LET MY HEART BE GOOD SOIL God's word is like the rain that waters the earth and brings forth vegetation. It is also like the sower who scatters seed indiscriminately. Our lives are like seeds sown in the earth. Even from what appears to be little, dormant, or dead, God promises a harvest. At the Lord's table we are fed with the bread of life, that we may bear fruit in the world.

The READING OF THE MISSION STATEMENT

Let us join together and say our Mission Statement. Come and see, Follow me, The gift of God, Jesus Christ, Has set us free. The BRIEF ORDER FOR CONFESION & FORGIVENESS The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of Holy Baptism as the presiding minister begins.

In the Name of the Father, and of the +Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

In the presence of God, who sees our hearts and our minds, let us confess our sin.

The assembly kneels or sits. Silence is kept for reflection and self-examination.

God our strength, we confess that we are captive to the power of sin that dwells within us. We put ourselves first and others last.

THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST 3

What we think will make us happy leaves us longing for more. Even when we want to do what is good, we find ourselves doing the opposite. Rescue us from death's grip on our lives, and raise us up day by day, that we may be alive to God in Christ Jesus. Amen. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God; therefore we are justified by God's grace as a gift. Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, in whom we have forgiveness of sin, life, and salvation. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins. In the Name of the Father, and of the +Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

WORD God’s Word is proclaimed in Scripture reading and preaching The FIRST READING Isaiah 55:10-13 God's word to Israel's exiles is as sure and effective as never-failing precipitation. Their return to the Holy Land in a new exodus is cheered on by singing mountains and by trees that clap their hands.


10For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, 11so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. 12For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. 13Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress; instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle; and it shall be to the LORD for a memorial,

for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off. The reading concludes: Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God. The SECOND READING Romans 8:1-11 There is no condemnation for those who live in Christ. God sent Christ to accomplish what the law was unable to do: condemn sin and free us from its slavery. The Spirit now empowers proper actions and values in our lives and gives us the promise of resurrected life

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law — indeed it cannot, 8and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal


bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you. The reading concludes: Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

The GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

The HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23

In Matthew's gospel, both Jesus and his disciples "sow the seed" of God's word by proclaiming the good news that "the kingdom of heaven is near." Now, in a memorable parable, Jesus explains why this good news produces different results in those who hear.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy +1 Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord.

That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. 2Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. 3And he told them many things in parables, saying: "Listen! A sower went out to sow. 4And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. 5Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. 6But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. 7Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. 8Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9Let anyone with ears listen!" 18Hear then the parable of the sower. 19When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. 20As for what was

sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. 22As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing. 23But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty."

The assembly is seated. The SERMON “The Seven Marks of the Church: The Holy Cross” Excerpts from On the Councils and the Church (Part III) by Martin Luther (Luther’s Works, Vol. 41, p. 164-165)

Seventh, the holy Christian people are externally recognized by the holy possession of the sacred cross. They must endure every misfortune and persecution, all kinds of trials and evil from the devil, the world, and the flesh (as the Lord’s Prayer indicates) by inward sadness, timidity, fear, outward poverty, contempt, illness, and weakness, in order to become like their head, Christ. These are the true seven principal parts of the great holy possession whereby the Holy Spirit effects in us a daily sanctification and vivification in Christ, according to the first table of Moses. By this we obey it, albeit never as perfectly as Christ. But we constantly strive to attain the goal, under his redemption or remission of sin, until we too shall one day become perfectly holy and no longer stand in need of forgiveness. Everything is directed toward that goal. I would even call these seven parts the seven sacraments, but since that term has been misused by the papists and is used in a different sense in Scripture, I shall let them stand as the seven principal parts of Christian sanctification or the seven holy possessions of the church.

With the whole people of God, let us confess our faith. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.


I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The assembly may remain standing or kneel.

The PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people according to their needs.

After each petition. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer.

The prayers conclude

Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

The DISTRIBUTION OF THE HOLY SACRAMENT Access to the Lord’s Table is by invitation of the Lord himself. All baptized believers who trust that Christ is presented in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist are invited to come forward and receive Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Communion is distributed by coming up the center aisle at the direction of the usher and returning along the side aisle. Those who do not wish to receive the Sacrament may come forward with their arms crossed and receive a blessing. Those who, for any reason, cannot receive the wine may receive the Sacrament under the form of bread alone. In doing so, a communicant still receives the whole Christ. MUSIC DURING DISTRIBUTION


After all have returned to their places, the assembly stands. The POST-COMMUNION BLESSING

The Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. Amen.

The POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Let us pray…We give you thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us through the healing power of this gift of life; and we pray that in your mercy you would strengthen us, through this gift, in faith toward you and in fervent love toward one another; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK Thursday, July 17, 2014 Bartolomé de Las Casas, missionary to the Indies, died 1566 A native of Spain, Las Casas first came to the Western hemisphere while serving in the military. Granted a large estate with indigenous slaves, he freed them after he was ordained a priest. He worked in the Caribbean and Central America to improve the lives of the native peoples.

MEMORIAL PRAYER CANDLES

Your Worship Team has secured the purchase of prayer candles to be used in prayer. It’s located behind the worship leaders chairs at the front of the worship space. The purpose of such a prayer station is to symbolize the importance of prayers behind each lights.

Are you praying for a loved one? Are you praying for a friend? Are you praying for the community? Each candle represents a prayer that is in your heart and on your mind. Our Lord said his Father’s house is to be a house of prayer and to forget the buying, selling, and distractions from the prayers of the

faithful (Mark 11). Prayer candles aren’t to elicit any response from a saint, but to remind ourselves and the community of faith of God’s presence in prayer, who listens and hears, and who answers and acts.

We’re fortunate to have our facilities open most of the time for the purpose of prayer. It’s not just Sunday, but any day one can come to the house of God to pray and depart to serve. It’s true we can pray anywhere. But the house of the Lord is like a refuge and sanctuary where we connect with God’s nearer presence.

The practice of prayer candles is not limited to a single faith community. Orthodox, Anglican, Catholic, Lutheran, and even some Methodists engage in prayer with candles. Many new Millennial Christians (those born after 1980) engage in the spiritual practice of prayer with lights.

As you depart today, take a moment to examine your Memorial Prayer area.
