body, use the compressive qualities of air to absorb wheel vibrations.

Dampers - a car spring will extend and release the energy it absorbs from a bump at an uncontrolled rate. The spring will continue to bounce at its natural frequency until all of the energy originally put into it is used up. Devices that controls unwanted spring motion through a process (known as dampening) are known as dampers.

Shock Absorber - A shock absorber is basically anoil pumpplaced between the frame of the car and the wheels.

Shock absorbers work in two cycles the compression cycleand theextension cycle.Macpherson Strut It is basically a shock absorber mounted inside a coil spring. Struts perform two jobs: They provide adampeningfunction like shock absorbers, and they provide structural supportfor the vehicle suspension.

Strut AssemblyConsists of a shock absorber, a coil spring, and an upper damper unit.Strut assembly often replaces the upper control arm.The steering gear is either connected directly to the lower shock absorber housing, or to an arm from the front or back of the spindle.When you steer, it physically twists the strut and shock absorber housing (and consequently the spring) to turn the wheel.

Anti-Sway Bars - An anti-sway bar is a metal rod that effectively joins each side of the suspension together.When the suspension at one wheel moves up and down, the anti-sway bar transfers movement to the other wheel. This creates a more level ride andreduces vehicle sway.

Air suspension:- Air Suspensionis a type of vehiclesuspensionpowered by an electric or engine driven air pump orcompressor. This compressor pumps the air into a flexiblebellows, usually made from textile-reinforced rubber. This in turn inflates the bellows, and raises the chassis from the axle.

Pneumatic Spring On SemitrailerAir SuspensionAir bag or air strut failure - due to old age, or moisture within the air system that damages them from the inside.Compressor failure - Primarily due to leaking air springs or air struts - Compressor burnout may also be caused by moisture from within the air system coming into contact with its electronic parts.

Common Air Suspension Problems:-BOSE SUSPENSIONThe Bose system uses alinear electromagnetic motor(LEM) at each wheel instead of a conventional shock-and-spring setup.Amplifiersprovide electricity to the motors in such a way that their power is regenerated with each compression of the system.

An LEM can extend and compress at a much greater speed, virtually eliminating all vibrations in the passenger cabin. The wheel's motion can be so finely controlled that the body of the car remains level regardless of what's happening at the wheel. The LEM can also counteract the body motion of the car while accelerating, braking and cornering, giving the driver a greater sense of control.Earlier dependent suspension system was used, but now independent suspension system has been introduced.Air suspension is lighter but in the past has performed less well and was more expensive. Over the years price has fallen and performance has improved.
